Area A9 Summary

Excavation of Area A9 was under the direction of H. Forshey (1979-80), Jack Phillips (1983), R. Mills (1986), R. Muldenhauer and L. McKinney (1987), and Paul Jacobs as Field Supervisor. Portions of Strata I, VIII, X, XI, XII, XIII, and XIV were found in the excavation area.

Stratum I

Stratum I in Area A9 consisted of non-stratified slope wash materials A9001 from the tell.

Stratum VIII

Stratum VIII in Area A9 consisted of two phases.

Stratum VIIIA

In the A9/A10 balk a deep, clay-filled pit A9003 was found to dug from the level of the Stratum VIII LB II platform. The purpose of pit L.A9003 is unknown; however, it is likely that this now filled pit may have been an abandoned storage pit or silo similar to the ones found in Areas 11, All and the A10/A11 balk. Little of the platform material of Stratum VIII (named A9002) survived in Area A9.

Pre Stratum VIII

Similar to the findings of the construction phase in Areas 11, 10, A11, and A10, beneath the clay-loess material A9002 were an ash layer A9004 and stone base A9008 as preparation for constructing the Stratum VIII platform for silos.

Stratum X

A room of the Stratum X Late Bronze II "residency" type house was found in Area A9. There were four phases of this room.

Stratum XA

The latest use phase of the room in Area A9 consists of a large courtyard surface A9005 (and pottery on that surface A9005.P) surrounded by walls A90l0, A901l and A9014. On this courtyard surface was tabun A9007 in the corner formed by walls A9O1O and A9Oll. In this phase XA the tabun sat across a threshhold between walls A9011 and A9010, blocking traffic that might have moved between the the rooms in Areas B9 and A9. Ash A9009 from the firing of tabun A9007 was tossed into and through the entranceway into the room in Area B9.

West of wall A9011 (just outside the room in Area A9) were found earth floor A9016, bin A9020, and stone mortar A9015, along with a cooking pot and store jars. These items, though located within the excavation area A9, belong to the collection of artifacts found on the floor of the central room of the Stratum X house. See the descriptions in Areas 10 and A10.

Stratum XA is the stage of occupation in this building at the time the fire broke out and badly burned it.

Stratum XB

In the earlier phase XB walls A9O1O, A9Oll and A9014 were again used with a courtyard surface A90l2 (and pottery on it A9012.P). This surface also had a tabun A9O13, located in the northeastern corner of the Area against wall A90l0, thus leaving open the passageway to the room in Area B9 between walls A90l0 and A9Oll. Mortar A90l5 also functioned in this phase on an earlier surface corresponding to surface 9027 in Area 9. The southern wall A90l4 of this room is broken at its eastern (downslope) extremity; in fact, the entire southeast corner of this room has eroded.

The western wall A901l of the room is part of the main wall line extending from Area 9 through Area A9 and into Area B9. The northern wall A90l0 in Phase XB admitted passage via a cobbled threshold into yet another room in Area B9. The eastern wall has been nearly completely lost through erosion, though a small portion of it was preserved in the northeast corner of the area. Packed earth surface A90l2 was not entirely devoid of features but contained little of unusual character; tabun A9013 was built onto it in the northeast corner of the room and a low reflection wall set next to it. A small pit (post-hole?) was also found in the center of the room.

Surface A90l2 made use of the top course of the earlier wall line A9017 as part of the walking area. This earlier line of stones abuts wall A9011, thus pointing to a still earlier phase of the room.

In Stratum XB the room in Area A9 was altered by the replacement of Stratum XC wall A9017 with wall A9014.

Stratum XC

Stratum XC shares some of the main architectural elements as found in Stratum XB——walls A9010, A9011--but with an earlier wall A9017 as its southern limit. Earth surface A9018 was used with these walls.

Stratum XD

Stratum XD represents the earliest phase and arrangement of the room in Area A9. In this phase walls A9011 and A9010 were already in use; wall A9017 served as the southern wall of the room (replaced in Stratum 1OB by wall A9014.) In the southwestern corner of the room, formed by the juncture of walls A9017 and A9011, sump A9031 had been cut deeply through Strata XII and XIII. In this earliest phase earth surface A9019 was the common use surface inside the room. A lined pit/bin or tabun foundation A9036 was set into Surface A9019 in the northeast corner of the area at the juncture of walls A9010 and B9021.

Especially important was. the discovery of a blocked threshhold A9051 in wall A9011. This in Stratum XD had permitted communication directly between the central room of the Stratum X “residency” and the room in Area A9.

South of wall A9017, in another room of the LB house now mainly destroyed by erosion, yet another surface A9030 with a large stone mortar A9037 set into it was found. Two small grinding stones nearby also give evidence of the domestic activities in this room. A small, shallow pit--lined with clay and sherds-—beside the mortar may have been used as a receptacle for holding store jars upright while grain or other material was removed and ground in the mortar.

Stratum pre X

Excavation in 1986 revealed extensive pitting and backfilhing in preparation for the construction of the “residency” building of Stratum X. A deep fill covers the area and extends into Area B9 and the A9/9 balk. This fill was for the most part sterile debris (A9073, A9029, A9038, A9039, A9054, A9055, A9056). Some pitting reached Stratum XII walls, but apparently left the foundation courses of those walls intact. It is likely that the deep fill in preparation for construction in Stratum X was necessary because Area A9 lay open as a drainage downslope through much of its use in the Early Bronze Strata XII-XIV. Even in Stratum XI, the Late Bronze resettlement of the tell, the Area did not receive much architecture because of its slope.

Two phases of Stratum XI were found in Area A9. The resettlers of the tell in Area A9 found remains of Early Bronze Stratum XII walls standing still above ground and in several instances used these remains as foundations for their own building, in what has to be described as a “squatter’s phase” in Area A9. However, the paucity of architecture in Area A9 during Stratum XI resettlement must also be attributed to the contours of the area created by the earlier Early Bronze Str. XII-XIV dedication of the area to draining upslope street and domestic areas.

Wall A9081, first constructed in Stratum XII, was rebuilt and used through both Stratum XI phases. Nearly all of the surviving Statum. XI architecture was found north of wall A9081, extending primarily into Area B9.

In the final phase of Stratum XI in Area A9, rebuilt wall A9081 formed the southern limit of architecture in the area. Walls A9084/B9025 and A9085 abutted Wall A9081 from the north and were used with an earth surface A9087. South of wall A9081 was only a poorly preserved surface A9041. It is most likely that the region south of wall A9081 was an outdoor area, the architecture north of wall A9081 an indoor context.

Stratum pre XIA
Fill A9042 and foundation A9089 mark a construction phase for Stratum XIA.

Stratum XIB

In the first resettlement of the tell after the end of the Early Bronze Age, a domestic structure was built partly in Area A9. This included the reuse and rebuilding of a portion of walls A9081 and A9082, the addition of Wall A9085 and earth surface A9087. All of these architectural features were built north of wall A9081, while to the south only a patchy earth surface A9043 was found in a small segment of the area.

As noted above, the failure to use Area A9 for construction in Str. XI was probably due to the contours established in and surviving from the Early Bronze age.

Stratum pre XI

Debris A9095 is associated with the construction phase for Stratum XIB.

Stratum XII

Stratum XII in Area A9 is characterized by the reappearance of architecture in the area, following its use as an open drain throughout Stratum XII. This renewal of architecture in Area A9 corresponds to the addition of a new building in Area A8, which had been added by way of heavy terracing of Areas A8 and A9. As a result of the terracing, built in order to add usable building and living space to the eastern slope of the tell, Area A9 changed in character from a sloping drain in Stratum XIII probably to a passageway/path to the new house in Area A8 on the newly expanded edge of the tell. Stratum XIII, then, represents a retrenchment of the living space on the tell, while Stratum XII represents the recovery of the space used in Stratum XIV. Something of the growth and contraction of the site in the final two Early Bronze Age strata has been recovered.

The later phases of Stratum 12 remains had been partially disturbed by pitting of Stratum X. The basic architectural configuration in Area A9 seems to have been determined by the architectural structures to the north and to the south of the area. The result in Area A9 is a small irregularly shaped space between buildings, whose south wall is at an oblique angle. The main surfaces of Stratum XII may, therefore, represent only a passage between buildings. Three phases of occupation in Stratum XII were identified.

As found in other areas in Field I the construction of Strata XII-XIII architecture frequently was one atop the other. Str. XII builders utilized, in part, existing walls of Stratum XIII and built upward..

Stratum post XII

Debris locis A9074, A9088, and A9104, along with rockfalls A9114 and A9116, and pit A9076 are associated with the end of Stratum XII. Stratum XIIA

The final phase of Stratum XII consists of several walls used together, two of them in a buttressing function. Walls A9081 and A9082 (in a late rebuilding) were joined to wall A9080/A9090 (wall A9080 buttressing earlier wall A9090) by surface A9091. Wall A9080 had been constructed directly on surface A9091, demonstrating that it functioned with surface A9091. Still another wall, A9079, cut across the area from the northwest to the southeast and abutted walls A9082 and A9080/A9090.

Wall A9079 had been added in Stratum XIIA, apparently as a replacement for the earlier wall A9099 and the parallel wall A9092, both belonging to earlier phases of Stratum XII. The function of this wall across the area may have been simply terracing, as a step down a descending path, or, because it sat partly aboveground, as a barrier to traffic. A small bin, A9102, was found beside wall A9081, cut into surface A9091.

In addition, north of wall A9081 surface A9105 connects the end of Area B9 Stratum XIIA architecture (wall A9085) to area A9. A fuller description of the Area B9 architecture of Stratum XIIA is found in the Area B9 field report. Surface A9077, in the southwest corner of the area has also been associated with this phase, on the basis of relative level only.

Possibly the architectural elements in Stratum XIIA make up an exterior setting, perhaps a passageway between buildings located in Areas B9 and 9 onto street A10172.

Stratum XIIB

Stratum XIIB consists of an earlier arrangement of Walls A9081 and A9082 (seen in Stratum XIIA above) connected to wall A9090 by means of surface A9091. Wall A9092, in the southwestern corner of the area, was connected to walls A9081 and A9082 by the addition of earth surface A9091 and abutted wall A9082 and wall A9090 (within the south balk). Since wall A9092 had been added to the growing architecture of Stratum XII in Phase 12C, it is possible that it was to have functioned as a barrier against entrance between walls A9081 and A9090, or perhaps as part of a descending pathway down to the (slightly lower) Stratum XII house in Area A8.

Wall A9081 was first added in Stratum XIIB, marking a major division between Areas A9 and B9, while apparently simply expanding the dimensions of the Stratum XII building in Area B9. Bin A9102 had also been added beside wall A9081 in this phase XIIB.

Again, because of the irregular alignments of the walls of Stratum XIIB and the sloping surface A9091, it seems likely that the unit in Area A9 represents outdoor architecture, perhaps a passage way between buildings in Areas A9 and 9.

Stratum XIIC

The earliest remains from Stratum 12 consisted of Wall A9099, Wall A9092, Wall A9090 and Wall A9082(B) together with surfaces A9098 and A9100.

Stratum XIIC1

This final sub-phase of Stratum XIIC involved the addition of wall A9099, parallel to wall A9092, built directly on Surface A9100. Walls A9092 and A9099 were joined by an earth surface A9098, while surface A9100 ran to walls A9082B and A9090. This sub-phase appears to represent the repeated need to reinforce the attempts to terrace the eastern slope of the tell for adequate support of housing upslope, or for the need to add steps in a descending pathway toward the Area A8 Stratum XII house. Important to this latter suggestion is the discovery of a threshhold A9112 in wall A9082, just west of wall A9092. This threshhold permitted passage between the Stratum XII street in Area A10 and Area A9 itself. As a unit, however, the architecture of Stratum XIIC1 in Area A9 seems to have functioned as an outdoor passageway between buildings.

Stratum XIIC2

The earlier of the sub-phases of Stratum XIIC consisted of walls A9090, A9092, A9082B joined together by the common surface A9100. Threshhold A9112 in wall A9082 belongs likewise to the earliest phase of Stratum XII.

This sub-phase seems to have been the earliest attempt to consolidate the eastern slope of the tell by means of walls A9090 and A9092, which are understood here to have been terracing walls for upslope construction, or as steps in a descending pathway. The Area remained an open, perhaps, passage between buildings.

Stratum XIII

Area A9 had remained open throughout the period of the Stratum XII settlement, providing drainage and possibly passage from upslope buildings and streets. It is thus possible to account for the numerous lenses and undulating deposits of ashy soil and the absence of significant architectural remains. These depositions, which slope to the North and East, are in excess of a half meter. In the northeast quadrant a sluiceway, for which three distinct phases could be identified, was created. The upper two phases were carefully lined with pottery and other objects to reduce the effects of erosion. The only other architectural features from Stratum XIII are walls A9117 and A9129 on the South and wall A9082C on the West. Walls A9117 and A9129 defined the southern boundary of this open drainage area. Wall A9082C provides evidence for the way in which Stratum XIII builders terraced and stepped their structures upslope. A break or opening in wall A9082C provided an entrance from the upslope street in Area A10.

Several subphases were identified for Stratum XIII. Numerous additional lenses and separations in the debris were noted but could not be traced distinctly over the entire area.

Stratum XIIIA

The final phase of Stratum XIII in Area A9 consisted of a poorly preserved surface A9103 used with walls A9082C, A9117 and A9129. The space outlined by these three walls was an outdoor area, probably used as a drainage or passageway between buildings. A small paved or cobbled section A9119 of surface A9103 was found along the North balk.

Stratum XIIIB

Stratum XIIIB contained two phases of a lined sluice or drain (A9127 and A9130) located in the northeast corner of the area.

Stratum XIIIB1

In Stratum XIIIB1 surface A9122 lead down to the northeast to drain A9127 and simultaneously connected to walls A9082C, A9117 and A9129.

Stratum XIIIB2

In stratum XIIIB2 an earlier version of the lined drain A9130 was used with surface A9 122.

Stratum XIIIC

In Stratum XIIIC a still earlier form of the drain A9131 served to function with surface A9135 and walls A9082C, A9117 and A9129.

Stratum XIIID

The earliest subphase identified as Stratum XIII in Area A9 consists of patchy surface A9137 used with the three walls A9082C, A9117 and A9129. The earliest evidence for Stratum XIII is a leveling operation (debris A9139) extending over nearly the entire area.

Stratum XIV

Two phases of stratum XIV remains were identified in Area A9. Both appear to have been outdoor, domestic remains.

Stratum XIVA

The final phase of Stratum XIV in Area A9 was an ashy surface A9145 that was used with walls A9142 and A9149. In addition Wall A9150, located in the East balk, has been associated with Stratum XIV, though its connection has not been clearly established. The ash on surface A9145 suggests residue from domestic cooking.

Stratum XIVB

The earliest remains of Stratum XIV consisted of wall A9142, cooking platform or hearth A9147 and surface A9148. This installation is well constructed of flat cobblestones averaging 3 cm. to 5 cm. in thickness. The large quantity of ash in the debris above and adjacent to this installation as well as the similarity to installations identified as cooking platforms at Arad identify this as a hearth or cooking platform.

Curving wall A9142 had been initially identified by means of the GPR survey of Area A9.

A9006	Canceled; combined with A9004.

A9007	Str. XA

Tabun built on surface A9005. The tabun was constructed of
coils of clay, three layers thick at its final use, with
ceramic material used to strengthen the construction, finally
covered near its mouth with lime plaster. The tabun was
constructed on top of a circle of small cobble and pebble-sized
stones and tilted down to the east. A small opening in the
southeast side of the tabun probably served as a source of air
and as an entrance for additional fuel. Cooking was probably
done on top of the tabun; support for this interpretation may be
seen in the discovery of part of a large cooking platter north of
the tabun in ashes between walls A9010 and A9011.

The tabun was also built against the eastern face of wall
A9011 and against the southeastern corner of wall A9010,
effectively blocking any passage through the doorway between
these walls in this phase of their use. The ash within the
tabun contained broken pottery, bone, flint and one lithic
pounder or grinder. The thickness of the body of the tabun
(3 layers) suggests a series of rebuilds and strengthenings.

The tabun is located between 70 cm. and 1.57 m. from the North
balk and between 85 cm. and 1.75 m. from the West balk at top
	levels 484.52 m., 484.49 m. below A9008 to founding level 484.01 m.

	ca. 3.10 m. and 5.0 m. from the South balk, between 4.0 m. and 4.7
	m. from the South balk (at the East Balk line), and between
58 cm. and 4.50 m. from the West balk at top levels 484.61 m. (W),

B9010 ran to the northern face of wall A9010. And a threshold
lay at the western end of this wall, leading into a room to
the north. Surfaces A9005 and A9012 run to its southern face; tabun
A9007 was built against its southwest corner; tabun A9013 (in an earlier

Wall along West balk of area, joining wall A9017 in Area 9. In Area
A9 the wall was constructed of two rows of boulder sized field stones
with a rubble core, preserved from one to four courses high. The wall
served as sockle for upper bricks and appeared itself to have been laid
with mortar. This wall has gone through several phases of use and
possibly some rebuilding. In the A9/9 balk the wall was widened in its
final phase by the addition of some stones capped by bricks; the function
of this addition to the wall was to narrow the entrance through the wall
via steps 9020. This wall forms the eastern limit of a large room found
in Areas 9, 10, A9 and Al0; it is also the western limit of a courtyard
found in Areas 9 and A9.

Located 5.0 m. from the North balk, 65 cm. from the West balk (at the
North balk line) and between 1.14 m. and 1.91 m. from the West balk
	(at the South balk line.) At top levels 484.91 m. (N), 484.37 m. (c),
484.19 m. (S) below A9003 and A9008 to founding levels to founding levels
	483.81 m. (N), 483.68 m. (C) and 483.66 m. (S) above debris A9056.

Wall A9014 abutts wall A9011 from the west; surfaces A9005 and A9012
run to this wall from the west. Surface A9016 runs to its western face.
Tabun A9007 was built against its western face. Lower phase wall A9017
also abuts this wall from the west. Sump A9031 was built against the
east face of wall A9011. The continuation of wall A9011 in the A9/B9
balk was excavated as B9022. Wall A10018 abuts wall A9011 from
the west. Wall A9011 was at least 9.4 m. long.

In the lowest course of wall A9011 immediately South of its juncture
with wall A9052 there was apparently a threshold and doorway (A9051)
which had been blocked by the construction of the upper two courses
of the wall. Mudbrick mortar was used in the construction of the wall
with a concentration of the mortar in the northern end of the wall at
the intersection with wall A9052/A10018. Between 1.0 m.
and 2.0 m. from the South balk only the lower course of wall A9011
survived, the upper 2 courses perhaps having been robbed out by pit
A9003. Wall A9011 was offset slightly toward the East just south of
the juncture with wall A9052/A10018. Wall A9017 was clearly bonded
into wall A9011 from the East.

Tabun located in Northeast corner of the Area against walls B9021 and
A9010, constructed of flat coils of clay, four layers thick
(evidence of strengthening and rebuild.) Set against its southern
face is a boulder-sized stone, probably as a heat reflector.
Preserved to a height of 27 cm., a width of 67 cm. along the East
balk. Located between 10 cm. and 77 cm. from the North balk and between
	3.70 m. and 4.35 m. from the West balk at top levels 484.06 m. (N),
	483.93 m. (S) below A9001 and A9005.1 to 483.83 m. inside. Surface A9012
runs to this tabun; it was constructed against the southern face of wall
	A9010.

This tabun, constructed on surface A9012, was set in the corner of
two walls A9010 and B9021, in order to provide heat reflection. But
in addition a low row of stones was set around its exposed southern
side, again for additional heat reflection.

	Debris and pottery from within the tabun have been included here;
this debris includes a fragment of a broken quern and a stone
	pounder/grinder.

Installation of a probable grain-grinding stone or mortar and its
base stone cut to fit the upper grinding stone or mortar. This
installation was found at the surface level of A9016, surrounded by
a cooking pot to the west and at least one small storage to the
north, all of the LB period. On the same surface 9021 in Area 9 were
found restoreable cooking pot, platter, bowl and other vessels.

The upper stone (grinding stone or mortar) is triangular in shape
	(35 cm. (W), 42 cm. (N), 36 cm. (SE)) with a rounded, conical depression
drilled through it. The under side has also been deliberately chipped
in order to form the hole through the stone. This upper stone is
13 cm. thick and sets on a large flint core which has been cut to
hold the upper stone in place, presumably while grinding in it. An
opening between the stones on the south would have allowed the finely
ground material (flour?) to drop through and be scooped into the
	waiting vessel.

The installation was located inside the entrance to this domestic
building, beside a low bench of stones which had been added to the
western face of wall L.A9011 and had been additionally covered with
clay mortar-or brick. The base stone sat on a lower surface 9027
and came to the top of surface A9016/9021; the upper stone with the
bored hole sat at an elevation slightly higher than surface A9016/9021.

It is likely, therefore, that the installation was used through two
phases of the occupation of this house; after a minor destruction on
surface 9027, resurfacing 9021/A9016 was put to the top of the base
	stone of the installation.

Located between 4.72 m. and 5.09 m. from the North balk and between
25 cm. and 74 cm. from the West balk at top level 484.18 m. below
	9019, 10045, and A9008 to 483.84 m. (seen in I.9 North section)
	above surface 9027.

	A round grinding stone of chert was found beside the Installation;
presumably the installation is for the grinding/processing of food.
Located just inside the entrance through Wall 9017, beside deep
basin in Surface 10042, surrounded by store jars and cooking pots.

A flotation sample of the debris within the cup depression in the top
stone of the installation was taken with the following results:

Collapsed debris with cobble stones and ash lenses between walls
	A9081, A9082, A9079 and A9080. Located 3.80 m. from the East balk
and between 90 cm. and 2.15 m. from the North balk (at 3.75 m.
from the East balk) and 1.25 m. from the North balk (at 3.75 m.
	from the East balk).

	At top levels 482.96 m. (NW), 482.91 m. (NE), 482.76 m. (SW) and
	482.68 m. (SE) below debris fill A9073 to bottom levels 482.08 m.
	(NW), 482.29 m. (NE), 482.02 m. (SW) and 482.31 m. (SE) above
mudbrick collapse A9088. This fill should perhaps be included with
destruction debris A9088. However, A9088 contains significantly
greater quantities of mud brick detritus. Locus A9074 appears to
be destruction debris and wall collapse onto and into debris A9088.
Contained on the North by Wall A9081, on the West by wall A9082
and on the South by wall A9079, wall A9080 and sump A9060.

	founding level 482.20 m. (E), 482.15 m. (C) and 482.10 m. (W)
	above wall A9099.

Wall A9079 was built above wall A9099 and may have been an attempt
to rebuild wall A9099. It is five courses high and two rows wide
except for the final course which is only 1 row wide. It is 1.56 m.
long, 57 cm. wide with a preserved height of 1.01 m. on the West and
40 cm. on the East end. Surface A9091 ran to the lowest course of
wall A9079 on the North. On the West it abuts wall A9082. It was cut
by sump A9031. Wall A9079 could not be traced East of Sump A9031.

A9080	Str. XIIA

A large wall extending into the area from the East balk and
running toward the Southwest. Located between 1.20 m. and 1.87
	m. from the South balk (at the East balk line) and between 55
cm. and 1.32 m. from the South balk (at 1.50 m. from the East
balk) and between 2.08 m. and 4.52 m. from the West balk .

	At top levels 482.95 m. (E), 482.84 m. (C) and 482.80 m. (W)
	below debris A9073 to founding levels 482.54 m. (E), 482.51 m.
	(C) and 482.50 m. (W) above surface A9091, debris A9094.

It is two rows wide, and 2 courses high on the east end (to about
60 cm. from the East balk) and 1 course high on the West end.
It is 1.92 m. long, 80 cm. wide and preserved to a height of 40
cm. on the East and 30 cm. on the West. It is constructed of
untreated boulder sized fieldstone laid with mortar. There is no
evidence of a foundation trench, but debris A9094 seems to have
been laid down as a foundation beneath a part of the wall.

One of the stones used in constructing the wall contained a series of
abrasion marks suggesting that it had been used as a sharpening tool.

Wall A9080 was built on surface A9091 along the east; hence, Surface
A9091 was used with wall A9080. Wall A9080 was constructed as a
buttress to already existing wall A9090. Debris A9074 and destruction
debris A9088 were contained against its north side. Wall A9090 is
adjacent to and parallel to A9080 on the south.

	debris A9124, surface A9100 and wall A9082C.

Constructed of fieldstone with mud mortar, 2 rows wide (65 cm.),
and 3 to 8 courses high (57 cm. on the East end to approximately
1.0 m. on the West end). The east portion of the wall (to the
corner with wall A9085/B9030 at ca. 52 cm. from the East balk)
	is apparently a later rebuild.

Surfaces A9087, A9105 and A9118 run to the north face of wall A9081.
Surfaces A9091 and A9100 run to the South face of wall A9081. Abuts
wall A9082AB in the North balk. Rockfall A9114 runs along its South face.
Wall A9081 functions as the South wall of a room formed by walls B9036,
B9059 and B9030. It abuts wall A9082 with the upper courses lapping
up over A9082. Wall A9085 is bonded into Wall A9081 forming a corner
at its East end. Surface A9108 runs to (beneath?) wall A9081 from the

A9082A-C	Str. XII

Wall running along and in the West balk in the Northern half
of the area extending through the North balk into B9 (where it
is designated B9036). In area A9 located between 2.12 m. and
5.00 m. from the South balk and 75 cm. from the West balk at the
North balk line) and 40 cm. from the West balk (at 1.25 m. from
	the North balk).

	At top levels 483.47 m. (S), 483.35 m. (C), 483.14 m. (N) below
debris A9073. The preserved length in A9 including the A9/B9 balk
is 2.88 m. It is 70 cm. wide with an exposed height of 1.55 m.
at the South end and 75 cm. at the North end. For a fuller
description see the locus summary report for B9036.

Surfaces A9087, A9091, A9105 and A9108 run to the East face of Wall
A9082. South of the corner with wall A9081 which abuts wall A9082
from the East, the uppermost course is recessed one row creating
a bench over which wall A9081 laps. This effect appears to be the
result of rebuilding in wall A9082, possibly in preparation for the
erection of the uppermost phase of wall A9081. Debris A9074 and
destruction debris A9088 is contained against the east face of wall
	A9082.

Includes A9086 which has been canceled.

See Sections West, North; Photos 1120, 1127,
		1133, 1156, 1178, 1263, 1264.

A9082A	Str. XIIBC

A rebuild or addition on top of wall A9082B. Located 1.95 m.
from the North balk and 75 cm. from the West balk at the North
balk line and 25 cm. from the West balk at 1.95 m. from the North
	balk. At top levels 483.47 m. (S), 483.35 m. (C) and 483.14 m. (N)
below debris fill B9072 to founding level 482.67 m. above wall
	A9082B.

This upper rebuild of wall A9082 was 2 to 3 courses high
(approximately 48 cm.) and founded in a heavy mortar which
provides clear evidence that the uppermost courses were a
later addition or rebuild. The top course is 2 rows wide
	(approximately 43cm.).

Wall A9082 apparently underwent at least three rebuild phases

Reddish-brown mudbricky foundation material for wall A9084.
Located between 4.10 m. and 5.0 m. from the South balk and
between 1.07 m. and 1.72 m. from the East balk. At top levels
	482.99 m. (N) and 483.08 m. (S) below wall A9084 to bottom levels
	482.88 m. (N) and 482.86 m. (S) above surface A9087. Slopes
slightly to the North. The nearly sterile matrix is highly
compacted, containing a few random cobbles and and small
quantities of pottery, flint, bone and shell.

This foundation material was placed directly on surface A9087,
thus the construction of wall A9084/B9025 and its associated
foundation material radically altered the space within the walls
of the pre-existing room while continuing to utilize surface
	A9087/B9029.

	levels 482.23 m. (E) and 482.33 m. (W) above debris A9107.

Wall A9090 is 2 rows wide and 4 courses high, constructed of dry laid
large cobble and small boulder sized fieldstone. The lower courses
are on a slightly different alignment from the top course suggesting
a repair or rebuild. The upper phase is preserved only by 1 course
in the West end and 3 courses on the East end where it fills a 50 cm.
gap between the East end of the lower phase and the East balk. It is
possible that the upper courses on the East end have filled in a

A9099	Str. XIIC1

Stone wall or sockle beneath wall A9079. Constructed of small
cobbles (avg. 6-10 cm.), 3 rows wide and from 1 to 3 courses high.
Three course high in some areas of the south side with only 1 course
extant on much of the North side. Located between 20 cm. and 3.0 m.
from the West balk and between 50 cm. and 2.60 m. from South balk.
It runs diagonally from Northwest to the Southeast and is
	approximately 43 cm. wide.

	At top levels 482.19 m. and 482.08 m. (W), 482.26 m. and 482.13 m.
	(C) and 482.50 m. and 482.32 m. (E) below wall A9079, Sump A9031
	and wall A9080. To founding levels 482.05 m. and 481.95 m. (W),
	482.07 m. and 481.96 m. (C) and 482.29 m. (E) above fill A9111.
No evidence of a foundation trench was detected.

Sump A9031 robbed out the upper two courses of wall A9099 at the
far eastern end. Surface A9100 runs to it on the North side and
Surface A9098 runs to it on the South side. Wall A9079 was built
directly on top of Wall A9099 except that in the West end some mud
bricky material was used apparently for leveling. Wall A9099 abuts
	walls A9082 and A9090.

	Bin in surface A9091. Located between 1.92 m. and 2.20 m.
from the East balk and between 45 cm. and 70 cm. from the
North balk. A build-up of mudbricky material at the top of
the depression extends the dimensions of the depression to
between 1.82 m. and 2.30 m. from the East balk and between
35 cm. and 83 cm. from the North balk. At top levels 482.09
	m. (build-up around the hole) and 482.07 m. below debris A9088
to a founding level of 481.56 m. below a large flat stone.
The hole was shaped with mudbrick material at the top, which
slopped over on the inside. At the bottom of the depression is
	a flat stone.

Depression A9102 was constructed with the creation of surface
A9091 and cuts surfaces A9100 and A9103 and into debris A9110.
The build-up at the top and the flat stone at the bottom suggest
that the hole was dug to hold a large vessel.

Patchy surface of beaten earth located between 1.10 m. and
2.90 m. from the East balk and up to 1.25 m. from the North
balk. At top level 481.84 m. below debris A9100.1 and above
debris makeup A9103.1. Cut by bin A9102. Probably because of
exposure and erosion, clear connections to walls in the area were
difficult to establish. However, surface A9103 ran to wall A9082C
and most likely also to walls A9117, A9129. Surface/installation
A9119 was probably used with surface A9103.

A9117 and A9129 on the South.

	A9122, drain A9127 and rockfall A9136.

Contains gray to brown clay and ash with some inclusion of pebbles.
This debris consists of a sequence of laminations of clay and ash.
These laminations tend to lens into one another and for the most part
could not be traced as surfaces over a significant area. Surface A9103
could be traced over a greater area, and probably represents a final
	phase re-surfacing of the area.

It appears that this debris may have been deposited over an extended
period of time, resulting from the use of this area during the period
of Stratum XIII as an open drainage channel or passageway for the buildings
	and street upslope.

Wall exposed but not removed. Constructed of cobble and
	pebble-sized fieldstones. Located approximately 2.12 m. from
the East balk and 63 cm. from the South balk (at the East
balk line). At 2.12 m. from the East balk wall A9117 enters
the South balk. At top level 481.97 m. below debris A9104 and
A9107. Not excavated below. It is at least three rows wide (ca.
63 cm.) at the eastern end. Exposed height is ca. 90 cm.

Surface A9103 probably runs to the north face of wall A9117.
It is also assumed here that surface A9137 ran originally to
wall A9117. Surfaces A9122 and A9135 run up to its North face.

Patchy beaten earth surface over most of the area. Located 3.90 m.
from North balk (at 2.0 m. from the East balk) and 3.87 m. from the
East balk (at 1.50 m. from the South balk). At top level 481.75 m.
	(C) below debris A9122.1, rockfall A9132 and above debris A9135.1.

Runs to rockfall A9136 and drain A9131 on the Northeast, to wall A9082C
on the West, wall A9129 on the Southwest and wall A9117 on the Southeast.

See Section North; East, Photo 1364, 1365.

A9135.1	Str. XIIIC

Debris of surface A9135, consisting of medium brown to grey ashy
soil. For location and dimensions see A9135 above. At top level
	481.75 m. below surface A9135 to bottom level 481.65 m. above fill
	A9139, surface A9137 and cobbles A9144.

Within the debris makeup of this surface are several lenses. Some
decayed mudbrick is present within the compacted light brown silt
	and clay matrix.

Runs to wall A9082C on the West, Wall A9129 on the Southwest, wall
A9117 on the South east and drain A9131 and rockfall A9136 on the

A9136	Str. post XIIIC

Rockfall in the Northeast quadrant of the area. Located
approximately 80 cm. from the East balk and between approximately
75 cm. and 1.70 m. from the North balk. At top level 481.57 m.
below fill A9110 to bottom level 481.29 m. above locus A9145.
Stones range in size from cobble to boulder.

The surface of drain A9131 runs up to A9136. The alignment suggests
fall from a wall. However, no wall is extant in the area. Debris
A9139 runs up to it. Surface A9137 also runs to rockfall A9136.
Though this locus of stones extended into Stratum XIV material, it
has been assigned to Stratum XIII because it apparently was partially
	above-ground during Stratum XIII construction and use of the Area;
objects from Stratum XIII were likely to be found in the upper
	portion of A9136.

A whole juglet and a green stone pendant were found next to a large
boulder at the bottom of this rockfall.
