Area N10 Summary

Excavation of Area N10, located immediately south of Area 10, was under the direction of Beth Brown, Area Supervisor, in the 1983 season, and Keith Eades, Assistant Field Supervisor in the 1999 season, and under the direction of Harold Forshey and Paul Jacobs as Field Supervisors.

Elements of Strata I, III, IX, and X, were excavated in Area N10. Excavation concentrated on Stratum VIII with its "platform," Stratum IX with its rebuilding after the destruction of the earlier "residency" house, and Stratum X, the primary phase of the "residency" type Late Bronze Age II house.

Stratum I

The most recent phase in Area NI0, Stratum I, consists of slope-wash debris and material thrown up from the digging of the modern army slit trench, NI0001. In addition, two pits had been dug into the Stratum VIII platform, cutting through a wall, surfaces and fills as deep as the foundation of Stratum VIII. Pit N10052 was a robber trench which removed the eastern portion of Wall N10042; the robber trench can still be seen in Photo N10052. Pit N10046 along the South balk cut thorugh Stratum VIII floors N10003, N10043, and N10045.

Stratum III

Loci in Area NI0 have ben assigned to Stratum III on the basis of pottery readings assigned in the field. The architectural remains and stratified material are slight in themselves and have suffered from erosion.

Post Stratum III

Pit. NI0006, in the southwest corner of the area cut through debris NI0007 and earlier ash NI0009. The absence of pottery from this pit and the lack of connections with a surface make it impossible to assign the pit to a stratum securely. However, it is assigned to Str. III on the basis of its being later than debris NI0007 through which it cuts.

Stratum III
Wall NI0002, pit NI0010 and debris NI0007 have also been assigned to Str. III on the basis of field reading of pottery, in this case a single Byzantine period sherd found in debris NI0007 beneath wall NI0002. The assignment to Str. III is insecure.

Wall NI0002 is an isolated segment of a larger wall which had been largely dismantled already in antiquity. Any surface which might have been associated with wall NI0002 has been lost to erosion. Pit NI00I0 is associated with wall NI0002 simply on the basis of proximity and relative height.

Stratum VIII

In Area NI0 the first consistent and substantial architectural phase found in excavation was the so-called "platform" Stratum VIII. In Area NI0 the "platform" consisted in a contiguous deposition of a clay-loess-and-midden mixture to a depth of nearly 1.75 m. Although clear phases in the construction of this depth of deposit were partially discernible, the actual separation of "layers" of the platform material proved impossible to determine, so contiguous was the makeup of the platform and apparently so "clean" were its use surfaces kept.

The findings in Area NI0 paralleled those in areas to the north in the depth of the deposit of the platform and in the repeated raisings of the depth of the platform by additional deposits of the clay-loess platform materrial. As in the other areas to the north in Area NI0 also the platform appears to have been associated with lined and unlined pits dug into the platform.

Unlike the discoveries concerning the "platform" in other areas, the findings in Area NI0 were comparatively undisturbed. The final use phase of the platform was found represented even by pottery in situ.

Post Stratum VIII

The abandonment--and perhaps destruction--of part of the platform was seen in Area NI0 in a thick layer of ash Nl0009 across the western part of the area. However, the evidence is not sufficient to suggest whether the ash deposit represents destruction of the platform complex or whether the ash was deposited subsequent to the abandonment of the platform complex.

Stratum VIIIA

The final use phase of the Stratum VIII "platform" consisted of a "resurfacing" over earlier architectural features of Stratum VIIIB and the cutting of a pit into the newly applied clay-loess deposit. Surface NI0003 was found covered with smashed pottery about pit NI0005. This surface and pit represent the latest in a series of architectural changes made to the platform complex both in Area NI0 and other areas. The unique feature for Area NI0 is the fact that the final phase was essentially undisturbed by the later pits and trenches which so thoroughly cut through the final phases in other areas. Hence, Area NI0 provided secure evidence for the final use of the platform complex. (Note that the field reading of NI0003.P pottery suggests an Iron I terminal date.)

Surface NI0003 was used as the staging area for a pit NI0005 cut into the platform from this level. Part of the evidence from pit NI0005 suggests that the pit may have been originally lined with stones--compare the series of lined pits in Areas 11, All, 10 and AIO. The pottery belonging to NI0003.P appeared to be "centered" on pit NI0005. Hence, whatever activity occurred in the immediate vicinity of Area NI0 involved the use of pit NI0005, probably for temporary containment of a material which was removed to the pottery vessels nearby.

Stratum VIIIA, consisting in Area N10 of a weather-worn surface N10003 and pit N1005, was part of an "industrial" complex that covered Areas 11, A11, N10, 10, A10, B10, 9, A9, and B9.

Stratum VIIIB

An earlier phase of the platform was found beneath the deposit of NI0003.1 and a portion of platform makeup material NI0008 itself. Here walls N1OO11 and N1OOI7 formed a corner, presumably of a room now almost completely destroyed by later pitting, into which tabun N10014 was set. In addition, short segment of wall N10040 (which had been truncated by pit N10046) was part of Stratum VIIIB. The floor N10015--again only packed platform NI0008 material--used with the walls was found only to the north where ash from the tabun and scattered pottery marked its existence. Again, clear and stratified evidence of the time of use of this earlier phase has been provided by remains in Area NI0.

In addition, the area immediately south of wall N100ll had already been assigned to the functions associated with pits/silos cut into platform NI0008. Pit NI0013--earlier than pit NI0005--was found at a level equal to that of wall N10011. Pit NI0013 did not show signs of a stone lining (like neighboring silos); however, at the time of the thickening of platform NI0008 in Str. VIIIA, pit N10013 had been filled with debris and sealed by another layer of clay-loess mixture of the platform N10008. Pit NIOOl3 probably originally functioned in the same way as pit NI0005 of Stratum VIIIA.

Stratum VIIIC

A still earlier phase of the platform N1000B was detected in the discovery of pit NI0018 in the northeast corner of the area, beneath the corner of wall NI0011. Pit/silo NI0018 appears to have been at least partially lined with stones and later filled with debris prior to the succeeding deposit of platform clay-loess mixture and the deepening of platform N10008. Again, the deposit of platform NI0008 was so contiguous that clear distinctions between Stratum VIIIC platform levels and Stratum VIIIB deposits could not be detected. No other evidence concerning the function of pit N10018 was found.

Stratum VIIIC was also detected in the southern half of Area N10, though disturbed by Stratum I pits N10046 and N10052, consisting of wall N10042 and three successive living floors, each covered by ash from materils burned in place. Wall N10042 and floor N10043 make up Stratum VIIIC1; at this final sub-phase wall N10042 was little more than a low divider wall. Wall N10042 with floors N10045 and N10047 constitute Stratum VIIIC2 and VIIIC3. North of wall N10042 only one phase of construction was detected in lined pit N10018.

Pre Stratum VIII

Platform NI0008 as found in Area NIO had been constructed identically to those parts in excavation areas to the north. Heavy deposits of cobble-sized stones and soil N10019 were set into the depression between stone wall foundations which remained following the destruction of Stratum IX. The platform base NI0019 thus established a firm and level region for the first deposits of the clay-loess mixture of platform N10008.

Stratum IX

Stratum VIII was constructed on top of the remains of destroyed Stratum IX architecture. Stratum IX in Area N10 consisted of a single phase--as contrasted to two phases in Areas 10 and 11 to the north--of construction and use. The use of Area N10 in Stratum 9 was apparently limited and consisted in rebuilding of walls from Stratum X.

Re-built walls NI0022 and NI0023, with newly built wall NI0024, formed part of a room whose northern limit was probably marked by a re-building of wall 10027. Earth floor NI0026 ran to these walls and provided evidence of domestic activity in the area. However, surface NI0026 was a very thin, perhaps outdoor, surface; little deposition accumulated on the surface and its compaction indicated infrequent use. A shallow stone-filled pit NI0027 completes the reporting of architectural elements of Stratum IX in Area NI0.

A probe through the earliest Stratum VIIIC floor N10047 in the southeastern corner of Area N10 detected a floor covered with ash. This floor N10051 has been tentatively assigned to Stratum IX.

The remains of Stratum IX in Area NI0 require some explanation. Overall the architectural remains and resulting deposition from use were unimpressive and suggest only minimal use of the area. This impression of the type of occupation of Area NI0--probably assignment as outdoor area for occassional use--agrees with observations made about Areas 10, AI0, 11 and All in Stratum IX. None of these areas show the depth and complexity of stratigraphy of Area BI0 where numerous phases and sub-phases were assigned to Stratum IX.

Construction fill NI0031, used to level an area for building wall NI0024, was assigned to Pre Stratum IX.

Stratum X

As in Areas 9, 10 and AI0 to the north Stratum 10 was represented in Area NI0 by a fiery destruction of the "residency" house as well as by earlier phases of use of that house.

Post X

Destruction debris NI0025 and NI0028, along with rockfall NI0029, represent the climactic end of the well-built "residency" house in Area NI0. The destruction debris included relatively large amounts of burned bricks, charred beams and charred chaff, as well as material that may have once served as roof thatching. The evidence of the burning of the house complements the evidence from the remainder of the house.

Stratum XA

Excavation in Area NlO revealed parts of two small rooms of the "residency" house. Wall line N10022-N10034 was divided by cross wall N10023, forming two rooms complete with a threshhold between them. The two rooms had earth floors, N10030 to the East and N10033 to the West. Both rooms yielded evidence of domestic use. Floor NI0030 was covered with burned chaff and dung, apparently deposited there by the occupants of the house to be used as a fuel in tabun N10035 in the room to the West. A large quern and a smashed bowl was also found on floor NI0030.

The two small rooms found in Area Nl0 added positive evidence to the knowledge of the architectural style of the Stratum X building. The house was in the style of "residency" houses, a large central room surrounded by smaller rooms on all sides. In fact, an opening or threshhold was found connecting the room in the western part of A rea N10with the central room. Hence, access to the outer ring of rooms was made easy from the central room.

Stratum XB

An earlier phase of the Stratum X house was found in Area N1O with the same architectural arrangement of walls, but with lower phase earth surfaces N10036 to the East and Nl0037 to the West. Remains of a tabun (or perhaps only a shallow ash-filled pit) N10039 were found in the corner formed by walls N10023-Nl0034 in this phase.

Stratum XC

A probe beneath surface NI0036 in the corner of walls N10023-N10022 discovered a still earlier earth surface N10038. In addition, cobbles found in part of the probe may indicate that surface N10038 was partially cobbled or that--similar to other rooms of this house--a low bench ran along wall N10022 In this earlier phase.

Section of dry-laid stone wall running roughly north to south with plaster on
top of the stones. Only a portion of the wall remained intact. In removing
debris N10001 an area of rock rubble with chunks of plaster was detected east of
the wall and appears to be collapse from wall N10002. The wall is two rows wide (65 cm.)
with only one course (20-30 cm.) remaining. It was 1.35 m. long. No foundation trench was
detected. Constructed on debris N10007. Located between 10 cm. and 1.95 m.from the West
balk and between 60 cm. and 2.0 m. from the South balk at top levels 4B6.70 m. (S),
	486.74 m. (N) below debris N10001 to foundation levels 486.53 m. (NW), 486.49 m. (NE)
above debris N10007. No surface loci were found in relation to this wall, probably
because of its nearness to the tell slope surface.

N10003	Str. VIIIA

Surface of "platform" belonging to the end of the Late Bronze period and found in all
of the areas in the upper tier of Field 1. The surface was made of compacted grey clay
mixed with loess and charcoal bits. Located 5.0 m. from the South balk and 4.0 m. from
	the West balk. At top levels 485.73 m. (E), 486.40 m. (W) below ash N10009, debris
	N10001 and above N10003.1.

This surface N10003 represents the final use or working surface of the platform complex,
a feature not found in much of the remainder of its exposure in Field 1. Cut by pits
	N10005, N10006.

N10003.P	Str. VIIIA

Pottery, bones, and stone objects found on surface N10003. For location and dimensions
see surface N10003 above. These materials on this surface are suggestive of the time of
its use; however, no "specialized" object or set of objects were found among the material
to suggest the function of the platform. However, the location of the .P material
around the stone-filled pit N10005 (see Photo 855) suggest that the use of the
now-smashed pottery was in association with the pit in the platform. Note should also
be taken of the preliminary readings given to the pottery, possibly indicating a use
of the platform into the beginnings of the Iron I period.

"Platform" made of thick layers of gray clay mixed with loess, midden debris, sand, mud,
cobbles, and pebbles, with lenses of black ash. (For additional description of this deep
	deposit, see the Reports for Areas 11, All, 10, A10, B10, 9, A9, and B9.)

In Area N10 located 5.0 m. from the South balk and 4.0 m. from the East balk at
top levels 485.52 m. (NE), 485.63 m. (SE) below surface N10003 to bottom levels
	484.76 m. (SE), 484.94 m. (c), 485.18 m. (NW), 484.84 m. (NE), 484.71 m. (S)
above wall N10040 and cobble foundation N10019.

The platform, as seen also in Areas 11 and 10 to the north, was repeatedly deepened
by the addition of layers of the clay/loess mixture, layers separated in part
by thin ash lenses. At least three such phases are identifiable in Area N10.

In Area N10 the platform is beneath surface N10003 and is cut by pits N10005,
	N10006, N10010, N10013, and N10046. Wall N10011 is set into the platform,
resting on the lower phase of the platform and covered by an upper phase. The
platform was built on a cobble foundation NlOOl9. Includes N10048, which has been canceled.

N10022	Str. IX-X

Dry laid stone wall running East-West across the middle of the area. Constructed of
uncut boulder and cobble-sized fieldstones, two rows wide visible (67 cm. as exposed),
	2-3 courses high (60-70 cm.) and 1.40 m. long. Located between 2.0 m. and 2.75 m. from
the South balk and 1.35 m. from the East balk where it abuts wall N10023. At top level
484,68 m. below cobble base N10019. No foundation level, since not removed.

The western end of wall N10022 was found built on bricklike material, an indication
that there was at least a partial rebuild of the wall at the beginning of Stratum 9,
following the destruction of the lower phase of wall N10022. Abuts wall N10023, and its
line is continued by wall N10024 to the west. Surfaces N10026, N10030, and N10036 run
to the north face of wall N10022. A thick plaster appears on the north face of wall
N10022 as well as on the east face of wall N10023.

N10023	Str. IX-X

Dry laid stone wall running North-south across center of the area and perpendicular to
walls N10022, N10024. Constructed of small boulder and cobble-sized fieldstones 2-3
rows wide (60-70 cm.), 6 courses high (1.20 m.) and 2.75 m. long (including the
threshhold.) Located between 2.25 m. and 4.55 m. from the South balk and between 1.25 m.
and 3.10 m. from the East balk. There is a threshhold at the northern end of wall
	N10023, where the wall line meets wall 10027. At top levels 484.93 m. (S), 485.13 m.
	(N), 484.23 m. (threshhold) below cobble base N10019, pit N10013, and destruction
debris N10025. No foundation levels, not removed.

Evidence of a rebuild of wall N10023 was found in that a portion of the upper wall
N10023 was built on soil and most of a ceramic pot. Hence the upper part of wall N10023,
the upper part of Nl0022, along with wall N10024 and surface N10023 constitute a Str. 9
