Wall constructed of boulder sized field stones, two rows (60-70 cm.) wide
filled with cobbles and pebbles (rubble core), five to six courses high
(90cm-1.2 m). The wall was dry-laid, plastered on its south face. Located
between 1.95 m. and 4.6 m. from the East balk and between 1.00 m. and 1.80 m.
from the South balk (at the West balk line) and between 1.75 m. and 2.50 m.
from the South balk (at 2.00 m. from the West balk). At top level 484.78 m.
(W), 484.53 m., 484.74 m. (E) below 9001 and 9013, to bottom level 483.88 m.
and 483.76 m. above 9052.
Wall 9006 in the West balk ended in a well-built face and a threshhold or
entrance 10046.
Debris 9003, 9008, 9009, and 9005 run to the wall from the South. Wall 9006
abuts wall 9017 from the west. Surfaces 9010 and 9021 run to this wall from
the south and north, respectively. Installation L.9022 (a circular arrangement
of stone, probably a bin) was constructed against the northern face of this
wall. Debris 9007 and 9011 lay against the southern face of the wall. Debris
9019 lay against the northern face. Platform 9013 and its stone base 9014 were
built on top of this wall near the West balk. A lower subphase surface 9027
also runs to this wall from the north.

Debris layer of collapsed whole and broken mud bricks mixed with smothered
and fully burned ash. The bricks appeared in section as orange-brown on the
outside and black on the inside from being only partially burned. The ash
ranged from black to silver-gray. Near surface 9010 this locus contained a
large number of burned pebbles and limestone chips, probably from the fallen
roof. Against wall 9006 was a large quantity of black ash, in which a saddle
quern was found, resting against the wall but above (not on) the lower
surface 9O10.
Located 4.00 m. from the West balk and 2.50 m. from the South balk to walls
9006 and 9017, and 4 m. from the South balk along the East balk line. At top

wall.

Wall running north-south across the area, constructed of cobble-boulder

of 2.35 m., 65 cm. wide (2-3 rows wide for top courses 4-5 rows wide for
bottom courses (ca. 75 cm.)), 95 cm. high (7-8 courses). Located 2.30 cm.
North balk and and between 1.37 m. and 2.08 m. from the East balk (southern
end) and between 1.10 m. and 1.88 m. from the East balk (at the North balk
line). At top levels 483.16 m. (c), 483.03 m. (N), 483.05 m. (S) below 9024 and
9028 to foundng levels 482.37 m., 482.40 m. above 9042, 482.33 m. (N) and
482.17 m. (S) above wall 9125. (Curiously the foundation of wall 9033 on
the bricks of wall 9125 was done in such a way that stones of the foundation
of 9033 were set on either side and below the top course of these in situ
bricks, straddling the lower wall. This was accomplished, in part, by cutting
away some of the western face of the bricks.) Surfaces 9030, 9075, 9079, 9084,
9085, 9086, 9095/9096, 9097, and 9098 run to wall 9033.
Wall 9033 was found (in the 1983 season) to be a rebuild over an earlier
phase. Hence the wall line as it was used in Stratum XI was built directly
on (though slightly narrower than) its earlier Stratum XIII phase. Indeed, the
Stratum XIII wall was itself built directly above the bricks of wall 9125.
Wall 9032 was partly built on wall 9033 at its southern end. Surface 9065
runs to wall 9033 in its earlier phase of use. Debris 9042 lay against the
lowest course of its eastern face. Pit 9025 cut its southern end. In its lower
phase wall 9033 abuts wall 9041/9071.

The stone foundation was built of uncut field stones (large cobbles), dry-laid,

and was ca. 1.05 m. long.
Wall 9090 abutted wall 9041; surfaces 9049 and 9093 ran to its eastern face,

Stone wall with in situ brick superstructure. The wall is located between
2.05 m. and 2.71 m. from the West balk (at the North balk line) and 1.46 m.
from the North balk (to wall 9041). The bricks are at top level 482.36 m.
below wall 9033; the stone foundation is at top level 481.96 m. (S), 481.86
m. (N). Founding level is 481.28 m. (S) above ash 9099/9046.
Abuts wall 9041 from the north. Surfaces 9115, 9116 and 9120 run to the west
face of wall 9125; surfaces 9044 and 9045 run to its east face. Debris 9114
also rests against the west face.
The bricks of the wall were removed in the 1987 season down to the stone
foundation. The bricks were four courses high, but were cut for the foundation
of wall 9033, leaving evidence of only one row wide. A gray ashy mortar was
used between the bricks. The stone foundation was dry-laid, two rows wide
(large cobbles with pebble fill) and 5 courses high. The eastern face appeared
also to have had a brick-like plaster on it. The wall is 1.45 m. in length,
46 cm. wide and remained up to 1.30 m. high (at North balk).
Includes 9118, which has been canceled.
