Area A11 Summary

Excavation in Area A11, located at the crest of the eastern slope of the tell, was conducted in the 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980.... 1983, and 1999. Elements from Strata I, X, XI, and XII

Stratum I

Since Area A11 had last been excavated in 1983, significant deposits of balk collapse covered over the excavation progress. All this material collapsed from the West and the North balks (the East and South had been excavated in 1983) was assigned artificially to Stratum I.

Stratum X

Remnants of Stratum X (wall A11084, bench A11089, floor A11091, Sump A11090, fill debris A11096 and A11100) were removed early in the season in reaching into the lower Strata XI and XII. Stratum X in Area A11 had been exposed and recorded in the 1983 season.

Stratum XI

Stratum XI occupants in Area A11, as in adjoining excavation areas, utilized surviving architecture from Early Bronze Stratum XII, apparently settling within the rooms of the abandoned Stratum XII with few architectural additions of their own. This re-settlement of Tell Halif after a long abandonment was apparently brief, followed immediately by the Stratum X building phase. In the 1999 season only the deep deposit of debris A11103 represents the re-settlement of Halif in Stratum XI.

Stratum XII

Stratum XII in Area A11 consisted of an ash-covered earth floor A11104 between walls A11097, A11099, and A11102, with steps A11098 and A11106, and mortar A11105. This architecture utilizes street wall A11099 to form a terrace, as in Areas A10, where the living surface was raised more than a meter above the street surface. The space defined by these three walls may have been an outdoor work area for the preparation of food (see mortar A11105; a possible tabun in the corner of walls A11097 and A11102), since steps A11098 and A11106, built against walls A11099 and A11102, appear to lead from the level of floor A11104 to a still higher terraces west of wall A11097 and north of Wall A11102. In Early Bronze III Strata XII and XIII the east slope of the tell in Field I was covered in a series of terraces rising from the level of the original fortification wall of Stratum XV (completely buried by erosion and subsequent building of Stratum XIV.) The lowest level of housing was located in Areas 8, A8, and B8; a second tier was located in Areas A9 and B9, the third in Areas 10, A10, B10, 11 and A11. Still higher tiers are suggested by steps A11098 and A1106 leading from Area A11 to the west of Wall A11097 and the the north of Wall A11106. The tell site was apparently a non-fortified village in Early Bronze III Strata XII and XIII, the eastern slope of the tell was made accessible for domestic purposes by a series of terrace walls and a sunken street between these walls.

A11002	Str. IB

Burial consisting of stones heaped above a cist grave, which had a stone lining.

A foundation trench A11004 for the grave was observed to have been dug from near the
modern surface of the tell. The resulting trench was backfilled with stones and some
soil. The grave cut through debris A11003, surfave A11005 and fill debris A11015; it
also cut through the eastern end of burial A11007. The modern army trench later cut
through the eastern end of burial A11002, exposing in the process the leg bones and
removing some of the bones of the feet. The burial contained no (surviving) grave goods,
although a faience figurine (Object 350) was found in the backfill of the grave.

Located between 53 cm. and 2.06 m. from the North balk and between 35 cm. and 2.84 m.
from the East balk at top levels 487.24 m., 487.39 m. below (partially) A11003 backfill
	to bottom levels 486.09 m, 486.27 m. above debris A11010.

Plaster floor, badly disturbed by later army trench, burials, and pitting. The floor
was constructed of a thick layer (up to 5 cm.) of white plaster. Because of pitting
floor A11005 was not found associated with any other architecture. Located up to 85 cm.
from the North balk (where it was cut by grave A11002) and also between approximately
2.0 m. and 3.25 m. from the North balk (where it was cut by the army trench and other
pits); and located approximately between 1.06 m. and 4.09 m. from the West balk (where it
was cut by another pit.) At top level 486.50 m. (N), 486.32 m. (SE) below debris A11003

Burial seen in the West balk only. Not excavated since only the
very end end of this burial was caught in section. Main part of
the grave lay to the west of the excavation area. The burial appears
to be a stone-lined cist with large capstones, similar to graves A11002,
	A11007, and A11019. Only one set of horizontal dimensions is available;
the grave is located between 35 cm. and 1.15 m. from the South balk.
Its top level(level from which it was dug) is just below the existing
tell surface at 487.37 m. to a depth of 486.02 m. The grave appears
to be below A11001 debris from the army trench, and it cuts through
	A11003 and A11009 and into A11015.

	See Section West.

A11007	Str. IB

Burial along the West balk of the area. Only half of this stone-lined cist
burial was in the area, with the body aligned east-west. The grave was dug
from the level of the original tell surface; the lower portion of the grave
was lined with roughly faced stones and capped after the body was interred.
The lower half only of the skeleton was in the excavation area. The cist
included soil that had silted into the grave and a few sherds and pebbles.
Water-laid silt was in the bottom most part of the cist.

The grave had been partially disturbed by a later burial L.A11002, which cut
into the eastern end of the grave A11007. This may account for the fact that
some of the smaller bones were missing from A11007.

Located between 1.09 m. and 2.07 m. from the North balk and 1.58 m. from
the West balk. At top level (of stone lined cist only) 486.65 m. below
A11003 to bottom level 486.06 m. above artificial locus AllOll. From the West
section it appears that the grave was dug from the level of 487.40 m. The
grave cuts through A11003, surface A11005, and into bin A110028 and its fill A11033.

Debris material, largely loosely compacted ash that was probably a shallow
pit cut into floor A11005. However, this locus was itself disturbed by the
modern army trench which ran	through the area. Located between 1.25 m. and
1.75 m. from the West balk and between 10 cm. and 1.5 m. from the South
	balk. At top level 486.50 m. below L.A11003 to 486.36 m. above A11015.

This pit cut through surface A11005 and was itself cut by the modern army
slit teench. Part of the ash content of this locus was found on top of
	surface A11005 as well.

Probable surface in southwest corner of area and along the West balk. In
excavation the locus consisted of only a hardened, flat area of clay and
brick-like material. In section, however, it appears to have been a surface
frequently cut by graves and pits. Located at its widest extent 1.25 m. from
the South balk and 80 cm. from the West balk at top level 486.43 m. below
A11003 to bottom level 486.25 m. above A11015. This probable surface was cut
by graves A11006, by the modern army trench, and by pit A11017. It is likely
that pit L.A11008 is responsible for breaking the immediate connection of
A11009 to surface A11005 to the east. This locus is probably to be identified
	with surface A11005.

Foundation trench for bin A11022. Contains platform material (clay and loess)
with random pebble to cobble sized stone. Located in Area All between 3.15 m.
and 5 m. from the West balk and approximately 2.50 m. from the South balk
where it was interrupted by pit A11013). (This foundation trench is seen also
	in Area A10.) At top level 486.30 m. below A11017 and grave A11036; a
resurfacing with platform A11020 material also finished off the construction
associated with the trench. To bottom level 484.56 m. above A11020 and A11055.

This foundation trench, seen only in section in the Southeast corner of Area
All, cut deeply into the platform A11020, creating a wide and deep hole
for the later construction of bin A11022. The trench, after backfill
behind bin A11022, was resurfaced and was itself later cut by pits A11013,
A11017, and the modern army trench. Bin A11030/A10011 also cut through both
bin A11022 and foundation trench A11018.

The presence of this foundation trench is evidence for the multiple phases of
construction and use of the platform stratum VIII.

Burial located mainly in North and West Balks, extending only marginally

A11002 and A11007, with large flat capstones. Located in Area All 40 cm.
from the North balk and 1.05 m. from the West balk. The capstones were at
top level 486.62 m. (but the grave was dug from 487.35 m.) below L.A11003

Platform constructed of loess and clay. The platform material was apparently
laid down in many layers and contains numerous lenses of ash along with
stone, bone, charred material. Located 4.0 m. from the West balk and 5.0 m. from

	above A11032, A11047.

A number of pits cut this platform--A11013, A11017, A110027, foundation
trench A11018, and the foundation trench for bin A11028.

The platform was built in succeeding phases. At one phase wall A11032
(probably a low retaining wall) and installation steps A11035 were cut into
the platform material; later additional platform material was laid on top of this wall.
In addition bin A11022 was cut into the platform by means of foundation trench A11018.
Surface A11031 was also set on the platform at one phase of its growth, and bin A11029 was
	built into/onto the platform.

This platform in Area All is identical to the platform in Areas 11, Al0, 10,
	A9, 9. Includes now A11037, A11039, and A11048, which have been canceled

A11022	Str. VIIIA

Large stone-lined bin, whose original depth was 1.15 m. and diameter at the top, was 1.67 m. The
bin was constructed of uncut fieldstones set into a deep foundation trench A11018 which had been
dug into platform A11020. The founding course of stones were larger (cobble to boulder size)
than succeeding courses (small cobble size), as were the capstones larger. The conical shaped
bin was built with a clay mortar and was used in the final phase of platform A11020. The base/floor
of the bin consisted originally of cobbled surface A11042 packed with clay mortar (compare 11007
of Area 11); later the cobbling was covered with a compacted clay surface A11040. A heavy backing
of boulders was found on the northeast side of the lower courses of this bin (in Area A10).

Because bin A11030/A10011 cut directly inside A11022, as well as because of later pitting A11013,
any direct evidence of function on bin A11022 has been destroyed.

Located between 1.45 m. and 2.95 m. from the North balk and between 3.7 m. and 5.6 m. from the
	West balk (into Area Al0). At top levels 486.4 m. (S), 485.56 m. (NW) below L.A11013 and A11021
	to foundation levels 485.2 m. (S), 485.14 m. (NW) above A11043 qnd A11085.

This bin was built into platform L.A11020 by means of a foundation trench A11018; pit A11013 cut
away its northern part; bin A11030/A10011 cut into its eastern part. This bin is contemporary
with bin 11029. (The evidence of the foundation course and cobbled surface A11042 demonstrates
that the anomalous structure 11007 in Area 11 is also the remains of a similarly sized and shaped
	bin.

Deposit of ash debris in northwest corner of Area. This ashy deposit is
loosely compacted, grey in color and appears to be laminated. That is, it
was deposited in layers or bands. Contains ash and in the northwest corner
some boulder and cobble sized stones.

Located 1.2 m. from the North balk and 2.23 m. from the West balk at top
	level 486.25 m. below debris A11003, grave A11019, and pit A11025 to 485.30 m.
above platform A11020, bin A11029, surface A11038, and wall A11049.

This locus probably represents a broad pit or trenching operation and its
backfill. However, the signs of pitting have been greatly obscured by later
pitting A11025 which cuts into this debris A11027 and by the foundation

bag-shaped sides of the trench. The stone lining included dry-laid field stones,
cobble to small boulder in size. Preserved to a depth of 1.08 m. Located 55 cm.
from the West balk and between 55 cm. and 2.30 m. from the North balk. At top

Stone lined bin along the North balk. This bin had been constructed by means of
a wide foundation trench which was then partially filled with heavy backing or
support stones; the stone lining consisting of cobble sized field stones was then
set into the edges of the foundation trench. (Method of construction is identical
to that used in building bin L.A11022.) Only half of the bin was found within the
digging area. Located ca. 80 cm. from the North balk and between 1.15 m.
and 2.45 m. from the West balk. Survived to a height of only 45 cm. At top
	levels 485.52 m. (W), 485.66m., 485.18 m. (E) below A11025 and A11027 to founding
	levels 485.00 m., 484.98 m. above A11020, debris A11041, step A11044, and wall
A11049. Only the lower courses of this bin have survived. Pit A11025 robbed out
part of the bin on its southwest. It is also likely that an earlier pit A11027
also robbed out the upper portions of this bin.

The building of this bin belongs to the final stage of the platform A11020 complex.

Basket 150 has been transferred to A11025.

Surface of hard, white, thin plaster. This surface made a shallow depression

Wall built of uncut fieldstone, entering West balk. The wall, constructed of
dry-laid cobble to boulder sized fieldstones, was preserved to a height of
1.0 m. at the West balk, a width of 85 cm., and a length of 3.45 m. Located
2.0 m. from the West balk and between 80 cm. and 1.65 m. from the South balk
(at West balk line), also between 1.4 m. and 1.9 m. from the South balk (at
	2.0 m. from the West balk line). At top levels 485.43 m., 485.63 m., 485.37 m.
below L.A11020 (upper phase) and A11028 to founding level 484.63 above debris
	A11061.

The wall may have been built in two phases since the upper courses are 2 rows
wide and the lower only one row wide. The wall was probably used as a low
retaining wall to support the platform material A11020 in one or more of the
early phases of this complex. In the earliest phase a low, single row of
stones retained the platform material. As the depth of the platform increased,
the wall was heightened and widened. Later both phases of the wall were
covered over in a widening of the platform. In both phases of the wall a
foundation trench A11054 had been cut into the platform material in order to
build the wall. This wall abuts wall A11036.

Stone wall constructed of boulder and cobble-sized fieldstones, drylaid, 2 rows wide
(ca. 75 cm.) ca. 4.25 m. long and preserved at least 4 courses high in a pier (1.43 m.
	Not excavated to foundations.)

The wall line contains several separate elements. At its southern end where it abuts
wall 11035 is a stone threshhold 1.48 m. wide at its narrowest point. There are signs
of a door that closed this entrance, seen in a small hole (socket) in one of the
threshold stones. The door pivoted on this stone to the west of wall All055 and against
the face of wall 11035. North of the threshhold the stone base of the wall was built
some 70 cm. higher than the remainder of the wall, forming a stone pier as the jamb for
the door. The northern extension of the stone wall A11055 failed to corner with
cross-wall A11084-BlOO60; rather the corner had been pitted out and backfilled with
bricks or a brick-like material. In addition a low stone bench A11056 faces the entire
	western side of wall A11055.

North of the pier in Wall A11055 at least two large stones of the wall were bridged
over an opening in the stone construction below, forming a covered channel through the
wall. This channel may have been a drain channel; see the "sump" All090.

A11097	Str. XII

Wall along the West balk, constructed of uncut field stones. 2-3 rows wide
(depending on size) with 3 courses in height exposed in the 1999 season. Located
2.35 m. from the South balk and up to 65 cm. from the West balk at top levels 483.82
	m. (S) and 483.91 m. (N). Below locus A11096. Abutted by stairway A11098; wall
A11097 probably abuts Wall A11102; surface A11104 runs to its east face.

Wall A11097 may have functioned as a terrace wall. The top of the wall had a marked
lean toward the east. In cleaning the wall, mudbrick material was noted on the top
	course.

See Sections A11West and A11South; Photo A11097, A11097A; Plan XII.

A11098	Str. XII

Stone steps, presumably leading from a lower (Floor A11104) to an upper terrace
(above Wall A11097.) Constructed of 2-3 rows of cobbles and boulders in 4 courses
(steps). Located 95 cm. from the South balk and between 72 cm. and 3.02 m. from the
	West balk at top levels 483.73 m. (W) and 483.15 m. (E) below Locus A11096.

Steps A11098 were constructed against the north face of Wall A11099 and abut Wall
	A11097.

		See Section A11South; Photo A11098, A1098A, A11098B; Plan XII.

A11099	Str. XII

Wall constructed of uncut fieldstones. Two to three rows wide (70cm.) of dry laid
boulders and cobbles, partially preserved and exposed five courses high (91 cm.)
Located up to 70 cm. From the South balk and 2.35 m. from the East balk at top
	levels 483.96 m. (E), 483.84 m. (W) below A11096.

Steps A11098 were built against the north face of Wall A11099. Wall A11099 is the
extension of Wall A10114, the northern wall of the street that runs through Areas
	A9, A10 and A11.

See Section A11South; Photo A11099, A11099A; Plan XII.

A11101	Str. XII

A heavy deposit of ash 7.5YR3/0 with large pieces of tabun coil. In the west section
it appeared that there might be a layer of crushed tabun coil above the ash deposit.
No tabun appeared to be in situ, except possibly in the west section. Located between
	2.0 m. and 3.05 m. from the South balk and between .60 m. and 1.07 m. from the West
balk at top level 482.91 m. below A11096 and above A11104.

		See Section A11West; Photo A11101

A11102	Str. XII

Stone wall along the North balk constructed of dry-laid, cobble-sized fieldstones
7.5YR7/1. Exposed two courses high (57 cm.), 2-3 rows wide (75 cm.) and 2.65 m. long.
Located between 30 cm. and 1.05 m. from the North balk (at West balk line) and 2.45
	m. from the West balk at top level 483.48 m. below A11091.1. Steps A11106 was built
	against the southern face of Wall A11102; debris A11103 ran to its south face;
surface A11104 ran to its south face. (Probably abuts wall A11097 in the West balk.)

		See A11North; Plan XII; Photo A11102, A11102A.

A11103	Str. XI??

Debris layer of soil 10YR6/4 consisting of a matrix of clay and ash mixed with
	cobble-sized fieldstones (15%) and pottery (10%) Located between 33 cm. and 3.70 m.
from the South balk and between 35 cm. and 4.0 m. from the East balk at top level
	483.17 m. below A11091.1, A11096 to bottom levels 482.79 m. (N), 483.05 m. (S) above
floor A11104, mortar A11105, and steps A11106. Ran to Walls A11097, A11099, and
	A11102, steps A11098 and A11106.

This debris layer contains a mixture of mainly Early Bronze III and a few Late
Bronze I sherds, similar to finds in adjoining excavation areas. As interpreted in
earlier seasons, this layer apparently represents the earliest re-settlement stage
of the tell by Late Bronze I people, following its abandonment at the end of Strtum
XII Early Bronze III. This Stratum XI re-settlement tended to make use of surviving
Stratum XII architecture in a "squatter's phase."

A11104	Str. XII

Earth and ash surface. Located between 35 cm. And 3.85 m. from the South balk and
	between 33 cm. and 3.65 m. from the West balk at top levels 482.88 m. (N), 482.93 m.
	(center), and 483.05 m. (S) below Debris A11103 and A11101. Surface A11104 runs to
	Wall A11097, Stairs A11098, Wall A11099, Wall A11102 and Steps A11106. Mortar A11105
	was set into Floor A11104.

Surface A11104 is poorly preserved and may have been disturbed by Stratum XI
	settlers.

A11105	Str. XII

Stone mortar set into earth floor A11104. A single ground hard limestone 7.5YR7/1.
	Located between 1.12 m. and 1.65 m. from the South balk and between 3.15 m. and 3.62
	m. from the East balk at top level 483.04 m. below A11103. Small stones were used
to support mortar A11105, and chalk plaster was laid on Floor A11104 next to mortar
A11105, probably as an area for food preparation.

Photographs B8 and B8A show a similar stone mortar uncovered in the 1983 season in
	Stratum XII in Area B8.
