Area B10 Summary

Area B10 was excavated under the direction of Area Supervisors Johnn Wade (1980), Brent Baum (1983), Les Cornell and Rob Muldenhauer (1987). Paul Jacobs and Harold Forshey were Field Supervisors. Elements of Strata I, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII were recovered in the excavationof Area B10.

Stratum I

To Stratum I have been assigned a modern arm trench which cut across the western half of the excavation area, debris B10001 thrown out of the trench in its construction, slopewash debris B10002, and an Arab period grave B10022 which was seen in the West balk, just beyond the excavation area.

Pit B10050 represents activity prior to the army trench and the grave; it has also been assigned to Stratum I.

Stratum V

In this architectural phase, badly eroded and pitted by Phase 1 army rench and slope erosion, wall Bl0003 appears to be the outer wall of a Persian age building which was buttressed by two walls B10004 and Bl0006 running at right angles to it. A terraced surface B10005 was also held inslope by wall line B10007 and may have functioned as an ascending, stepped entrance to the building proper. Connections to the inside (upslope) portion of this architecture have been cut by Phase 1 army trench.

Stratum pre V

Preparations for the architecture of Stratum V were made by the erection of platform/terrace B10009, on which Stratum V walls were subsequently built. The stones of this flat, cobbled platform had been set in wet mortar or clay and follow exactly those of the upper architecture, leading to the conclusion that B10009 was a preparatory stage for Stratum V. Fill B100l3 had also been set down over earlier remains as B10009 was constructed.

Stratum VI

Stratum VI in Field I is represented by fragments of a domestic unit, which has been severely disturbed by the modern army trench and by pits of earlier strata. Two walls, B100ll and B100l7, at right angles to each other were constructed with niches in the stone foundations , apparently for timbers or pillars to support the roof. Wall BlOOll and the eastern (downslope) part of B10017 were constructed first and were knit into each other. Later (shortly later) the western part of wall BlOOl7 was added and made to abut wall BlOOll. Earth surfaces Bl0018 and B10024 complete the upslope (presumed inside) architecture. Down-slope (to the southeast) surface Bl0027 and a well-constructed tabun were added. A shallow pit B10015 containing tabun ash was located next to the tabun.

The construction of these walls BlOOll and B10017 included setting down a wet mortar material Bl0028 and Bl0030 into which the lower stones of the walls were pressed.

Stratum pre VI

A phase of filling and pitting B10026 and the lower portion of B10015 preceded the construction of Stratum VI.

Stratum VII

Stratum VII is a rich architectural phase in Area Bl0. There are known to date seven sub-phases to Stratum VII, all connected by the commonly used wall line B10032. This deep and rich phase is significant because of the evidence it provides for an intense and unbroken occupation at Tell Halif from the end of Late Bronze II through the Iron I periods. From the evidence of Area BlO, Stratum VII, alone, it would appear that at Tell Halif there is no disruption or change of culture--no sign of destruction nor presence of Philistine ware--at the end of the Late Bronze period. Rather, the opposite appears to be the case--an intense, indigenous occupation of the site during the time of the arrival and settlement of both Philistine and Israelite groups in adjacent regions. The pottery assemblage from these successive sub-phases range in age from the LB IIB to the early Iron I.

Stratum VIIA

In the uppermost sub-phase wall B10032 was used with cobbled surface B10023 and wall B10045. Wall Bl0045 is presumed to be part of a longer parallel wall L.B10045-Bl0047 that has been partially robbed out by earlier pit B10012. Tabun Bl0025 was set into the cobbled surface, indicating that at this stage the room was probably an open courtyard.

Pit/sump B10036 was both stone—lined and stone—filled, suggesting that it was intended to be use for drainage from surface B10023. In addition a narrow strip of surface B10023——cobbled along the West balk——was found.

Earlier pit B10026--and probably slope erosion--destroyed the downslope part of the building and broke connections of surface B10023 with wall B10047.

Stratum VIIB

Walls B10032 and B10045 are again related in this sub-phase by means of earth surface Bl0037 beneath cobbled surface B10023. From this level also pit Bl0036 was dug, whose purpose is perhaps that of a sump (based on the evidence of the rock-filled pit.)

This sub-phase is also disturbed by earlier pitting as well as by Stratum I army trench.

Stratum VIIC

Wall Bl0032 appears again in a major use sub-phase with walls B10045-B10047; surface B10035--covered with smashed pottery and numerous small objects, including a terra cotta head of a bull-shaped vase--connected these walls. This surface, too, proved to be a courtyard surface, as shown by the (badly preserved) remains of tabun B10038 and numerous stone grinding tools.

Pottery on this surface dates to the Iron I period.

Stratum VIID

Wall Bl0032 appears in a still earlier sub-phase with wall Bl0045-Bl0047. The eroded and uneven surface B10040 connects these walls in a common use phase. Pottery on this surface--including a whole, painted pyxis-dates to the LB Il/Iron I transitional period.

Stratum VIIE

With this sub-phase the architectural arrangement differs from those above. Wall Bl0032 is again in use; now, however, wall Bl0043 abutts it from the north and is itself abutted by wall B10042 from the east. Surface BlOO4l connects all three walls and surface Bl0044 runs to the north face of wall Bl0042.

Pottery on surface B1004l dates unanimously to the Late Bronze IIB period.

Although there has been an alteration in architectural alignment between Stratum VIIE and VIID there is no evidence of destruction. Rather the common architectural feature of wall B10032 continues in use.

Stratum VIIF

Walls B10032 and B10042 are again connected in another, earlier sub-phase. Surface Bl0046--dating also to the LB IIB period--connects these walls.

Stratum VIIG

A still earlier surface—-B10051--was seen against the southern face of wall B10042 This surface also connects with wall B10032 and wall B10043.

Stratum VIII

The stratigraphy of Stratum VIII in Area BlO was more intricate than found anywhere else in Field I. The stratum contains five full phases of occupation, each one apparently having realationship to the “platform” reported in the excavated areas to the south and west (Areas 9, 10, 11, A9, AlO, All). With the completion of work in Area BlO on Stratum VIII, it becomes clear that the occupation of Tell Halif during the Late Bronze IIB period was even more intense than had been suspected from earlier work.

Stratum VIII, in all five phases, consisted in Area BlO of a nearly complete room of a building which established the northern limits of platform B10059. Wall B10032, in use also in the later Stratum VII, was the southern wall, whereas walls B10043 and Bl0042 made up the western and northern walls, respectively, of the room. The eastern wall has presumably fallen to erosion down the slope of the tell.

Stratum VIIIA1

The final phase of Stratum 8 consisted of the three walls B10032, B10043 and B10042 with an earth surface BlOO4l common to all three. In addition, excavation north of wall Bl0042 found earth surface B10044 contemporary to surface B10041. Both of these surfaces gave indications of domestic—like activity in the room within Area BlO and north of wall B10042. Although none of the objects on these two surfaces were extraordinary, the pottery from surface B10044 suggests that this final phase of Stratum VIII already dates to the beginnings of the Iron I period. In the debris fill for surface B10044 a broken ceramic plaque of the “fertility” type was found. See Photos 850, 851, 880, 881.

Of particular interest to the interpretation of this Stratum VIIIA (as well as to all of Stratum VIII) is the fact that walls B10032 and B10043 were used to contain the deposition of platform 810059. The deep deposit of clay and loess was found, as expected, south of wall 810032 but also west of wall B10043. Apparently the room or rooms represented by the architecture in Area B10 had to do with the operation, perhaps overseeing of the platform itself. It also needs to be noted that, since no indication of surfaces were found south of wall B10032 to correspond to the relatively large number in Area B10, it is most probable that the platform was in use all through the five phases of Stratum VIII. (It might also be argued that the platform continued in use during part or all of the Iron 1 Stratum VII also.) Only the discovery of ash lens B10065 in the platform (similar to lenses in other areas) suggests any phasing of the platform itself in Area B10.

Stratum VIIIA2

A sub-phase number has been assigned to Stratum VIIIA2 on the basis of the fact that north of wall B10042 five successive surfaces were found in use with wall B10042 (one belongs to the final phase of Stratum IX), whereas only four successive surfaces were found in use with the southern face of wall B10042. It is here assumed that surface B10041 was contemporaneous to surface B10054 north wall B10042 at a time before surface B10054 was replaced by surface B10044 in Stratum VIIIAl.

Photo 853 shows a collection of grinding/pounding stones on surface B10054, suggesting a domestic setting.

Stratum VIIIB

The same architectural configuration present in Stratum VIIIA1-A2 also applies to Stratum VIIIB. Walls B10032, B10043. and B10042 again form a nearly complete room in Area B10 with earth surf ace B10053, which was covered by a thin layer of white ash. Surface B10057 was found north of wall B10042 and completes the known architecture for Stratum VIIIB.

Material on floor B10057, especially pottery and a large collection of grinding/pounding stones (see photo 857. 894), again suggest a domestic setting. This Stratum VIIIB was also used with platform B10059.

Stratum VIIIC

For Stratum VIIIC, again walls 810032, 810043, and 810042 form the room within Area BlO, while the central earth and plaster surface is B10055. The corresponding earth surface north of wall B10042 is B10062. Surface B10055 yielded ordinary domestic objects, including a mortar and a fish vertebra; surface B10062, however, yielded a more noteworthy set of objects, especially a collection of Mediterranean seashells in a pile. Photo 859 shows the remains on surface B10062.

Stratum VIIIC was also used with platform B10059.

Stratum VIIID

The earliest phase of Stratum VIII in Area B10 saw the construction of wall 810032 directly on top of Stratum IX wall B10060, also the construction of wall B10043 directly above Stratum IX wall B10061, but the continued use of wall B10043,, which had been added anew to Stratum IX in its final phase. Hence, a change in the architecture is clear between Stratum IXA and Stratum VIIID, although the tradition of a room of this dimension and location was preserved in the new architecture of Stratum VIIID. [This fact again supports the hypothesis of a long—standing occupation of Field I by people related to each other by family. Strata X, IX, VIII and VII are connected by means of shared architectural elements.]

In Stratum VIIID the room formed by walls B10032, B10042, and B10043 in Area 810 was completed by earth and plaster surface B10056 within the walls and by earth surface B10064 north of wall B10042. On surface B10056 were a relatively large number of artifacts and restoreable vessels. Among these were a Cypriot milk bowl, grinding stones, flint sickle blades and small chips which may be remains from retouch of the blades.

Wall B10032 was founded, as discovered in its dismantling, by means of occasionally leveling with wet clay mortar B10068 beneath some of the founding stones.

Stratum VIIID was also used with platform B10059.

Stratum IX

Stratum IX, the Late Bronze IIA stratum, is the most complex and long—lived of the strata in Field I. It was discovered, primarily in Area B10 alone, that following the destruction of the Stratum X “residency" house, the occupation of the site shifted to the north, a fact demonstrated by the high concentration of successive surfaces in Area B10 and the relatively scarce signs of occupation in excavation Areas to the south.

Stratum 9 is divided into two major parts. Stratum IXB, defined by the architecture of walls B10060, B10110, and B10099, was succeeded by Stratum IXA, defined by the architecture of walls B10060, B10061, and bench B10095. As is plain, the architectural elements of Stratum IXA differ from those of IXB and must be, accordingly, separated.

Stratum IXA

Stratum IXA in Area B10 consisted of essentially a room built in its final phase of three walls (B10060, B10061, and B10041), in earlier phases of two walls and a bench—cobbling combination (B10060, B10061, B10095—B10097).

Stratum IXA1

The final phase of Stratum IXA made a change in the makeup and shape of the room contained largely in Area B10. A new wall B10042 was added along the North balk at right angle to existing wall B10061. Thus, with wall B10060 along the South balk, three walls of a room were contained in Area B10, a situation similar to the later Stratum VIII room. It can only be presumed that the addition of wall B10042 was, in effect, a narrowing of the room used throughout the earlier phases of Stratum IXA. It is logically likely that an earlier wall line, parallel to wall B10042, is located just north of the digging area of B10. Possibly another wall--B10080--belongs to this phase; however, its location at and mainly in the West balk precludes positive identification at this time.

The room formed by these three walls B10042, B10061. and B10060 was used with earth surface B10058. In addition, north of wall B10042 earth surface B10067 was contemporary to surface B10058. Surface B10082 was found south of wall B10060 and was contemporary to surfaces B10058 and B10067. Surface B10058 yielded a small collection of lithic blades, pottery and a ceramic “lid”. The evidence for function of the room points to domestic use.

Stratum IXA2

Stratum IXA2 also represents a domestic context, one which remained in essentially the same architectural configuration through eight phases, altered only at Stratum IXA1 (see above). In Stratum IXA2 wall B10060 (in its rebuild phase; see below on IXA9 and on IXB4) and wall B10061 formed a corner in the southwest portion of the area, into which tabun B10069 was set, along with a series of boulders B10098 which served as a reflecting screen. Earth surface B10063—B10072 (separated only by the intruding foundation trench B10078 of Stratum IXA1) served as the living surface for the use of the tabun in this room, while earth surface B10083 correponded to it on the south sjde of wall B10060. The two surfaces also yielded a few domestic objects, some pottery and an extensive covering of tabun ash.

Stratum IXA3

The same configuration of architecture found in Stratum IXA2 served also in Stratum IXA3. Walls B10060 and B10061 formed a corner into which tabun B10069 and installation B10098 had been originally built. Earth and plaster surface B10076—B10075 was used with the tabun in its earlier phase. Different from Stratum IXA2, however, was the use of bench B10095 in its final phase. The artifacts on surface B10076—B10075, along with tabun B10069 and bench B10095, again point to a domestic setting.

Stratum IXA4

Stratum IXA4 also consisted of walls B1o060, B10061 and bench B10095, but without the tabun. In this phase of the BlO room earth and cobble surface B10077 was the use surface. Material on Surface B10077 included objects and debris expected in a domestic setting.

Stratum IXA5

Stratum IXA5 is identical to Stratum IXA4 in the presence of walls B10060, B10061, and bench B10095. In this instance the use surface was earth surface B10084. Objects and debris on B10084 paralleled those on B10077 above. Only in the fill for surface B10084 did any unusual discovery occur——a scarab Obj. 979 was found in the debris fill B10084.1.

Stratum IXA6

In Stratum IXA6 also the configuration of walls B10060, B10061, and bench 510095 were used with earth surface B10088. However, in Stratum IXA6 the use of cobbles B10097 was also noted in the excavation, probably simply as a surfacing treatment. (Note much the same is reported of Stratum IX remains in Area B9.) Notable among the finds on surface B10088, mainly smashed pottery, was a Syrian flask.

Stratum IXA7

The arrangement of walls B10060, B10061, and bench B10095—cobbles B10097 found in the above sub—stratum IXA6 was already in use in Stratum IXA7. In this instance the architecture enclosed earth surface B10089, also domestic in function.

Stratum IXA8

The same arrangement of walls B10060, B10061, and bench B10095—cobbles B10097 defined the earlier Stratum IXA8. In this instance earth surface B10093 was used with the stone architecture. Likewise the objects and debris associated with B10093 supports domestic use of the room in BlO during Stratum IXA8.

Brick debris B10091, found in some depth on Stratum IXA9 surface B10094, suggests either a rather deep fill in preparation for surface B10093, or more likely the collapse of one or more of the walls of the Stratum IXA9 room in area BlO prior to the construction of Stratum 9A8.

Stratum IXA9

In the earliest phase Stratum IXA9 the room in Area BlO was constructed with the architectural configuration of walls B10060, B10061, and bench B1009-cobbles B10097. The earliest floor of Stratum IXA was earth surface B10094, covered with a thick layer of white chaff. The number of objects recovered from surface B10094--among them a bronze point (Obj. 1057), stone pallets and mendable pottery--also suggests that the surface B10094 had been buried in an accidental fall of one or more of the walls of the room in Area B10, necessitating the reconstruction of Stratum IXA8.

Wall B10061 was first constructed and used in Stratum IXA9; it was built by means of foundation trench B10101 and wet clay set into the trench for leveling and securing the foundation stones atop earlier (Str IXB) wall B10113.

Stratum IXB

Stratum IXB in Area B10 consists also of a room within the area; walls B10060 (in an earlier phase of construction), B10099, and B10113 served as three walls of a room through four phases of occupation.

Stratum IXB1

In the final phase of Stratum IXB, wall B10060 (in a phase of construction earlier than that used in Stratum IXA) cornered with wall B10113 in the southwest part of the area. Wall B10099 ran in an east—west direction along the north part of the area and included a threshhold or opening through wall B10099. presumably serving as an entrance into another room north of Area B10 or to the outside. The three walls thus constituted most of a room in Area B10. (N.B. Wall B10113 may have been partially dismantled by builders of Stratum IXA9; hence, originally wall B10113 may have abutted wall B10099, forming a closed end to the room.) Earth surface B10096 served as the final use surface for Stratum IXB. Mendable pottery was found in situ on surface B10096.

[A problem to be considered is that no surfaces south of wall B10060 has yet been identified with Stratum IXB. It is possible that either surface B10083, or both surfaces B10083 and B10082 (see Strata IXA1 and IXA2 above), belongs to Stratum IXB.]

Stratum IXB2

Stratum IXB2 also has the configuration of walls B10040, B10113., and B10099. The use surface B10103 with these walls is an earth surface that has been partially plastered along wall B10099, probably as a work/food preparation area. This surface was badly preserved, broken, and patchy across the southern half. Whether the eroded condition of surface B10103 was due to extended use or from weathering permitted by abandonment of the room cannot be determined.

Stratum IXB3

Walls B10060, B10099, and B10113 were used with earth surface B10104 in a configuration identical to that of Stratum IXB2. Surface B10104 was in a condition of preservation better than that of its successor B10103 and also yielded a number of bronze objects, bronze slag, and restoreable pottery. In Stratum IXB3 also the tradition of domestic use of the room persisted.

Stratum IXB4

The earliest phase of Stratum IXB established the pattern of walls B10060 (rebuilt from an earlier, wider construction in Stratum X), B10113, and B10099. In addition, there is some evidence suggesting that the portion of wall B10099 east of the threshhold was an addition to the original wall line at the beginning of Stratum IXB4. (Surface B10110, belonging to the final phase of Stratum 10, appears to run beneath the eastern portion of wall B10099.) Earth surface B10106, covered by a layer of compacted ash, was the living surface in this earliest phase of Stratum IXB. Very little in situ remains were found on this surface, suggesting a natural progression to the successor surface B10104 in Stratum IXB3.

Stratum X

The final phase of Stratum X was reached in the uncovering of surface B10110 beneath destruction debris B10107. This surface B10110 within the room in Area B10 corresponded to the final surface B10087 beneath destruction debris B10085 and B10086 south of wall B10060 (already exposed to that level in Area AlO). The destruction debris loci B10085, B10086, and B10107 demonstrated evidence of the burning and collapse of Stratum X.

The architecture of Stratum X in Area BlO consisted of walls B10060, B10099, and B10113. However, both walls B10060 and B10099 in Stratum X were in an earlier form than that found in Stratum IXB; both had received additions at the beginning of Stratum IXB4. Stratum X wall B10060 was considerably wider than both Stratum IXB and IXA rebuilds. Stratum X wall B10099 did not include the portion of the wall east of the Stratum IXB threshhold; in fact, surface B10110 continues beneath the eastern portion of wall B10099.

Surface B10110 also included a shallow depression or sump B10111 along the north face of wall BlOO6O; the depression’s limit was even marked by a circle of stones around its edge. Function of the depression or sump or wide storage pit is unknown. A similar depression was found in the “central” room of the Stratum X house in Area 10 during the 1980 season.

On surface B10110 was found the base of an alabaster vase, Obj. 1106.

Astill earlier phase of wall B10099 was discovered in Stratum XI.

Stratum XI

Stratum XI in Area Bl0 had two minor phases; both consisted of poorly constructed or preserved floors.

Stratum XIA

The final phase of Late Bronze Age IA Str XI was probably an interior room, though only two of its walls were located in the area. Wall B10099 in its earliest phase cornered with wall B10118 near the northeast corner of the area. A small portion of the living surface was paved with cobbles B10117 along the West balk. Ash and earth surface B10119 was also used in the final phase with cobbles B10117. Into surface B10119 were set three stone installations, B10129, B10130, and B10131, whose function was probably to stabilize pottery vessels for filling or use. Pottery found smashed inside installations B10129 and B10130 support this suggested function.

Living surface B10119 was found covered with broken pottery, at least two vessels of which were painted. Surface B10119 was uneven and sloped down toward the south.

Stratum XIB

The earliest phase of Stratum XI consisted of the same architectural elements as Stratum XIA, but without cobbles B10117. Phase XIB may have induded all or some of the stone installations B10129, B10130, and B10131. The remains of Stratum XI (LB) were found directly on top of those of Stratum XII (EB).

Stratum XII

Stratum 12 appeared in its well preserved state in Area Bl0. Three phases of Stratum XII were found in Area Bl0.

Stratum XIIA

Walls B10121, B10127, B10134, and B10137 formed a rectangular room with interior surface B10135 and surface B10133 south of wall B10134 and along the South balk. (Surface B10133 was probably also an interior surface since it also runs to wall B10127 and was found covered with stone tools, saddle quern and pottery.)

The interior of this room was occupied by a large installation, probably a tabun or public oven B10136, marking the room as domestic for food preparation. The pottery and objects found on surface B10135 suggest also the domestic nature of the building.

Stratum XIIB

The same walls B10121, B10127, B10134 and B10137 were in use with installation/tabun B10136 in Stratum XIIB, along with lower phase surface B10138. Stratum XIIA represents a resurfacing (along with accumulation of tabun ash).

Stratum XIIC

The earliest phase of occupation found in Area Bl0is represented by a small (1 m. X 1 m.) patch of surface B10139 found in a probe beneath Stratum XIIB surface B10138. It is assumed here that surface B10139 was used with walls B10127 and B10137. No connection was uncovered in the small probe; but the proximity to these two walls makes it almost certain that surface B 10139 was an earlier phase surface of the Stratum XII room.

B10003	Str V

Wall built along the crest of the tell in a north-south direction. Constructed of
large cobble to boulder-sized fieldstones. The wall was 2-3 rows wide with a rubble
core; standing 1-3 courses high. The wall was 3.25 m. long (cut on its southern end
by the modern army trench). 90 cm. to 1.0 m. wide, and 50 cm. high.

Located 3.25 m. from the North balk (diagonally across the area) and between 60 cm.
and 1.6 m. from the West balk (at 1.5 m. from the South balk line) and between 20 cm.
and 1.23 m. from the West balk at the North balk line. At top levels 486.84 m. and
	486.72 m. below B10002 to founding levels 486.34 m. and 486.46 m. above B10009.

Walls B10004 and B10006 abut B10003. Surface B10005 runs to its east face, forming
a step-like approach. Wall B10007 parallels B10003 along the East balk.

Wall along the North balk, constructed of two rows of cobble to small boulder-sized fieldstones, one to
two courses high. The wall was 1.35 m. long, ca. 80 cm. wide, and 62 cm. high. Located between
2.75 m. from the East balk and between 19 cm. and 97 cm. from the North balk (at 1 m. from the East balk,
	at top levels 486.08 m. (E), 486.60 m. (W) below B10002 to founding level 485.98 m. above B10010.

Wall B10004 abuts walls B10003 and B10007. Surface B10005 runs to its southern face.

B10005	Str V

Surface between walls B10003, B10004, B10006, and B10007. This surface was uneven and broken, largely
because of its nearness to the modern tell surface. Marked by flay-lying sherds and gravel-like makeup.

Located between 1.5 m. and 2.75 m. from the South balk and between 1.0 m. and 2.7 m. from the East balk
	at top level 486.55 m. (W), 486.24 m. (E) below B10002 and above debris B10005.1. Runs to walls B10003,
B10004, B10006, and B10007. A higher level of the surface suggests a possible threshhold through wall
	B10003.

		See Plan 150; Photo 600.

B10005.1	Str V

Debris of surface B10005, consisting of a deep layer of loosely laid pebbles (40%) mixed with many sherds in
a matrix of brown-grey loess and silt with some charcoal. For dimensions and locations see B10005 above.
At top level 486.55 m. below B1005 to bottom level 486.03 m. above wall B10011. This was a fill in
preparation for surface B10005; it ran to the faces of walls B10003, B10004, B10006, and B10007.

This fill of pebbles, sherds, and silt was necessitated because of the increased height brought about by
	the construction of wall B10003.

Includes B10019, which has been canceled.

Stone wall line seen only in the West balk. Since the wall was seen only in section, having been partially
robbed out by pit L.B1OOl2, it is difficult to be certain of its original alignment.

This wall is built of large boulder-sized stones and may be three rows wide (see Section W), 90 cm. It is
also preserved to a height of 58 cm. (one ashlar on the southern side). Its length is unknown.

This wall appears to have been used with cobbled surface B10023, surfaces B10035, B10040 and probably with
surface B10037 also. It is also probable that this wall B10045 originally connected with wall B10047 at the

Wall running along the South balk, constructed of boulder-sized fieldstones with a rubble core. Located
4 m. from the East balk (and continuling into the South balk) and between 35 cm. and 1.22 m. from the South
balk (at the East balk line). At top level 484.64 m., 484.57, m. below wall B10032 and foundation material
	B10068 to founding levels 483.81 m. (W), 483.90 m. (E) above debris B10123 and wall B10127 (at the East balk).

The wall is 4 m. long, 1 m. wide (3-4 rows), 97 cm. high (5-6 courses). This wall shows signs of rebuild,
especially since the lower courses are wider than the upper ones. There is sign of possible rebuild over
an earlier doorway in wall B10060 in the East balk. Suggestions also of two rebuilds or repairs; founding
courses are wider, upper rebuild is at slightly different line and repair/rebuild of this second phase of
the wall may also have taken place. This also corresponds to the use of wall B10060 with surfaces and other
	walls in Area B10.

Wall B10060 abuts wall A9011 in the East balk and is abutted by walls B10061 and B10113. Tabun B10100 was
built against the southern face of wall B10060 in its earliest phase. Tabun B10069 was built against its
northern face in its latest phase.

Wall along the North balk, constructed of cobble and boulder-sized field stones, two rows wide and four
courses high. Located 3.60 m. from the West balk and between 35 cm. and 1.12 m. from the North balk (at
West balk line), 74 cm. from the North balk (at 1.5 m. from the West balk line), at top level 485.54 m. (W),
	484.19 m. (c), 484.36 m. (E) below debris B10093.1 to founding level 483.46 m. (W), 483.76 m. (c), 484.48 m.
	(E) above debris B10128, wall B10118, wall B10137, and wall B10121. Constructed of small boulder-sized
fieldstones, 3 rows wide in original phase (2 rows wide in second and third phases of construction), and
	4-5 courses high.

This wall line has a threshold between 1.55 m. and 2.26 m. from the West balk. Surfaces B10096, B10103,
	B10104, B10106, B10110, and B10119-B10117 run to its south face, as do debris B10096.1, B10103.1, B10104.1,
	B10106.1, B10110.1, and B10119.1-B10117.1.

Wall BlOO99 was used (through two rebuilds) in three distinctly different architectural shapes in Str. IX,
X, and XI. In Stratum X wall B10099 included a threshhold; the portion east of the threshhold--and the
threshhold itself--were an addition to the wall at the beginning of Stratum IXB. Evidence for this is in the
fact that Stratum X surface B10110 runs beneath the eastern part of wall B10099 of the Str. X phase.
