Area B9 Summary

Area B9 was excavated under the direction of Area Supervisors Brent Baum (1980 and 1983), C. Higgins (1986), and Keith Eades (1987). H. Forshey and Paul Jacobs were Field Supervisors. Portions of Strata I, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, and XIV were recovered in the excavation of Area B9.

Stratum I

Stratum I material consisted of slopewash debris and a small pit B9002 cut into the slope of the tell. The pit contained a scarab Obj. 600, which belonged to the Late Bronze Age.

Stratum VIII

Architecture and stratified material belonging to the Late Bronze IIB Stratum VIII was found only marginally in Area B9. Wall B9004, the continuation of wall B10032, and associated with the northern limit of the Stratum VIII "platform" B9008, served as a retaining wall for construction and buildup of the Stratum VIII complex or "platform."

Stratum IX

Stratum IX in Area B9 is the first major architectural phase preserved from erosion and robber trenches. This Late Bronze Ib-IIA house had five phases of occupation in Area B9.

Stratum IXA
The most recent occupation associated with Stratum IX is a badly preserved surface, possibly a "squatter's phase," since this surface B9011 was atop the collapsed debris B9007 and walls of the final rebuild of the Stratum IX house. The Area B9 Stratum IXA is probably identical to the squatter's phase surface 1040 in Areas 10 and A10.

Stratum IXB

Stratum IXB was a major rebuilding effort of the Stratum IX house. In this phase following the destruction of the Late Bronze IB building, new walls and surfaces were added to the the several that continued in use through the relatively short-lived Late Bronze IIA settlement.

An entire room appears to have been added in the northern side of Area B9 by means of the addition of wall B9005, bench/cobbles B9016, and surface B9009 against a higher level of wall B9003 (probably in a rebuild phase). The same phenomenon occurred on the southern face of wall B9003, i.e., the addition of a new outer (downslope) wall B9020 with its own threshhold and doorway, and a new surface B9010 at a level significantly higher than those of the Stratum IXC surfaces. Finally, wall B9003 was modified by cutting a threshhold passage between the new northern and modified southern rooms in Area B9. During this phase entrance to the house was available through the thershhold in wall B9020; a right turn through the threshhold in wall B9003 then gave access to the northern room.

An interesting note is that at the collapse of this rebuild phase a dog was trapped and killed just at the threshold entrance of wall B9003 inside the northern room. Pottery trapped and smashed on the floors B9009 and B90l0--along with several stone tools and some small objects--indicate that the structure was not simply abandoned but went through some (perhaps localized) dramatic change.

During this rebuild phase the older walls B9003, B9022, and A9010 continued to be used; in addition, the original outer (downslope) wall was reduced, probably because of its collapse, now to function as a step down the slope from the house.

This phase of the house in Area B9 is equivalent to the rebuild phase in Area 10 associated with surface l0041.

Stratum X

Stratum X in Area B9 had three phases of use and construction.
Stratum XA

Prior to its destruction by fire the architecture of the Stratum X building in Area B9 consisted of walls B9003, B9022, B902l, and A90l0 forming a room, with B9014 serving as its final surface. Outer (downslope) wall B902l probably had its own threshold; however, curiously the entrance to this room in Area B9 through a threshold between the south wall A9010 and the west wall B9022 had been closed by the addition of tabun A9007 across the doorway. During this sub-phase, then, the room in Area B9 was apparently unoccupied; in fact, the presence of a thick layer of tabun ash and broben portions of ceramic vessels B9015 suggests that the room functioned only as a receptacle for ash and garbage from the food processing in Area A9 around tabun A9007.

Undoubtedly the Area B9 room had been in use somewhat earlier, before the installation of tabun.A9007 across the entrance. And with this must be associated surface B90l8 found beneath fill and destruction debris north of wall B9003. Thus, only a hint at other architectural elements north of wall B9003 belonging to this sub-phase have been located.

Stratum XB

Stratum XB surface B90l4 covered an earlier surface, complete with some cobbling, B9017, which was also used with the four walls B9003, B9022, B902l, and A90l0. This surface, too, was marked by smashed pottery and a number of small objects. There is not enough here to suggest destruction, however, simply a re-surfacing with.B90l4, probably at the same time as the addition of the new surface A9005 in Area A9. If so, then surface B9017 represents the same living level as does surface A9012. In this phase passage between the Areas A9 and B9 rooms was open and in use.

Stratum XC

The earliest phase of the Stratum X architectural unit in Area B9 is represented most clearly by surface B9019 which was in use with walls B9021, B9022 and A9010, but was found to be beneath the founding levels of wall B9003 Thus, a still earlier alignment of the architectural features is apparent, though the northern limits/wall have not been located, because it is beyond the excavation area.

This phase may be associated with an earlier surface A9019 in connection with an earlier alignment of wall A90l7 in Area A9. In any case, the earlier arrangement in Area B9 makes clear that wall B9003 appeared in use for the first time with surface B9017. Hence, Stratum XC is itself a rebuilding or remodeling phase.

Stratum XI

Stratum XI, the earliest Late Bronze Age occupation on Tell Halif, was represented by a series of walls and surfaces which made use of pre-existing architecture of the Early Bronze age Stratum XII. Essentially, Stratum XI occupation in Area B9 was found to have been reuse and re-building of architecture from the previous Stratum XII settlement. Stratum XI in Area B9 probably represents a domestic unit, though whether it was an inside or outside area has not been determined. Two phases were determined in the architectural remains of Stratum XI in Area B9.

Stratum XIA

Stratum XIA, the final phase, involved a room made of walls B9025, B9030 in its rebuild phase, B9070 in its rebuild phase, and B9037. An ashy surface B9029 connected the walls of this room. (In Stratum XI, walls B903, and B9070, which had both been founded in Stratum XII, were rebuilt by means of upper course.

Stratum XIA differed from Stratum XIB in the addition of wall B9025 as the apparent southern limit to the room in Area B9.

Stratum XIB

Stratum XIB also consisted of a room made up of walls B9030 in its rebuild phase, B9070 in its rebuild phase and wall B9037. In Stratum XIB, however, the southern limit to this room in Area B9 was Wall A9081 in its rebuild phase. Surfaces B9029 and B9041 were used with these walls.

Stratum 11 began, then, by making use of pre-existing Early Bronze age architecture.

Stratum XII

Stratum XII in Area B9 had two phases.

Stratum XIIA

The final phase of Stratum XII consisted of a room whose borders were set by brick wall B9059, stone walls B9036, B9030 and A9081. In addition wall B9070, though cut off from access by the addition of wall B9059 still served an architectural function in Stratum XIIA with the northern portion of wall B9079. Surface B9063 connected walls B9059, B8036 and B9030 in a common use phase.

In Stratum XIIA wall B9030 was added against the western face of the preexisting brick wall B9079. Apparently there was a need to strengthen the eastern side of the room in Area B9, a need brought about by the step-terracing of the side of the tell up from Area B8.

Stratum XIIB

Stratum XIIB consisted of essentially the same room identified in Stratum XIIA, without wall B9030. Here walls B9079, B9059, B9036, and A9081, connected by surface B9068 formed a room at the edge of a terraced building area. In Stratum XII walls B9036 and B9059 had been added to alter the arrangement of architecture established at the end of Stratum XIII. Hence, Stratum XIII wall B9079, located on the edge of the tell slope, made a convenient beginning point for construction of Stratum XII. Likewise the wall line B9062 established in Stratum XIII was rebuilt, though on a slightly different alignment, as wall B9036.

Stratum XII represents domestic architecture, as objects found on the floors indicate. In addition, Stratum XII in Area B9, like Stratum XII architecture in other areas in Field I, relied heavily on the building lines established already in Strata XIII and XIV. Walls of Stratum XII are frequently found constructed directly or nearly directly on wall lines of Stratum XIII.

Wall B9070 which had been constructed in Stratum XIII continued in use in Stratum XII. However, the Stratum XI pitting (evidenced in the disturbance in the northern end of Wall B9062) and backfill in the area between Wall B9070 and Wall B9059 obscures the function in Stratum XII. The area between Wall B9070 and Wall B9059 is too narrow to have been used as a living space. The area was probably used to step up slope, with wall B9070 serving as a terrace wall for a building north of Area B9. The remains on surfaces B9063 and B9068, the interior surfaces of the room formed by walls B9059, B9030-B9079, B9036 and A9081 suggest domestic use. Wall B9030 on the East was constructed next to the inside (West) face of Stratum XIII wall B9079. Thus, the room formed by these walls was set down inside the upper remains of the Stratum XIII room in the area, a "box in a box" type construction.

Stratum XIII

Stratum XIII in Area B9 had three major phases and a single sub-phase associated with a room and a street.

Stratum XIIIA

Stratum XIIIA, the final phase of Stratum XIII, consisted of a room made up of walls B9070, B9062, B9067 and brick wall B9079. Surface B9069 covered the interior of this room, while surface B9074 was found in association with the southern face of wall B9067 and the western face of wall B9079. The room in Area B9 was, as indicated by the material found on the floors, probably domestic. However, a domestic industry, specifically flint-knapping, was evidenced by completed lithic tools and workshop tools for knapping on surface B9074.

Street B9075, found marginally in Area B9, served foot traffic to the west and outside of the room in Area B9.

In addition the remaining ends of walls B9085 and B9114, along with the small sections of surfaces B9081 and B9084, all east of wall B9079, have been assigned to Stratum XIIIA on the basis of their connection to wall B9079. So little of these architectural elements have survived erosion on the steep slope east of wall B9079 that identification of relationships was partially prohibited.

Stratum XIIIB

Stratum XIIIB consisted of essentially the same architectural elements, walls B9079, B9070, B9062 and B9067, with surface B9083 connecting them in this phase. (No additional surface south of wall B9067 was found below surface B9074.) This, too, was most probably a domestic unit, but again with a home industry of flint knapping represented by the find of a lithic core for striking Canaanean style blades beside wall B9079 and on surface B9083. There were also found faience beads of a necklace on surface B9083.

Wall B9079 was constructed along the crest of the tell slope during Stratum XIIIB. It was laid directly onto an earlier Stratum XIIIC surface B9091.

It has been assumed here that street B9075 was constructed and used during this phase of Stratum XIII.

Stratum XIIIC

Stratum XIIIC had a minor sub-phase associated with its use in Area B9.

Stratum XIIIC1

Stratum XIIIC1 consisted of a domestic unit made up of walls B9070, B9062 and B9067. Surface B9091, with a localized re-surfacing B9098, connecting these walls in common use phase. Since surface B9091 ran beneath wall B9079, it is assumed that there was once a now missing wall along the eastern side of the Area B9 room.

Surface B9091, like its two successor floors, also showed signs of home industry in the form of lithic manufacture. Two flint cores and several blades were found on surface B9091 directly beneath wall B9079.

In Stratum XIIICl cobbled street B9097 served foot. traffic west of wall B9062.

Stratum XIIIC2

The earliest phase of Stratum XIII saw the construction of Wall B9070 along the North balk of the Area, wall B9062 along the West balk and wall B9067 along the South balk. Again, it is assumed that there was a wall east of the excavation area which originally served as the eastern limits of the Area B9 room. In this earliest of phases, surface B9091 connected these walls in a common use phase. Street B9097, constructed during this phase of Stratum XIII, also served as carrier of foot traffic west of wall B9062.

Comparable to patterns of construction seen in other areas in Field I, Stratum XIII builders made use of wall lines established in Stratum XIV. Thus wall B9070 was constructed directly atop Stratum XIV wall B9112, wall B9062 atop wall B9111 and wall B9067 partially atop wall B9116.

Stratum XIV

Excavation in Area B9 discovered a single phase of occupation belonging to Stratum XIV.

Stratum XIV in Area B9 is a domestic setting on the edge of the tell slope, set on a raised terrace above the lower unit in Area B8. It consists of a room limited by stone walls B9112, B9111 and B9116/B9118. Surface B9110 connected these walls in a common use phase, along with two benches or stone installations B9121 and B9120 set against walls B9111 and B9112. A small red-burnished juglet was foud on surface B9110. In addition, on the western face of wall B9111 a narrow bench B9123 (perhaps an earlier phase wall beneath wall B9111) was associated with earth surface B9106.

Wall B9118 appears to have been the original wall at the southern limit of the Area B9 room, and was later buttressed by the addition of wall B9116 across its northern face. (Hence, it is possible to speak of a sub-phase within the Stratum XIV finds.) An eastern wall to the room in Area B9 can be assumed--now eroded--since wall B9118 is seen through the B9/B8 balk.

Pit cut into eastern slope of the tell. Located between 3 cm. and 91 cm. from the South balk and between 93
cm. and 1.8 m. from the East balk at top level 484.60 m. below B9009 to bottom level 484.19 m. above debris
	B9007.

The pit was filled with gray-brown silt (probably wind-blown loess), stones, bone, and shell. A scarab
(Obj. 600) was also found in the pit.

Stone wall line west-east across the center of the area. Constructed of boulder and cobble-sized, uncut
field stones, which were probably laid with a mortar (especially seen in the lower courses). The wall is
	two rows wide (75 cm.), 5 courses high (1.20 m.), a preserved length of 3.65 m. Located between 2.05 m. and
2.80 m. from the North balk (at West balk line), between 90 cm. and 1.65 m. from the North balk (along the
	East balk line), and 3.45 m. from the West balk. At top levels 483.84 m. (E), 484.80 m., 484.34 m. (W),
	below B9001 to founding level 483.48 m. and 483.67 m. above fill B9034.

The upper part of this wall is probably a rebuild (from approximately the level of 484.11 m.) when walls
B9005, B9036 were also added. At least at this upper level a new threshold was added in the wail at the
West balk to provide a passage between a southern room represented by surface B9010 and a northern room
	represented by surface B9009.

In its upper phase, then, wall B9003 was abutted by wall B9005 from the north, and surfaces B9009 and B9010
ran to this wall from the north and south respectively. On the downslope side of wall B9003 still another
wall B9021 (though badly eroded) abutted wall B9003 from the south in the upper use phase.

In earlier phases, surfaces B9017, B9015 and B9014 ran to the wall from the south and surface B9018 from the
north. Wall B9020 was abutted by wall B9003 from the west in this lower phase.

This wall is also above surface B9019, indicating that it is probably itself a later addition to the Str. 10
building. On its downslope end the wall is badly eroded. Pit B9033 was cut along the north face of the wall,
severing the connection between wall B9003 and surface B9018. Fill B9032 extends to the North face of wall
	B9003.

Wall at the West balk, the continuation of wall B10032 in Area B10. Constructed of cobble and boulder-sized
field stones, dry-laid. The wall is 3 to 4 rows wide in Area B9, 5 courses high. It is 98 cm. long into Area
B9, 1.18 m. wide, and 95 cm. high. Located 98 cm. from the West balk and between 95 cm. and 2.30 m. from the
	South balk at top levels 486.60 m. (W), 485.13 m. (E) below B9001 to founding levels 484.65 m. (W), 484.59 m.
	(E) above B9003.

The wall is built partially on lower wall B9003. No surfaces were found in Area B9 relating to this wall,
but two likely surface lines were seen in the trimming of the West balk (probably the same as Area B10
	surfaces B10035 and B10040.)

The relationship of this wall to platform B9008 is an important one. It appears that wall B9004 was cut into
the platform by means of a foundation trench.

Stone wa11 that abutts wall B9003 from the North. Constructed with cobble and boulder-sized field
stones. It is 2 rows wide (85 cm.), 2-3 courses high (64 cm.) and is preserved to a length of 2.25 m. (into
the North balk). Located between 30 cm. and 1.2 m. from the West balk (at North balk line), between 1.07 m.
and 1.80 m. from the West balk (where it abuts wall B9003 at 1.80 m. from the North balk) and between 2.20 m.
	and 4.50 m. from the South balk (into North balk). At top levels 484.70 m. (N), 484.89 m. (S), below B9001
	to founding level 484.38 m. (S) above fill B9032.

This wall abuts wall B9003 from the North. Bench B9016 was built against the west face of wall B9005.
Surface B9009 runs also to its western face. Now includes B9031 which has been canceled.

B9014	Str. XA

Surface of compacted earth, covered by ash from tabun A9007, by chaff, and by discarded pottery. Located
between 2.25 m. and 5.0 m. from the North balk and 3.9 m. from the West balk at top levels 483.53 m. (E),
	483.71 m. 484.05 m. (W) below B9015 and B9013 and above B9014.1.

This surface is likely a buildup surface above surface B9017, but it is the level for the use of tabun
A9007 in Area A9, as shown by tabun ash B9015 thrown onto surface B9014. As a result of the placing of
tabun A9007 in the threshhold between walls A9010 and A9011/B9022, the room as represented by surface B9014
must have gone out of use; ash and garbage was then thrown over the top of the tabun onto surface B9014.
This surface was present, then, during the tabun A9007 phase, as well as during the previous phase of tabun
	A9013.

Surface B9014 ran to walls B9003, B9022, A9010, and B9021, above the stone threshold between walls B9022 and
A9019, and with the cobbles of surface B9017.

See Sections West, South; Plan 192; Photo 657.

B9014.P	Str. XA

Pottery and objects thrown and smashed on surface B9014. For dimensions and location see B9014 above. The
material in this locus was probably all discarded broken pottery thrown into the room in Area B9 after the
entrance from Area A9 had been blocked by tabun A9007.

Tabun ash from tabun A9007 on surface B9014 and in the threshold between walls B9022 and A9010. Consists of
a fine, lightly compacted ash with lenses of dark gray, white, and black. Contains also bone, shell, lithic,
and pottery. Located between approximately 2.75 m. and 5.0 m. from the North balk and 2.7 m. from the West
	balk at top levels 483.94 m. (W) below B9013 to bottom level 483.65 m. above B9014.

The ash sloped down to the east and to the north, indicating that, after the effective closing of the
threshold between walls B9022 and A9010 by means of tabun A9007, ash and other debris were simply thrown
through the doorway into the now unused room in Area B9.

B9020	Str. IXB

Poorly preserved wall line along eastern side of Area. Constructed of boulder and cobble-sized fieldstones,
dry laid. The wa1l was already partly exposed when the area was first opened; hence, subject to erosion and
collapse. The wall is preserved 1-4 rows wide, a maximum width of 1.0 m., 2-3 courses high (55cm.-70 cm.),
a length of 2.52 m. Located between 3.05 m. and 4.15 m. from the West balk (at South balk line), between
	2.35 m. and 2.75 m. from the West balk (at 1.5 m. from the South balk line) and between 2.10 m. and 4.54 m.
	from the North balk at top level 484.30 m. (S), 484.35 m. (N) below B9O01 to founding level 483.90 m. above
	fill B9013.

This wall was poorly preserved and it was difficult to determine its line. Abutted wall B9003 from the south
and wall A9010 from the north. There appeared also to be a threshold with a stone door socket through
wall B9020 next to wall B9003. The threshold seemed also to lead to a step down upon the older wall line
B9021. This wall represents the final rebuild phase of the LB building.

See Plan 193; Section South, East; Photo 610

B9021	Str. XABC

Stone wall along and in the East balk, constructed of large cobble and some boulder-sized stones. Three
courses (approximately 65 cm. high) remain and it is 2 courses wide (approximately 50-75 cm.). It is
constructed of large cobble with a few boulder sized fieldstones, a few of which may be roughly dressed. It
is preserved for a length of 2.50 m.

Located between 3.20 m. (northern end) and 4.30 m. (southern end) from the West balk and between 62 cm. and
2.90 m. from the North balk at top level 483.77 m. below B9001 in part (partially exposed at begining of
season already) to founding level 483.40 m. above fill B9034.

Wall B9021 was re-used in the final rebuild stage as a step to move downslope through the threshold in wall
B9020. In the earliest phases of the room it was the outer, downslope wall; it may have had its own
threshold as well (See Section E) which was later covered by upper phase construction. Abutted by both
walls B9003 and A9010 from the west. Surfaces B9014, B9017, and B9019 run to its western face.

Stone wall along the West balk of the Area. This is the continuation of wall A9011. As seen in Area B9 it
is two rows wide (at southern extent) with a rubble core, 3-4 courses high. Seen to be 75 cm. wide, c. 75 cm.
	high and 2.50 m. long (including B9/A9 balk). At top level 484.52 (S), 484.29 m., 484.48 m., 484.03 m. (N)
	below B9008, B9007, andB9010.1.

Wall B9022/A9011 was built in 2 sections, at two slightly different times. The earlier part B9022 was 3.25 m.
long, extending into Area A9; there it cornered with wall A10018. Then the remainder of wall A9011 was
abutted against B9022, but on a slight inset. In addition wall A10018 abutts B9022 from the west. The full
length is 6.0 m. Surfaces B9010, B9014, B9017, and B9019 run to its eastern face.

B9030	Str. XIAB-XIIA

Wall constructed of boulder-sized fieldstones, two rows wide (50 to 60 cm.) and four
courses high (preserved height varies from 90 cm. to 1.56 m.). Located 5.5 m. from the
North balk and between 3.75 m. and 5.25 m. from the West balk (at 2.0 m. from the
South balk) and between 3.20 m. and 3.80 m. from the West balk (at the Suth balk line).
	At top levels 483.18 m. (N), 483.03 m. (c), 483.33 m. (S) below fill B9023 and debris
	B9001to founding levels 482.82 m. (n), 482.41 m. (c), and 482.27 m. (S) above debris
	B9078, debris B9089, and wall B9079.

The wall was 4 to 5 courses (90 cm.-1.65 m.) high, two rows wide and approximately
3.75 m. in length. Surface B9029 and debris B9029.1 run to the top course and
surface B9063 runs up to its bottom course on the West face. At its southern end it
is bonded into wall A9081. On its north end it abuts wall B9059. Wall B9030 appears
to be built over the top of wall B9067.

The primary phase of wall B9030 abuts wall B9059 on the north, and it is bonded into
wall A9081 on the south. A top course (a later addition) extended north across the
top of wall B9059 to abut wall B9070 and overlay a small part of wall B9079.

The uppermost courses of B9030 are abutted by wall B9036. See also the description
for Wall A9085 (the southern extension of this wall wall through the B9/A9 balk
	into area A9).

	(E) above mudbrick wall B9059. Wall B9037 is abuted by wall B9025 on the West and B9041 runs
	to its North face.

Wall B9037 as an upper rebuild on mudbrick wall B9059 (together with Wall B9025 as an upper
rebuild phase partially utilizing wall B9036) illustrates clearly the reuse and modification
of existing EB structures by the Stratum XI settlement.

Fill for construction of surface B9041, consisting of ashy debris with inclusions of pebbles and small
cobbles concentrated to some extent in alignments running North to South. Located 1.70 m. from the West balk
and 4.0 m. from the North balk (and extending through balk intersection A9/B9/A10/B10 into Area A10). At top
	levels 483.35 m. (N) 483.41 m. (C) and 483.35 m. (S) below fill B9023 and pit B9028 to bottom levels 482.27
	m. (N), 482.30 m. (C) and 482.29 m. (S) above street B9075. This fill is contained by wall B9036 on the East
and, in the northernmost part of the area, it extends into the robbed out area at the intersection of walls
B9059, B9036 and B9070. The absence of a clearly defined pit within this debris coupled with the indication
that part of wall B9070 and wall B9036 had been robbed out where they intersected (see Photo 1158) indicates
a sequence of extensive clearance and subsequent backfilling along the west side of wall B9036. The presence
of modest amounts of MBIIC/LBI pottery in this fill identifies this as the work of Stratum 11 settlers. The
filling was probably to provide a level area for the creation of surface B9041. Similar clearing and backfilling
was also observed in the area between wall B9059 and wall B9070.

	Now includes B9055, B9072. (Note: Baskets 174, 175, 177, 183, 184, 187, 191, 203, and 208 may contain
materials from the westernmost part of the fill now designated B9050, which is North of wall B9037/B9059.)

Mudbrick wall. Located between 1.30 m. and 1.85 m. from the North balk (at its eastern end) and
between 1.20 m. and 1.75 m. from the North balk (at its western end) and between 1.65 m. and 4.4 m.
	from the West balk. At top levels 482.76 m. (E), 482.84 m. (C) and 482.96 m. (W) below wall B9037 to
	founding levels 481.98 m. (E), 482.08 m. (C) and 482.14 m. (W) above surface B9091.

The wall was 7 courses high (ca. 76 cm. to 82 cm.) and the top course was 2 rows wide (ca. 50 cm.). The
lower courses were constructed of one row of bricks laid side by side lengthways (N-S) so that the width
of the wall is the same as the length of the individual bricks. The top course was constructed as a cap
course with the bricks laid end to end (E-W) two rows wide. At both ends cobbles were found embedded within
the bricks, perhaps to strengthen the join where it abuts wall B9036 on the West and wall B9079 on the East.

Wall B9059 abuts walls B9036 and B9062 on the West and wall B9079 on the East. Wall B9030 abuts the south
face of wall B9059. Surface B9091 runs beneath wall B9059. Surfaces B9069 and B9091-B9098 were apparently
cut through in an attempt to provide a level area on which to construct wall B9059. Debris fill B9065 runs
to the North face of wall B9059.

Although no foundation trench was identified during excavation, preparation for construction of wall B9059
apparently included the excavation of a shallow foundation trench to provide a level building site (the earlier
surfaces of Stratum 13 sloped sharply to the East). The deep pitting on the North side of wall B9059 in Stratum
11 obscures the stratigraphic relationships of wall B9059 on the North side. No other surfaces were found
associated with wall B9059 on its northern face. Surfaces B9063 and B9068 run to the southern face of wall B9059.

South. Runs to the North face of wall B9116, to the East face of wall B9111, to the East face of bench B9121,
to the South face of bench B9120 and to the East face of the portion of wall B9112 which extends south of
the preserved remains of bench B9120. Surface B9110 also appears to run to the north face of that part of
wall B9118 which extends beyond the western end of wall B9116. Surface B9110 becomes patchy in this area,
	however.

B9111	Str. XIVA

Wall constructed of fieldstones laid with mud mortar. Located 4.0 m. from the North balk and between 1.03 m.
and 1.52 m. from the West balk (at the North balk line) and between 45 cm. and 94 cm. from the West balk (at
	50 cm. from the South balk line). At top levels 482.15 m. (N), 481.84 m. (C) and 481.97 m. (S) below debris
	B9109. Not excavated below.

As currently exposed the wall is 2 rows wide (approximately 50 cm.) and 2 courses high (approximately 40 cm.).
Since the wall is at least 2 courses high and is separated from wall B9062 by the leveling fill of B9109 it
is more likely that this is an earlier wall than that it is only a sockle for B9062, even though both walls
follow the same line. The southern end is poorly preserved.

Wall or bench B9123 appears to have been built along its West face and bench B9120 along its East face. The
relationship of bench B9123 and wall B9111 can only be completely clarified by further excavation.

Wall/installation B9112 abutts its East face. Surface B9110 runs to its East face except where Bench B9121
is preserved against it. Debris B9100 lay against the West face of wall B9111.

See Sections North, South; Plan B9 Stratum XIV; Photo 1458, Final.

B9112	Str. XIVA

Wall constructed of fieldstone. Located between 1.35 m. and 2.70 m. from the West balk and between 30 cm.
	and 92 cm. from the North balk. At top levels 481.96 m. (E), 482.24 m. (C) and 482.11 m. (W) below debris
	B9107. Not excavated below.

As currently exposed wall B9112 is 2 rows wide and two courses high. Surface B9110 runs to it from the South.
It abuts wall B9111, and Bench B9120 is set against its South face.

See Photo 1458; Plan B9 Stratum XIV.

B9114	Str. XIVA

Mudbrick atop wall B9085/B8041, a badly deteriorated "L" shaped section of mudbrick on stone sockle B9085.
Located between 4.0 m. and 4.5 m. from the West balk and between 2.65 m. and 3.20 m. from the North balk.
At top level 482.82 m. below debris fill B9023 to founding level 482.50 m. (top of stone sockle) above wall
B9085. (Same as wall B8041 seen in B8 West section.)

This brick wall appears to have been 1-2 rows wide (approximately 50 cm.) and 2-3 courses high although the
state of deterioration precluded clear articulation of individual bricks. Preserved height is approximately
32 cm. Abuts Walls B9079 and B9086. Surface B9081 may have been in use with B9114.

Small semi-circular deposition of ash on surface B9110. Located between 1.15 m. and 2.5 m. from the North
balk and 78 cm. from the East balk. At top level 481.71 m. below pit B9105 to bottom level 481.53 m. above
	surface B9110.

Matrix consists of coarse gray ash with 15%-30% inclusions of pebbles to small boulders. Pit B9105 is cut
down into the top of this deposit. Pit B9092 also cut into this deposit.

Wall constructed of fieldstone in the Southeast quadrant of the area and extending into the East balk.
Located 2.0 m. from the East balk and between 47 cm. and 1.05 m. from the South balk at the East balk line
and 55 cm. from the South balk at 2.0 m. from the East balk. At top levels 481.96 m. (E), 482.05 m. (C) and
	482.09 m. (W) below debris B9074.1 and debris B9096. Not excavated below.

Three courses (approximately 45 cm.) have been exposed and the wall is 3 rows wide (approximately 50cm. to
60 cm. Surface B9110 runs to the North face of wall B9116 and wall B9118 runs along the South side of wall
B9116. Wall B9116 appears to have been built against wall B9118. A gap of 80 cm. between the western end of
B9116 and the southern end of wall B9111 may constitute a doorway.

There is a slight depression alongside the North face of wall B9116.

B9117 Canceled; combined with B9096

B9118	Str. XIVA

Wall constructed of fieldstone. Located between 1.0 m. and 4.0 m. from the West balk and between 3.50 m. and
	4.40 m. from the North balk. At top levels 482.25 m. (E), 482.03 m. (C) and 481.98 m. (W) below debris B9096
	and B9074.1. Not excavated below.

Wall B9118 runs alongside wall B9116 to its Western end at 2.25 m. from the East balk, then it turns NW to
connect with wall B9111. As currently exposed it is 3 rows wide (approximately 55 cm.). Only the top course
is visible at this stage of excavation. It appears likely that wall B9116 was constructed against wall B9118
and that wall B9118 was an earlier wall at the southern end of the architectural unit in Area B9.

Stone installation, possibly functioning as a bench or bin for walls B9112 and B9111. Located between 1.25 m.
and 2.35 m. from the West balk and between 90 cm. and 1.30 m. from the North balk. At top level 481.93 m.
below debris B9104. Two courses are currently exposed (approximately 15 cm.) and it is from 2-3 rows wide
(approximately 40 cm.). It is constructed against wall B9112 and wall B9111. Surface B9110 runs to the South
	face.

See Photo 1458, Final. Plan B9 Stratum XIV.

B9121	Str. XIVA

A stone installation possibly serving as a bench for wall B9111. Located between 1.63 m. and 2.60 m. from
	the North balk and between 1.15 m. and 1.60 m. from the West balk. At top levels 481.80 m. (N), 481.73 m.
	(S) below debris B9104. Not excavated below.

It was partially dismantled before it was recognized as an installation. As currently exposed it is 2 rows
wide. Surface B9110 runs to it from the East, and it is set against wall B9111. B9121 and Bench B9120 may
be part of the same construction.

See Photo 1458, Final. Plan B9 Stratum XIV.

B9122 Canceled; combined with B9085.

B9123	Str. XIVA

Bench/installation, a line of fieldstones either built against the West face of wall B9111 or protruding
from beneath wall B9111 to the West. Located 2.83 m. from the North balk and between 60 cm. and 95 mc. from
the West balk (at the North balk line) and between 35 cm. and 62 cm. from the West balk (at 1.25 m. from the
	South balk). At top levels 481.96 m. (N), 481.84 m. (C) and 481.79 m. (S) below debris B9100. As currently
exposed B9123 is 2 rows wide and 2 courses high. There is a slight slope down from North to South. Surface
B9106 runs to it from the West. It appears to abut B9111; however, it is possible that wall B9123 is a lower
	wall which runs beneath B9111.

B9123 as currently exposed has been interpreted as a bench for wall B9111. Alternatively, B9123 could be a
buttressing construction against wall B9111. Further excavation is necessary to clarify the relationship of
	wall/bench B9123 to wall B9111.
