Area A10 Summary

Area A10 was excavated under the direction of Area Supervisors S. Herbordt (1979), H. Forshey (1980), R. Mills and E. Coutts (1986), and Jimmy Hardin (1987). Elements of Strata I, III, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, and XV were recovered in excavation.

Stratum I

Stratum I in Area Al0 consists of Al000l, debris from the modern army trench, Al0003, unstratified tell debris which has washed down the slope of the tell.

Stratum III

Silo Al00ll and surface Al0008 survived along the West balk of the Area; on the down slope side all evidence of Stratum III was eroded. In addition a deep pit A10004 belongs to Stratum III.

Silo A10011 and surface A10008 were used with Stratum III silo A11028 and surface A11005.

Stratum VIII

Stratum VIII is the occupation of the of the Late Bronze IIB/Iron I platform and related features. Three phases of Stratum VIII were discerned in Area Al0.

Stratum post VIII

FIll A10006 within bin A10007 marks the end of Stratum VIII in Area A10.

Stratum VIIIA

The final phase of the deep platform in Area Al0 consisted of platform A10005 which was built across the entire Area. In the southwest corner of Area A10 a foundation trench L.AlOO2l (AllOl8) was dug deeply into the platform in prepation for stone-lined silo All022; at the bottom of the foundation trench heavy support stones AllOl6 were set in advance of the silo. Then, as the level of the platform was raised, a low retaining wall A10009 was added along the East balk to support upper surfacing material 10007.

Along the East balk in the final phase of the platform a small stone-lined bin A10007, with a shallow pit AlOOl3 containing an Late Bronze II kernos, was also used in the final phase of the platform.

Stratum VIIIB

An earlier phase of platform Al0005 in Area AlO is apparent; however, there is not clear whether bin A10007, which was used in Stratum VIIIA was also used in this earlier phase.

Stratum VIIIE

As seen in other excavation areas in Field I, the foundations for building the platform of thick layer(s) of clay and loess involved first a deposit of boulders and black ash A10015.

Stratum IX

Stratum IX is a Late Bronze II period re-occupation following destruction of the Stratum X "residency" house by fire.. In Area AlO there were two phases to Stratum IX

Stratum IXA

In the final phase of Stratum IX wall A10018 and a thin surface Al0022 were used together. At this late stage there were no structures on the site; Stratum X wall A10018 simply stood above the collapse of the Stratum X house and was incidentally connected to surface A10022, which was probably an outdoor walking area. At best Stratum IXA represents a squatter phase. In fact, near the West balk surface A10022 appears to be above wall AlOOl8. Evidence of a surface to the north of wall A11018 was not found.

Stratum IXB

In Stratum IXB surface A10023 was used with wall Al0018. This sub-phase was the immediate successor to the heavily destroyed Stratum X house. Stratum IXB appears to have been a domestic phase, though without signs of a house or structure.

Stratum post X

The destruction and abandonment of the Stratum X house is seen in the layer of charred beams and burned bricks A10017.

Stratum X

Stratum X, a large house with a central courtyard, is a major occupation of Field I of the Late Bronze II “Amarna Age”. It is seen also in Areas 11, A11, N10, 10, A10, B10, 9, A9, and B9.

In Stratum X wall Al0018 served as a base for upper brick work and perhaps for a second story. The wall contained six sockets for wooden beams in a half-timbering effect (cf. the half timbering in the Late Bronze palace at Hazor; A. Ben-Tor and M. Rubiato, "Excavating Hazor, Part Two: Did the Israelites Destroy the Canaanite City," BAR 25:pp. 22-39.) An earth surface Al0019 north of the wall had some pottery smashed on it; and earthen surface Al0020 south of the wall had both a large flint saddle quern (upside down) with its rider leaning against the wall as well as a small stone lined silo or pit beneath the quern.

Surface Al0020/10042 was uncovered completely within the large “courtyard’ room; in the process several ceramic vessels were found, including two spouted cooking pots. A small sunken pit Al0025, lined with seven (apparently discarded) basalt querns, had been originally hidden beneath a large overturned chert saddle quern. Its position near this saddle quern and near grain bin Al0028 suggests that it, too, had been used as a storage pit (silo) for grain.

A low line of stones in the corner of walls Al0018 and A90ll formed an above-ground bin A10028 for grain/chaff storage. This bin A10028 made use of the two walls by means of a 5-8 cm. thick plaster of clay and straw covering; presumably the quarter-circle of stones forming the outer wall of the bin had been built higher also and also plastered at one time. However, pit A9003 from Str. VIII cut deeply into bin A10028 and wall A90ll, destroying the upper courses. Chaff remains Al0027 were found inside this above-ground bin.A10028.

wall Al00l8 cornered with wall A90l1. One of the sockets found in the AlO/A9 balk contained fragments of a charred beam.

Stratum pre X

Fills Al0100 and Al0120 had been deposited to provide a level and firm foundation for the Late Bronze IB “residency.” In particular, the western end of the area above wall A10114 was built up by fill A10100 to provide a secure foundation for the major wall of the Stratum X house, wall A10018. Ashpit Al0103 and the adjacent semi-circle of stones (Al0116) appear to have been a firepit, and these have been tentatively attributed to the pre-construction phase of Stratum X also.

Stratum XI

Evidence for Stratum XI in Area Al0 is slight. A one course rebuild on top of wall Al0146 belongs to Stratum XI, particularly in light of the rebuilding and reuse of Stratum XII architecture in Areas A9 and B9. No other architectural remains were found from the Stratum XI settlement in Area Al0. Street fill Al0ll0 contains MBIIC/LBIA pottery suggesting that the Stratum XI occupation may have been taking advantage of exposed architecture of Stratum XII (walls Al0l18, A10151(?) and Al0114) as was seen to be the case in Area B9. The purpose of these fills is not clear. This fill indicates that the street had either remained open after the end of Stratum XII or had been cleared for use by the Stratum XI occupation. The gap in occupation between Stratum XI and Stratum XII makes it unlikely that the street had simply remained open. More likely, the street was cleared for reasons which are now not obvious and then backlilled with the destruction debris of Stratum XII. Perhaps the filling of the street was to stabilize the existing architecture.

Stratum XII

A major feature of the Stratum XII occupation in Area Al0 is the street bounded by wall Al0114 on the North and wall A10118 on the South. Ashy surface A10113 was found north of wall A10114. Street surface A10172 connected both walls A10114 and A10118.

Walls A10114 (except is a small rebuild done in Stratum XII) and A10118 had been built and used in Stratum XIII. Hence Stratum XII in Area A10 represents a reuse of parts of the Stratum XIII architecture, a feature common to the Stratum XII architecture also in Area B9.

Stratum XIII

Stratum XIII, found in six phases of construction in Area Al0, consisted primarily of a series of superimposed “streets” or alleyways between two tall stone walls A10114A and A10165, as well as a series of increasingly higher walls and raised earth surfaces north of the “street.”

Stratum XIIIA

The final phase of the “street” and adjacent surface in the northwest corner of the area consisted of walls A10165, A10114A and surfaces A10152/54 and A10129. Wall A10114, which had received several alterations throughout its use, in its fmal phase was a wall which gently “curved” from the West balk to the North balk. The most recent addition to wall A10114 was visible in the poor quality of construction of the upper courses of stone at the northern end. This last section to be added to wall A10114 appears to have been a way to buttress the earlier brick wall Al0137 on its eastern face and to raise once again the level of the surfaces west and north of wall A10114A.

In this fmal phase of Stratum XIII a localized re-surfacing (Al0152) of street Al0154 raised the level of the western end only of the street. In addition, the differentiation between the levels of surface A10129 (north and west of wall A10114A) and surface A10152/54 remained at ~,. 40 cm.

Stratum XIIIB

Stratum XIIIB was found to have been, much like that of Stratum XIIIA, an earlier version of the “street” or alleyway. In this instance a previous localized re-surfacing A10153/54 over about half of the length of the “street” connected stratigraphically walls A10114 and A10165. Wall Al0114, however, in this phase (its second from last) was itself in a different configuration from that of Stratum XIIIA. Wall A10114B, rather than “curving” toward the north balk as it did in its final phase, cornered with brick wall Al0137.

The room (or more likely open space or “yard”) formed by walls A10114B and Al0137 continued to raise the walking level above the “street” in Stratum XIIIB-C. An ash and earth walking surface was prepared by the deposition of a deep layer of (mostly) ash behind and upslope from the “street.”

Stratum XIIIC

The first architectural arrangement of walls A10114B and A10137, with wall Al0165 at the southern limit of the area, was with “street” A10154 and ash surface A10097. The raising of the “street” level in Stratum XIIIC with the addition of a deep fill Al0155 was accompanied by a much smaller fill and raising of surface A10097 level along the North and West balks. Nonetheless, the overall effect of these raisings of streets, walls and surfaces was to form a stepped “terrace” up the slope of the tell.

A noticeable line in wall A10114B, appearing to separate poorer quality of construction above it from better quality below, also suggests that at this stage wall Al0114 was either raised in height or re-constructed after some collapse. The upper two courses of stone tended to be larger and more loosely laid, whereas the lower courses were of smaller stones and more closely set together.

Stratum XIIID

The architecture of Stratum XIIID represents yet an earlier configuration of stone wall A10114, here named wall A10114C. In this phase “street” A10156 was used with walls A10114C and Al0165. In this configuration wall A10114C was apparently significantly shorter than it was in its fmal phase or in Stratum XIIIB (unless a collapse of part of wall A10114C preceded the additions of Stratum XIIIB). And it had an addition of a low stone wall (or bench?) on its northeastern end, added to its previously vertical end face. This addition to the earliest architectural configuration of wall Al0l14 was done apparently in the interest of supporting or buttressing a still earlier brick wall Al0171 which formed a corner with wall A10114D.

This low stone addition (A10114C) at the northern end of wall A10114 was carefully built, all of the stones set in a mortar and the top of the wall leveled and made more or less even. Apparently at the same time wall A10114C was built, an addition was also made to the street level beginning just inside the eastern balk line of the area; cobbled and plastered surface Al0166 was built from ca. 1.0 m. from the south balk through the north balk and into Area B9. In the northwest corner of the area earth floor A10098 was used at the top level of the older/now-buttressed wall A10171.

Stratum XIIIE

The first two phases of Stratum XIII consist of the same stone and brick architecture, walls A10165, A10114D, and A10171, a common earth and ash surface A10099 along the North and West balks, but two different street phases.

In Stratum XIIIE wall A10165 and wall A10114D (wall A10114 in its earliest configuration) were connected in phase by “street” Al0157. Wall A10114D ended in a straight vertical face at its northern extension, where it was abutted by brick wall A10171 to form a corner. Surface A10099, an earth and ash floor, ran to the inside of this corner.

Stratum XIIIF

The earliest phase of Stratum XIII also consisted of walls A10165, A10114D (wall A10114 in its earliest architectural configuration), connected by “street” A10160. Wall A10171 formed a corner, in this beginning stage of construction, with wall A10114D. The addition of wall A10171 represents an early attempt to raise the level of the walking surfaces upslope, in a terracing operation that was to continue through the end of Stratum XII. However, even at this earliest of phases, the architecture of Stratum XIII in Area Al0 formed a “street” or alleyway.

Stratum pre XIII

The construction phase of Stratum XIII intentionally included a standing (north-south) wall A10158 from Stratum XIV into the (east-west) lines of Wall A10114D, in fact in this way forming part of the straight vertical face at the original northern end of wall A10114D. The north-south wall Al0158 also functioned originally with A10114D as cornering wall. It was the first wall used (reused, in this case) to create the corner in the northwest quadrant of the area. (Stratum XIV wall A10165 was also re-used all through Stratum XIII as well.)

Stratum XIV

Stratum XIV, as seen in Area Al0, had suffered destruction by fire and was buried in a deep deposit of ash and collapsed bricks A10170. Two of the stone walls of Stratum XIV, however, survived sufficiently to be incorporated into the architectural planning of Stratum XIII. Hence wall A10165 served both Stratum XIII and XIV; wall A10158 was incorporated into the new wall A10114 and may have also been used to construct a corner with wall Al0114. But with the addition of wall A10114 through the center of the area the nature of the architecture and its function changed. What had apparently been a house in Stratum XIV was now partially incorporated into a street or alleyway and terrace system.

Stratum XIV itself appears to have had only two phases of occupation. Walls A1O0165, A10149 and A10158 formed elements of what was probably a house. An opening between walls A10149 and A10158 gave passage into the room found in the northwest quadrant of Area Al0. But since the opening shows no signs of having had a door to close it to the outside, the room in the northwest corner of the area was probably an interior room of the house.

Wall Al0165 was found with two loosely built piers or offsets of stone along its northern face. These may have been blockages o f openings through the wall, although at a height well above the final floor of Stratum XIV. Alternately the piers may represent partial rebuilding and buttressing of wall A10165 in Stratum XIII. Surfaces of Stratum XIII, in any case ran to these piers.

Stratum XIVA

The final phase of Stratum XIV in Area A10 consisted of the three walls Al0165, Al0149 and Al0158 with earth floors A10159 and A10163.

Stratum XIVB

The earliest phase of Stratum XIV in Area Al0 also had the same architectural configuration with earth surface A10164 connecting the three walls.

Stratum XV

A deep probe in the southwest corner of the area (in part done in response to a Ground Penetrating radar reading conducted within the area) found destruction debris A10168, apparently representing the end of Stratum XV, and in situ bricks of a broad wall Al0169. This wall was seen in such a narrow exposure, however, that its character and function could not be determined. Nonetheless, the fact that apparently heavy architecture of Stratum XV has been found some 13 meters inside the fortification wall line in downslope areas is in itself important.

A10002	Canceled; combined with A10003.

A10003	Str. I

Unstratified debris washed down the slope of the tell, consisting of a scree of
boulders and cobbles along the eastern side of the area, as swell as brick debris.
Located 5.0 m. from the East balk, 5.0 m. from the South balk, but cut by several
pits in the northwest corner. At top levels 4B6.24 m. (W), 486.34 m. (E) below
	A10001 to 485.60 m. (E), 486.1B m. (W) above A10008, A10007, A10006, A10009, A10005,
A10013, A10010. Includes A10002, which has been canceled.

A10004	Str. pre III

Deep pit in northwest corner of area. Contains great quantity of loosely compacted
ash, 30% boulder and cobbles, much pottery, some brick detritus. Appears to have
functioned as a refuse pit. Located approximately 2.10 m. from the West balk and
2.20 m. from the North balk at its widest extent. At top level 485.65 m. (found
already disturbed by a later pit--seen in section--and both of these pits disturbed
by the modern army trench) below A10008 and army trench to 484.22 m. above A10017.
This pit, as excavated from the level of the army trench bottom, is now seen in the
North balk to have been at least two pits, the latter one cutting already deeply
into L.A10004 (see Section North). Pit A10004 cuts through A10003, platform
A10005, bin A11022 and the upper courses of bin A10011.

Pit A10004 was sealed by surface A10008/A11005, though that surface was pitted
through at still a later time and again by the modern army trench.

A flotation sample of the fill in this pit was taken with the following results:
sample 5081--ash, sherds, lithic flakes, 2 goat or sheep teeth, clay, no
	identifiable plant material.

A10005	Str. VIII

Platform for the LB II bins and installations in Area Al0. Constructed of a mixture
of clay and loess, separable in wide bands of slightly varying colors along the
North balk, and by lenses of ash elsewhere in the Area. As in Areas 9, A9, 10, 11
and All, the clay and loess mixture was highly compacted and contained relatively
few sherds, bones or stones. In Area A10 the platform underwent several phases of
construction, the lowest being the setting down of the clay and loess with a few
pockets of tell debris over a foundation of stones and ash. Later the top of A10005
was altered by the addition of a cobble surface. Still later this cobble surface was
itself covered by a thick layer of a white plaster and clay. A pit was also cut into
the platform in the southwest corner of the area, apparently as a foundation for bin A
11022. Bin A10007 and a shallow storage pit A10013 were also cut into the platform
along the East balk. Located 5.0 m. from the South balk, 5.0 m. from the East balk,
although it was cut in the northwest corner by a deep pit A10004. At top levels
	485.48 m. (NE), 485.29 m. (SE), 485.83 m. (SW) below A10003, A10007, A10009, A10008
	to 484.51 m. (NE), 484.79 m., 485.08 m. (SW) above A10015. Cut by pit A10004.

A10007	Str. VIIIA

Conical-shaped, stone-lined bin along the East balk, cut into platform A10005.
Constructed by means of a foundation dug into A10005 with cobble-sized fieldstones
used as lining. Slightly larger cobble-sized stones were used as capstones. Located
89 cm. from the East balk and between 1.36 m. and 2.24 m. from the North balk at top
	level 485.65 m. (S), 485.52 m. (N) (2-5 courses high) below A10003 to founding level
485.13 m. (E) above A10005. The floor of the bin, however, appeared to be deeper
than the founding levels at 484.98 m.

This bin was used in the latest phase, at least, of platform A10005. A shallow pit,
filled with a fine, silty debris and a 4-handled crater-bowl (A10013), was located
around the western and northern sides of bin A10007, presumably a shallow receptacle
or storage area for pottery vessels used in association with the function of the bin.
Suggests that A10007 stored dry material which was removed to the waiting vessels,
	or vice-versa.

A10008	Str. III

Surface of clay and brick-like material in the southwest corner of the area, the
continuation of A11005. A heavily compacted clay with inclusions of a few pebbles.
Located 2.82 m. from the South balk (where it was cut by the modern army trench) and
approximately 1.75 m. from the West balk (where it was eroded and pitted).
This surface was also badly eroded in its center. At top level 486.77 m. below
	A10003 to 485.96 m. above A10004 and A10005.

Pit/grave A11036 cut this surface, as did the army trench. Downslope it appears to
have eroded away. Includes now A10010, which has been canceled.

Low retaining wall for the addition of upper surfacing material (10007) to platform
A10005 above the earlier cobbled surface in Area 10 and the 10/A10 balk. Only a few
stones of this wall remain, but the remnant of this wall can be seen in the I.A10
South section. Preserved 1-2 rows wide, 2 courses high. Function was to provide
retention for the eastern end of the resurfacing 10007. Located 87 cm. from the
South balk and between 40 cm. and 85 cm. from the East balk. (Extends into Area 10
as wall 10029 1.05 m from the North balk of Area 10.) At top level 485.77 m. (486.06
	m. in Area 10) below A10003 to 485.41 m. above A10005. Apparently built on top of
	cobble surface 10039.

Stone-lined bin or silo along the West balk of the Area. Constructed of cobble-sized
field stone pressed back into the foundation pit dug for the silo. The wall of the
silo or bin slopes inward, forming a deep cup-like construction. Apparently only the
upper portion of the bin was stone-lined, a deeper portion being narrower and
	unlined (now A10014).

Located between 85 cm. and 2.35 m. from the South balk and between 2.91 m. and 4.45
	m. from the East balk at top levels 485.75 m. (N), 485.89 m. (S) below A10012,
A10008 to foundation levels for the stone lining 485.07 m. The bottom of the unlined
portion of the pit extended to 485.01 m. The lined portion of the bin was preserved
	10 courses high (1.30 m.) and 92 cm. wide.

This bin was cut into platform A10005 on the east, through an earlier bin A11022
(LB II) and its fill A11021 on the west, and through surfaces A10022, A11023. In
turn, pit A10004 cut part of bin A10011 away on the north.

The fill A10012 within bin A10011 contained numerous badly preserved iron tools and
fragments of unidentifiable iron implements, some with fragments of wood still
clinging to them. Included in the cache of iron implements were a hoe, parts of
knives, rings of iron (presumably part of traces). The bin at one stage, then, was
used to store iron tools within large earthen vessels.

Debris fill within bin A10011. A matrix of dark brown soil and brick detritus with
pebbles and cobbles, including iron fragments and iron tools which had been stored
within jars inside the bin. Located between 1.3 m. and 2.0 m. from the South balk
and between 3.20 m. and 4.23 m. from the East balk within A10011 at top level 485.60

unlined portion of A10014) above A10017.

Bin contents, several storage jars and iron implements, indicate that the use of the
bin as storage area for these iron tools within the jars.

Shallow pit partly surrounding bin L. A10007, whose purpose was probably associated
with a 4-handled krater bowl found in this pit. The pit contained also dark brown
and dark gray silty soil, a few pebbles. Located approximately 1.4 m. from the East

Wide wall E-W across the area, 4 rows wide, 3-5 courses high. Constructed
of cobble and boulder-sized field stones, dry laid. The northern face of
this wall is built with 6 rectangular niches or sockets in its northern
face for holding beams in place in half-timbering. Large burned beams were
found on the surface to the north and south of the wall and, in one instance,
within one of the sockets itself. The base of the sockets were fitted with
flat stones to support the weight of the beams and upper architecture.

There was a rebuild of this wall after the destruction represented
by A10017; the upper course of stones on the wall is generally much
smaller in size than the lower courses, suggesting a rebuild of the
wall for use with surfaces A10022 and A10023. At the western end of
this wall there is an opening or doorway to the room in Area B10. A
low bin A10028 was built against its southern face at the juncture
	with wall line B9022/A9011.

Located between 25 cm. and 4.8 m. from the West balk and between 1.06 m.
and 2.08 m. from the North balk at the East balk line, and between 2.16 m.
and 2.96 m. from the North balk at its westernmost extent. At top levels
	484.68 m. (W), 484.59 m. (E). platform base A10015 to founding levels
	483.89 m. (E), 483.90 m. (C), 483.92 m. (W) above fill A10100.
	Socket levels are 483.96 m.

Surfaces A10020, A10022, and A10023 run to the southern face of this
Wall; surface A10019 runs to the northern face of the wall.
Corners with wall B9022. Preparation for construction included the
deposit of a fill of brownish bricky material in the area directly
beneath and adjacent to the wall. The western end of wall A10114 was
utilized as a foundation for wall A10018.

A10020	Str. XA

Surface of compacted gray clay and earth. The surface is unbroken	but slopes from
the west downward to the east. A small amount of pottery was found on the surface
and a large saddle quern with its rider. A small stone-lined pit had also been cut
into the northeast corner of the surfaces; then the large saddle quern was turned
over on top of the pit. The rider stone was propped against the southern face of
	wall A10018.

	Located 5.0 m. from the West balk (==surface A9016) and between 2.0 m. and 5.0 m.
	from the North balk (==surface 9021/10042). At top levels 483.66 m. (E), 484.05 m.
	(W) below A10017.

This surface runs to the southern face of wall A10018 and is contemporary with
surface A10019 on the northern side of this wall. Same as surfaces 9021/10042 and
	A9016.

A10021	Str. pre VIIIA

Foundation Trench for bin A11022. This foundation trench was seen in the trimming of the South
and West balks and was not excavated. It appears that in preparation for the construction of
the Late Bronze bin A11022 a deep pit was dug into the already laid platform A10005 and later
filled as the bin was constructed.

Located in the Southwest corner of the area, approximately 85 cm. from the West balk and 75 cm.
from the South balk, at top level 485.94 m. below A10010 to bottom level 484.70 m. above A10005.

This foundation trench cuts deeply into A10005.

		See Sections South, West.

A10022	IXA

Surface seen in South, West and East balks. This is a rather thin surface of
compacted (lightly) soil. It is also uneven and patchy, sloping up apparently to
the top of the remains of wall A10018 after the first use of this wall had ended by
	fire.

Located 5.0 m. from the West balk and approximately 5.0 m. from the South balk to
	wall A10018. At top levels 484.45 m. (NE), 484.05 m. (SE), 484.52 m. (SW), 484.70 m.
(NW) below A10015 (in the south), A1005 in the north and above A10022.1. (Same as
	10040.)

This surface slopes down both to the north and to the south over the
ruins of wall A10018. This is not a high use surface and was above
	wall A10018.

Surface of compacted clay and soil, marked by pottery and patches
of ash. The surface slopes down to the south toward the depression
or deep basin in the earlier surface 10042 in Area 10. This surface
was patchy and difficult to trace. Corresponds to surface 10041 in Area 10.
Located 5.0 m. from the West balk and between 2.10 m. and 5.0 m. from the

Small lined pit next to wall A10013 and bin A10027. The opening of the
lined pit is 30 cm. in diameter; including the stone lining it is 35 cm. in
diameter and 33 cm. deep. Located between 3.64 m. and 4.04 m. from the West balk
and between 1.44 m. and 1.82 m. from the South balk at top level 483.69 m.
below a large saddle quern turned upside down on the pit to a bottom
level of 483.36 m. inside the pit above mudbrick detritus A10120.

This pit is lined with eight re-used, elongated, flat grinding querns.
A clay mortar was pressed into the seams between the querns; the
bottom of the pit was also lined with small pebble-sized stones
pressed into wet clay. A group of flat stones lay between, this
lined pit and wall A10018, probably as a working area. The pit was dug
through surface A10020 next to bin A10028.

The presence of the large saddle quern over this lined pit and an
elongated rider stone/quern leaning against the southern face of
wall A10018 near the saddle quern suggest that the pit was used for
storage of grain as a small silo. The pit when excavated was filled
with destruction debris and a few sherds. A sample of the soil in the
pit was taken, for flotation and analysis. Located in the northeast
	corner of surface A10020.

Ash pit, a semi circular ash deposit partially delineated by a line
of stones along its northern edge. Located approximately 1.0 m. from
the South balk and between 85 cm. and 2.5 m. from the East balk at top
level 483.72 below debris A10020.1 to bottom level 483.31 m. above wall
A10118 and fill A10110. The top level of the associated stones A10116
range from 483.60 m. to 483.65 m. Matrix consists of soft grey to black
ash with inclusions of charcoal, carbonized seed, pottery, tabun fragments
and a piece of etched bone.

The crudely formed semi-circle of stones on the North suggests that this
is an ash or fire pit.

Includes A10111 which has been canceled.

Fill above street A10172 south of wall A10114. Located 1.15 m.
from the South balk (at the West balk line) and between 1.65 m.
and 5.0 m. from the South balk (at the East balk line) and 5.0 m.
from the West balk, curving to the northeast through balk intersection
A10/A9/B10/B9 into Area B9. Runs to wall A10114 on the North, to wall
	A10118 on the south.

	At top levels 483.78 (W), 483.35 m. (E) below fill A10100, ash/fire
	pit A10103 and A10116, and detritus A10120 to bottom levels 482.72 m.
	(W) and 482.62 m.(E) above A10172 and rockfall A10151. Fill A10110
served to raise the level of the ground between walls A10114 and A10118,
after the street between these walls had gone out of use.

Matrix consists of loose ashy soil with substantial inclusions of
bone, pottery and lithics (approximately 25-30 pounds of flint
debitage were retrieved from this fill). A10110 seems to have been
a deliberate fill. This fill, which is a continuation of fill
B9043, is contained by wall A10114 on the North, wall A10118 on the
South, wall A9082 on the East.

The preponderance of EBIII pottery in this fill suggests a secondary
deposition of debris from Stratum XII occupation.

	Includes A10105, A10122, A10133, A10142, A10148 which have been
	canceled.

Ash surface north of wall A10114. Located 2.13 m. from
the North balk (at the West balk) and 3.0 m. from the West
balk (at the North balk line). At top level 483.25 m. below
	fill A10100.

This surface runs to the North face of wall A10114 and extends
	into the North balk.

Surface A10113 was constructed in Stratum XII and was subsequently
abandoned at the end of that settlement on the tell. In re-settling
the site in Stratum XI occupation rested almost directly on the Stratum
XII surface A10113. Material has been distinguished as A10113A (Str. XI)
	and A10113B (Str. XII).

A10114A-D	Str. XI-XIIIF

Drylaid stone wall extending from the West balk and curving to
the Northeast. The wall was built of small boulder and cobble-sized
fieldstones, dry laid in the upper courses and set in mortar in the
lower courses. (This difference in construction corresponds to the
	different re-builds of wall A10114.)

In its final phase of construction the wall was located up to 3.70 m.
from the West balk (where it runs into the North balk between 2.95 m. and
3.70 m. from the West balk), and between 2.15 m. and 2.72 m. from the North
balk (at West balk line). The wall in this final phase curves from the west
balk to the northeast corner of the area. At top level 483.85 m. (W), 483.39
	m. (c), 483.37 m. (NE) below fill debris A10100 to founding levels 481.99 m.
	(W), 481.94 m. (c), 481.90 (NE) above debris A10162. The wall is approximately
4.40 m. long in Area A10 (but seen extending into Area B10 also), and stood
1.53 m. high, ca. 75 cm. wide. {This final phase of Wall A10114 can best
be seen in the North section, slightly offset from the earlier stones of the
	wall.)

Wall A10114 was rebuilt at least two times after its initial founding. The
final rebuild was at its northeastern end, where a very loosely constructed,
drylaid section was built atop a flat section of mortar-laid wall, and up
against a straight face of the earlier form of wall A10114 (See Photo 1330.)
This final rebuild extended ca. 1.35 m. from the North balk and was built
	beginning at level 482.69 m. (S), 482.48 m. (N). This addition (A10114A) was
probably a buttressing of wall A10137, but continued the generally curved
	line of the earlier A10114.

The earlier (second from last, or A10114B) form of wall A10114, then,
apparently ended in a squared face and a flat (finished) lower portion
(originally a bench, or more likely a buttress to wall A10171). The finished
end of stone wall A10114 was most likely abutted by a cornering brick wall
A10137 seen now in section in the North balk. The final rebuild (described
above) was subsequently set against brick wall A10137, creating for the
first time the gentle curve of wall A10114 observed in its final stage.

A yet earlier form of wall A10114 (third from the last phase, or A1014C) was
detected without the curve that characterized phases A and B. In this phase
a more or less straight wall A10114C was abutted by brick wall A10171
	forming a right angle.

Possibly a still earlier form of wall A10114 was detected in that
the lowest course was slightly offset to the south of the upper courses
(see Photos 1334, 1329). It is supposed that the earliest form of the wall
suffered collapse and was rebuilt approximately on the same lines. In addition
earlier wall A10158 was incorporated into wall A10114 (see Photos 1314, 1334)
and was used with wall A10114 to form a corner in the new architectural
	design of wall A10114.

Wall A10114 is part of a street or alley system, with street surfaces A10152,
	A10153, A10154, A10156, A10157, A10160 running to its southern face in Stratum
13, surface A10172 in Stratum 12. Surface A10113 was found running to the top
of wall A10114 on its northern face in Stratum 12. Surfaces A10129, A10139,
A10097, A10098 and A10099 ran to its northern face in Stratum 13. Walls A10158,
A10171 and A10137 abutted wall A10114 from the north.

Deposit of fine black ash north of wall A10114. Located 2.65 m.
from West balk and 2.10 m. from the North balk (at the West balk
line) and 62 cm. from the North balk (at 1.50 m. from the East balk).
At top level 483.24 m. below surface A10113 to bottom level 482.90 m.
	above surface A10129.

The ash is mixed with brick detritus. Patches of plaster and localized
compactions were found. On the East it laps up over mudbrick wall
A10137. On the south it is contained by wall A10114. The undulations
and mixtures of material in this fill indicate a deliberate fill rather
	than aggradation.

In the Northwest corner of the area there is a concentration of small
boulder sized stones. Located 75 cm. from the North balk and 50 cm.
from the West balk at top level 482.96 m. below fill A10123 to bottom
level 482.76 m. As currently exposed these stones appear to be part of
the fill and are without architectural significance although excavation
of the North and West balks could alter this interpretation.

A10165	Str. XIII-XIV

Stone wall along and in the South balk. Constructed of large cobble
and small boulder-sized fieldstones, apparently dry-laid but not clear,
since not dismantled). Located 4.90 m. from the West balk and between
2.81 m. and 3.83 m. from the North balk (at the East balk line),
between 4.75 m. and 5.65 m. from the North balk (at the West balk line).
	At top levels 482.55 m. (E), 482.72 m. (c), 482l A10165 in Stratum 14;
	surfaces A10152, A10153, A10154, A10156, A10157, A10160 run to its northern
face in Stratum 13. Fills A10155 and A10161 also run to its northern face.
Wall A10118 was built immediately on top and slightly to the north of wall
A10165. (This essentially identical line of wall A10118 is identical to
the re-use of wall lines and even of walls in strata subsequent to Stratum
14 in nearly every other area excavated in Field I.)

Wall A10165 was found with two loosely built piers or offsets of stone
along its northern face. The easternmost of these piers was found in
the A10/A9 balk (see Photo 1457) and was ca. 75 cm. wide and extended
40 cm. north of the wall line. It was located between 4.02 m. and 4.68 m.
from the West balk. The other pier (see Photo 1394) was located between
ca. 53 cm. and 1.10 m. from the East balk. It extended ca. 38 cm. from
the wall line. These piers may have been blockages of openings through
the wall, although at a height well above the final floor of Stratum 14.
Alternately the piers may represent partial rebuilding and buttressing
of wall A10165 in Stratum 13. Surfaces of Stratum 13, in any case ran
	to these piers.

A10166	Str. XIIID

Cobble street surface along the East balk. This surface was seen
only in section, since it appears to have been a re-surfacing of the
street surface beginning just inside the excavation area of Area A10.
Constructed of small cobbles, pebbles (80%) and a chalk plaster.
Located 50 cm. from the East balk and ca. 2.05 m. from the North balk.
	At top levels 482.25 m. (N), 482.35 m. (S) below fill A10155 and above
	surface A10156.

Surface A10166 runs to wall A10114C (wall A10114 in its third from last
phase of construction). It was apparently set in as a localized
re-surfacing of lower surface A10156. (However, see the same cobbled
for the entire 4.0 m. length in Area B9.)

See Sections North, East; Plan XIIIB, C, D. See also
the North and East balks in photos 1394, 1395, 1457.

Destruction debris, consisting of burned brick, ash, brick detritus, 10%
pebbles. Located 1.75 m. from the South balk and 2.25 m. from the West
	balk at top level 481.51 m. (W), 481.50 m. (E) below wall A10165, debris
A10164.1 to bottom level 480.80 m. (W) above possible surface line seen
in West balk, 481.30 m. (c) above brick wall A10169.

Represents part of the destruction debris associated with the end of Stratum
	XV.

In situ bricks seen in deep probe in southwest quadrant of area.
Located (as exposed) 1.75 m. from the North balk and between 38 cm.
and 2.25 m. from the West balk at top level 481.30 m. below debris
A10168 and exposed to a depth of 480.52 m. (not excavated below).

These in situ bricks were seen in section in the deepest part of the
probe in the southwest quadrant of the area. They are presently exposed
3-4 courses high (ca. 75 cm.) and 4-5 rows wide (1.85 m.) with a single
row of stones (3 courses deep) on the western face. Probably represents
a broad brick wall only partially found in the probe area.

		See Section South; Photo 1457.

A10170	Str. post XIV

Ash deposited along the North balk. Contains black ash, 5% pebbles
and cobble-sized stones, noticeable quantities of seeds. Located ca.
2.30 m. from the West balk and up to 1.70 m. from the North balk at
top level 482.25 m. below A10099.1 to bottom level 481.68 m. above wall
	A10158, surface A10159.

May represent either destruction debris or fill for construction of
	wall A10171.

Brick wall seen in section at North balk. Located between 1.12 m.
and 2.07 m. from the east balk and ca. 1.1 m. from the North balk
to wall A10114. At top level 482.48 m. below wall A10140 to bottom
	level 481.85 m. above ash A10170.

Surface A10099 runs to its western face; surface A10156 may have run
originally to its eastern face (connection somewhat obscured). Abuts
wall A10114D (wall A10114 in its fourth from final phase of construction).

See Section North; Plan XIIIE. See photo A10 North.

A10172	Str. XI/XIIA

Street surface to wall A10118, seen in South and West sections.
Seen in section only. Located between ca. 3.85 m. and 4.50 m. from
the North balk and 1.18 m. from the West balk at top level 482.70 m.
	below A10110 and above A10152.
