Area B8 Summary

Area B8 was excavated under the direction of S. Herbordt (1977), C. Simmons and R. Egan (1983) as Area Supervisors. P. Jacobs and H. Forshey were Field Supervisors. During excavation parts of five strata were recovered.

Stratum I

Eroded slopewash material, debris B8001, covered the entire area. Earlier layers of brick debris B8003, B8004, and B8006 also are part of the unstratified debris washed down the slope of the tell.

Stratum XII

Just beyond the limits of the excavations in Area B8--seen in section in the West balk--were a series of architectural elements not found in the area itself. The relative position of these architectural features--built directly onto lower strata loci, demonstrated that they belong to the Early Bronze Strata XII and XIII. Additional proof is the physical linkage of one of the surfaces (B8046) with the surface A8012.

Surface B8046, therefore, and associated features seen in the West balk of Area B8, belongs with the Stratum XII loci excavated already in Area A8. Similarly, loci between surface B8046 and known Stratum XIV loci belong to Stratum XIII.

Architectural units identified with Str. XII seen in the West balk but not extending into the excavation area are wall B8041 (a brick and stone wall) and surface B8045 to the north and surface B8046 to the south of wall B8041. Surface B8046 connects physically with excavated surface A8012 in Area A8, making the identification of these elements with Str. XII certain. Hence, Wall B8041 was probably the northern wall to the Str. XII room found in Area A8 and continued into Area B8, where it has eroded away.

Stratum XIII

The West section of Area B8 also gives clear indication of earlier phases of occupation in connection with wall B8041. Seen in section north of wall B8041 are two surfaces B8042 and B8044. These surfaces belong to Stratum XIII. A deep pit (seen in Area A8 as pit A8015) disturbs the surface(s) south of wall B8041. In Area A8 Stratum XII is separated from Stratum XIII by this same pit A8015 filled with ash.

The architecture of Stratum XIII in Area B8 are wall B8041 and two surfaces B8042 and B8044, both north of wall B8041. Wall B8041 was originally built directly on top of Stratum XIV wall B8027, the lower room of Stratum XIV having been filled with midden, a process repeated in Area A8 in the re-use of walls, terracings and fills in Stratum XIII. Part of a surface may appear south of wall B8041 at a level equivalent to that of surface B8042; however, post-XIII pitting has obscured the presence of another surface.

Stratum XIIIA

Stratum XIIIA consists of wall B8041 and earth surface B8044, seen in section only.

Stratum XIIIB

Stratum XIIIB consists of wall B8041 and brick paved surface B8042, seen in section only.

Stratum XIV

Stratum XIV was a major architectural stratum excavated in Area B8. Its history is identical to that of Stratum XIV in Area A8. Stratum XIV was founded on and in the ash from the destruction of Stratum XV. Three occupation phases are associated with the architecture, followed by a phase in which the lower room in Area B8 was abandoned and midden allowed to accumulate in it. A destruction of Stratum XIV is indicated also in Area B8 in which toppled bricks from walls were found on the final floor and on the midden deposit.

Post Stratum XIV

The destruction of Stratum XIV in Area B8 was indicated by large sections of fallen brick wall found along the South balk of the area. Apparently a large segment of a wall--whether B8027 or A8023 is unclear--fell and landed in a more or less upright position onto midden B8022. The destruction involved fire, as shown by the ash on surface B8033 and the collapsed walls of Area B8.

Stratum XIVA

Well before the destruction of Stratum XIV by fire a portion of the building(s) in Areas A8 and B8 had been abandoned, to be used for the accumulation of household debris and garbage. Because of severe erosion of part of Stratum XIV in Area B8 two deposits of midden material--B8013 and B8022--have been identified, whereas they likely were originally part of a single midden across the area.

During the abandonment of the Stratum XIV eastern room occupation continued in the western, upper room along the West balk of Area B8. Here A corner of a room, formed by walls B8012, B8027 and surface B8033, was found in use up to the destruction of the stratum by fire.

Stratum XIVB

The upper room along the West balk--walls B8027, B8012 and surface B8033--were also used contemporary with walls and surface in the lower room in Area B8. Here wall B8012 served as the western wall of the lower room, as well as the eastern wall of the upper room.

Two other walls have been identified as part of this phase of the Stratum XIV rooms in Area 88. Along the East balk wall B8005, though partly destroyed by erosion, was one of the original walls of the structure. The northern wall of this room was reused Stratum XV wall B8039 and its upper brickwork C8003. (The Stratum XV fortification wall was apparently still standing to a sufficient height to allow for its incorporation into the Stratum XIV construction.) A badly eroded surface B8014 was the occupation surface for this phase, and it was used with mortar B8015, which had been installed at ground level. A short wall B8028 connected installation B8015 with wall B8012 and functioned as a low divider. The lower room in the eastern part of the area must be identified with domestic occupation.

In addition, in the southwestern corner of Area B8, caused by the addition of fill debris B8024, a sharply sloping surface B8023 was found to join the living surface B8014 with the base of wall B8027.

Stratum XIVC

Earlier Phase XIVC was nearly identical to Phase XIVB. Walls B8012 and B8027 formed the earliest phases of the upper room along the west balk, with surface B8043. Walls B8012, B8005 and B8039 formed the outer walls of the lower, eastern room in the area. In this phase living surface B8019 was used with mortar B8015 in its earliest phase, along with the dividing wall B8028 and sloping surface B8023.

Stratum XIVC marks a change in the architectural arrangement of the rooms in Area B8, in that an earlier wall B80040 was replaced by wall B8027 in forming the corner of the upper room along the West balk. In replacing wall B8040, which had apparently collapsed as the result of a fire, fills B8024, B8033.1 and B8020 were added to raise the levels of the rooms in the area. Wall B8040 was at least partly leveled down to its foundations and partly buried under fill B8024. Mortar B8015 and wall B8028 were also added in Stratum XIVC.

Post Stratum XIVD

The demolition of wall B8040 and the presence of ash B8026-B8032 within the corner of walls B8012-B8040 suggest that a fire of at least localized occurrence brought about the end of Str. XIVD and the need to add new architectural elements which formed Phase XIVC. Hence, a minor (at least) destruction accounts for the differences between Stratum XIVD and Stratum XIVC.

Stratum XIVD

Stratum XIVD in Area B8 consisted of the corner of a room at the West balk, formed by walls B8012 and B8040. (No surface for this room was reached in excavation.) The room in the eastern part of the area was formed of walls B8012, B8005, B8039 and surface B8030. A domestic purpose can be assumed for this phase of Stratum XIV.

There appears to have been no separation between the room in Area A8 and the room in Area B8; in fact one surface from Area A8 was traced into Area B8. Hence it is likely that a long open area, a long room, extended from wall A8025 in Area A8 to wall B8039 in Area B8 in all phases.

The initial phase of Stratum XIV was constructed directly on and in the deep ash deposit of Stratum XIV (B8036) and by using at least one of the surviving walls B8039 of the earlier Stratum XV fortification system. It is interesting to note that all of the architecture of Stratum XIV so far identified in Field I were built up to the limits of the inner wall line of the fortification system, although the Stratum XIV settlement gives no sign of having been fortified itself. This may be the result of the fortification system having decayed only partially, while the outer wall line and glacis offered an excellent location for new construction.

A covered drain in Area B7 suggests that there had been at least one other room east of Area B8 in Stratum XIV. The drain siphoned liquids to the outer edge of the earlier Stratum XV fortification wall.

Stratum XV

Post Stratum XV

The deepest probe through the original floor of Stratum XIV immediately encountered the deep ash deposit B8036 (same as 8036) which had accumulated inside the fortification walls of Stratum XV. As reported from Areas 8, 9, A7 and A8, the ash in Area B8 also was deposited in alternating layers of ash and thin layers of decayed brick, all of it washed or blown into the cavity behind the wall. The lines in the ash decline to the northeast. Finds in ash B8036 were rich; numerous lithic blades, sherds and other small objects were found, all uniformly small. Of note were the miniature, hand-made "votive" vessels found in the ash.

Stratum XV

As ash B8036 was removed in a probe against the North balk, the stones of walls B8038 and B8039 began to appear. The corner formed by these two wall lines marks the northern limits of the Stratum XV room found north of tower 8022 in Areas 8 and 9. The corner also established part of the configuration of the Stratum XV fortification. The inner wall line (B8039) at the North balk of B8 was constructed at a right angle to the outer wall line, suggesting a deepening of the curtain wall in Area C8. In fact the width of the wall in Area C8 is ca. 6 m.; it may be that a second tower parallel to tower 8022 was built at this point in the defense line.

Fill consisting of compacted yellow-brown soil, ash, cobbles in the
southwestern corner of the area. Located ca. 1.40 m. from the West
balk and ca. 1 m. from the South balk at top level 480.85 m. below
debris B8023.1 to bottom level 480.69 m. above ash layer B8026. Ran
to and above wall stub B8040.

Function of fill B8024 was to serve as makeup for sloping surface to
	wall B8027.

Thick layer of ash in the southwest corner of the area, consisting
of dark gray-brown (smothered) ash, and small chunks of bricks and stone.
Located between 55 cm. and 85 cm. from the South balk and 1.05 m. from
the West balk at top level 480.69 m. below fill B8024 to bottom level
	480.44 m. (E), 480.52 m. (W). Not excavated below.

This ash appears to match a layer of ash north of and below wall B8027.
Probably represents a localized destruction layer which necessitated
rebuilding in Area B8. Runs to north face of wall stub B8040.

Stone wall in western part of Area. Constructed of small boulder and
cobble-sized field stones with a rubble core. The wall appears to
have been dry laid. It is 1.85 m. long in Area B8, ca. 75 cm. wide (two
rows), 55 cm. high (3 courses).

Brick superstructure B8011 survives on top of wall B8027. Wall B8027
forms a corner of a room with wall B8012, although wall B8027 was added
considerably later than B8012 and was built partially on B8012. Surface
B8023 runs to the southern face of wall B8027; surface B8033 to its
northern face. Still a second surface--seen only in section--B8043
probably ran to its northern face as well. Collapse B8008 lay against
its southern face and fill B8018 lay against its northern face.

Short dividing wall of stone between wall B8012 and installation B8015.
Constructed of small boulders, dry laid at right angle to wall B8012.
Located between 2.12 m. and 2.6 m. from the East balk to wall B8012 and
between 1.45 m. and 1.77 m. from the North balk at top level 480.20 m. below
B8013 to founding level 479.90 m. above B8020. Wall was two courses high
(30 cm.), one to two rows wide (32 cm.) and 78 cm. long. Used with
	surfaces B8014, B8019.

Probably functioned as a simple divider wall for goods.

Ash found within the confines of the room marked by walls B8012, B8040.
Probably the same as ash B8026. The ash is located up to 90 cm. from

Runs to the western face of wall B8012; therefore, it may represent a
destruction level of the Str. XIV house in Area B8. The top of the ash
slopes down to the south. The top surface of the ash appears to continue

Ash from the destruction of the Str. XV town deposited by natural forces
behind the fortification line. The ash, like that found in Areas 8, 9, A8,
was deposited in alternating layers of ash and thin deposits of brick detritus.
	Located in Area B8 1.25 m. from the North bald and between 1.08 m. and 3 m.
from the East balk at top level 479.99 m. below debris B8030.1 to bottom
level 479.02 m. (This bottom level represents only the point at which excavation
was stopped, not the bottom of the ash.) As in the other excavations of this ash,
great quantities of sherds and objects were found in the ash, all relatively
	small in size.

The ash runs against two wall lines, walls B8038 and B8039, both of which are
original parts of the Str. XV fortification system.

B8038	Str. XV

Stone wall line belonging to the Str XV fortification system. Constructed
of boulders and a few cobble-sized stones, dry laid. Only a short segment
of the wall was exposed, a portion of the inner face of the thick curtain.
Located between 3.05 m. and 4.85 from the South balk and between 51 cm. and
90 cm from the East balk (at 75 cm. from the North balk) and between 95 cm.
and 1.38 m. from the east balk (at 4.5 m. from the South balk).

Wall line B8038 forms a right angle with wall B8039, giving indication that
the fortification wall thickens at the point of the B8 North balk, a fact
confirmed by excavation in Area C8. Wall B8028 was exposed only to a depth
	of 5 courses.

               See Photo 951.

B8039	Str. XIV-XV

Stone wall line belonging to the Str. XV fortification system. Only a
short segment of this wall line was exposed. Constructed of boulder-sized
stones, dry laid. Located between 1.30 m. and 3.35 m. (as exposed) from
the East balk and between 4.60 m. and 5.05 m. from the South balk (at 1.75
	m. from the East balk) and between 4.08 m. and 4.37 m. from the South balk
1 m. from the West balk.

Wall B8039 forms a right angle with wall line B8038, thus indicating that
the fortification wall thickens at this point in Areas B8 and C8. This
thickening may indicate a second tower accompanying tower 8022 to the south.
Exposed only to a depth of 5 courses.

Wall B8039, along with surviving brick superstructure was reused in Str. XIV
in all phases as the northern wall of the rooms in Area B8. Surfaces B8019 and
B8030 were found to trace to wall line B8039. Ash B8036 runs to wall B8039
	also.

See Photo 951; Plan B8 XIVB.

B8040	Str. XIVD

Brick wall seen in West balk in south of area. The wall was constructed
of a single row of bricks (ca. 40 cm. wide) atop a row of stones which
served as the substructure. Located between 8 cm. and 52 cm. from the
South balk (at the West balk line) and ca. 1.75 m. from the West balk at top
level 481.18 m. (at the West balk line) below fill B8024. (Not excavated
	below; no founding level.)

This wall originally served as the southern wall for the room at the west
balk of Area B8 and the northern wall for the room in Area A8. Following
a collapse--probably as a result of destruction by fire--the wall was
apparently partially leveled and replaced by wall B8027 at a position slightly
to the north of the original line.

Surface B8030 runs to this wall. There is likely another surface which
runs to the north face of wall B8040, beneath ash B8032.

		See Section West; Photo 951.

B8041	Str. XIII

Stone and brick wall seen in West balk atop B8011, B8027. This wall line
was seen only in section as the West balk was being trimmed. It was
constructed of a base of boulder and cobble-sized field stones (2-3 rows
wide ca. 60 cm.; 3 courses high ca. 50 cm.) and a superstructure of bricks
(2 rows wide and 4 courses high ca. 60 cm. x 62 cm.). Located between 75 cm.
and 1.12 m. from the South balk at top level 483.10 m. below B8001 and a
founding level 481.99 m. on top of bricks B8011.

Surfaces can be seen in section running to both faces of wall B8041. A
brick surface B8042 runs to its north face. Above this obvious surface
are two other probable surfaces (now numbered B8044, B8045) also running
to its northern face. At least one surface B8046 can be detected in section
running against the southern face of wall B8041.

This wall probably functioned through both Str. XII and XIII. Probable
surface B8046 corresponds precisely with Str. XII surface A8012, making it
likely that wall B8041 was the northern wall of the room in Area A8 in
	Str. XII.

		See Section West.

B8042	Str. XIII

Surface of flat bricks seen in West balk. Constructed of bricks laid flat
up to the north face of wall B8041. Located between ca. 1.05 m. and 2.60 m.
from the North balk at top level 482.01 m. and a bottom level 481.90 m. above
fill B8018. A later surface can be detected above surface B8042.

		See Section West.

B8043	Str. XIVC

Surface seen in west balk, probably running to wall B8027. A surface
along the West balk, missed in excavating the narrow piece of the Str.
XIV room at the west balk of Area B8, was seen in section. It is covered
by a thin layer of ash and was made of compacted earth and clay. It sloped
down to the south, as did later surface B8033, and appears to run to both
	walls B8012 and B8027.

Located between 50 cm. and 2.60 m. from the North balk and probably 1 m.
	from the West balk to wall B8012 at top levels 481.27 m. (N), 481.03 m. (S)
	below surface B8033.

		See Section West.

B8044	Str. XIII

Surface seen in section running to the north face of wall B8041. This
surface is marked by a thin line of gray ash and stones and sherds on the
ash. Located between 75 cm. and 2.63 m. from the North balk at top level
	482.18 m.

		See Section West.

B8045 12

Surface seen in section seen running to the northern face of wall B8041.
Marked by a line of heavy stones (rockfall?). Located between 1.5 m.
and 2.65 m. from the North balk to wall B8041 at top level 482.55 m. below
	B8001.

		See Section West.

B8046 12

Surface seen in section running against southern face of wall B8041. This
surface was marked by a thin line of ash and meets the already excavated
surface A8012. Hence, this establishes that wall B8041 was used, in one of
its phases, as part of Str. XII architecture.

Located 75 cm. from the South balk at top level 482.61 m.

		See Section West.
