Item 70872
Figure on Plinth

JPEG Image of Figurine No. 70872
Fragment of plinth figurine preserving proper left foot on the top surface of a plinth. The foot is not articulated, so it is unclear whether it was wearing footgear. Just to the proper right of the ankle, there are faint traces of a shallow drapery fold as well as slight traces of red paint. No other traces of drapery are visible. The foot faces forward on the plinth. The left corner of the plinth curves slightly and likely the front of the plinth would have curved outward. The front face of the plinth is unarticulated except for the slight remains of red pigment. On the left side of the fragment, it is clear where the seam of the mold for the figurine and the plinth ends and additional clay was added by hand to form the side of the figurine and plinth; the juncture is quite sloppy. On the inside of the plinth, additional clay has been added to offer strength. The interior of the figurine and plinth is hollow. Color: 5YR reddish yellow 6/6 (Munsell code)

Height: 4.70 cm
Width: 3.94 cm
Depth: 1.31 cm

Stratum: III
Locus: J7006
Basket: IV.J7.159

Intermixed mudbrick detritus and gray clay, packed very hard and difficult to dig. Pockets of ash also apparent, and contains large amounts of gray clay and some randomly dispersed cobbles (10-20 cm and 10-15 %) in its matrix, particularly in the southeast area of the locus. The layer appears to be sloping down toward the north. The amount of clay lessens as one moves both to the west and the north. About 25-30 cm down through this locus, the clay lessens and more red mudbrick detritus is apparent. Located 4.0 m. from the South balk and 2.0 m. from the West balk at top level 481.31 m. below J7005.1 to bottom level 480.90 m. above J7008, J7009. Several large Persian figurines found well preserved in this area. A particularly large cluster of several (ca. 10) large fragments was found just above an Iron II floor (J7008) and next to the west balk ca. 75 cm from the south balk. These figurines and others from J7006 are by far the most complete examples found to date in Field IV.
