Tell Halif, Field IV, Stratum VIB, Locus G8005.P. This Incense stand was found on floor G8005
in a pillared house of Stratum VIB at Tell Halif.
Locus G8005.P consists of artifacts found in situ on cobbled surface G8005. This floor was constructed of small cobbles set into a matrix of dark ashy, silty soil, found below debris G8012 (N) and debris G8001 (S) and above debris G8005.1. Floor G8005 runs to the south face of wall F8005, to the east face of wall G8002, the west face of wall G8006. The southern portion of floor G8005 was interrupted either by pitting or by erosion. Floor G8005 was covered with ashy destruction debris and with several whole and restoreable ceramic vessels, including ceramic incense stand G849D2. In addition, two carved and polished limestone blocks, one to the north and one to the south of the incense stand, were found on the floor, along with the head of a pillar figurine.

Four rectangular "windows" were cut into the upper register of the stand, of different sizes and
irregularly spaced around the perimeter. Seven circular holes were also cut through
the wall of the stand, two in the upper register, five in the lower. These also were
irregularly spaced about the perimeter of the stand. Scars on the inner wall of the
stand give indication that this stand once had a base or bowl inside (now missing);
presumably incense was burned in this base or bowl and permitted to escape via the
windows and circular holes. Both the upper and the lower rims are worn. |
