Area 9 Summary

Area 9 was excavated under the direction of Area Supervisors D. Zucker (1976), R. Guengerich (1977), H. Forshey (1979), J.P. Dessel (1983), and Julie Galambush (1987).

Stratum I

In Stratum I slopewash tell debris 9001 covers the entire area opened. Included are debris loci 9003, 9005 9007 and 9008 as unstratified debris washed down the slope of the tell. A small pit 9016 ant trench 9036 were also found cut into 9001.

Stratum VIII

Stratum VIII in Area 9 consists of the major architectural features platform 9013 and 9014. LOcus 9013 is the mudbrick-loess platform which is found in Area 10 (as 10015) and in Area 11 (as ll0l0). Only 26 cm. of the platform 9013/l00l5 appear in Area 9, but it is clearly founded on a carefully prepared cobblestone base 9014 which extended approximately 70 cm. in the northwest portion of the Area. This cobblestone foundation 9014 made use of Stratum X wall 9006/10027 by building the cobble base up to its remaining top course.

Stratum X

Stratum X in Area 9 consists of a well-built wall 9006 and its accompanying surface 9010. In addition pit 9012 belongs to this phase. Wall 9006 runs in an east-west direction (and can be seen beneath Stratum VIII platform 9013/10015, as wall 10027 in Area 10). Surface 9010 runs to wall 9006 from the south. Pit 90l2 was dug from the level of surface 90l0 and thus belongs also to this use phase.

Stratum post X

Stratum post X in Area 9 is mudbrick collapse and burned ash 9009, 9015, and 9019 from the destruction of the Stratum X house.

Stratum XA

Stratum XA is a major phase of occupation in the Late Bronze II age at Halif. A portion of a well built domestic structure was uncovered in Area 9, consisting of walls 9006 and 9017 which cornered in the southeastern quadrant, an entrance into the room made by these walls via three steps 9020, an interior floor/surface which was covered with restoreable domestic pottery, stone utensils and bin 9022. Both walls had been covered on both faces with a thick clay plaster to give the walls a smooth appearance. Two outside surfaces of beaten earth also indicated a domestic setting. Surface 9010 which ran to the southern face of wall 9006 and was used with pit 9012. Surface 9018 ran to the eastern face of wall 9017 and had been cut by a deep refuse pit 9025. From the debris of this refuse pit 9025 numerous broken (and some complete) household items were retrieved, several flaked flint blades or scrapers, restoreable vessels, a saddle quern, fragments of another quern, rubbing stones, and ballista/pestles.

Stratum XB

The domestic architecture of Stratum X had been used in an earlier living arrangement as shown by the lower interior surface 9027. On this surface were found also several domestic vessels (lamp, strainer bowl, part of a shallow bowl) and charred material, indicating a partial destruction of the building by fire which required a rebuilding in Stratum XA. This lower sub phase used the ame walls 9006 and 90l7 as did the upper Stratum XA. However, in the earlier use of this building there were only two steps into the room via 9020; the third step was added contemporaneously with surface 902l of Stratum XB.

Stratum XI

Excavation in Area 9 discovered that the Stratum XI settlement on Halif during Late Bronze IA was a substantial one. Four phases of Stratum XI were found in Area 9.

Stratum post XI

Stratum post XI represents the destruction of the Stratum XI building in Area 9 and consists of collapse debris 9031. Little of this~ debris remains since it was cut by Stratum I trench 9036. An Early Bronze III juglet was found in this debris resting against wall 9029.

Stratum XIA

Stratum XI in Area 9 consists of part of three rooms in varying phases of development. The rooms in the final phase of Stratum XI consisted of four stone walls (9029, 9032, 9033 and 9070), a brick wall 9062 and corresponding earth surface 9068 in the northern part of the area, surface 9056 in the southern part of the area, surface 9030 in the eastern part of the area. The three rooms defined by these architectural features appear to be domestic in nature.

Stratum XIA represents a minor change in the architectural arrangement of the rooms, in that a new surface 9068 was set in the corner of walls 9033 and 9070 and in that a new north-south wall 9029 was added to the eastern limit of the room and in that a deep fill was set against the east face of brick wall 9062, raising the living level for the installation of surface 9056 between walls 9062 and 9029. (Apparently west of wall 9062 surface 9039/9065 continued to be used along with the newer additions to the architecture.)

Much of the remains of this final phase of Stratum XI was in badly disturbed condition as a result of later pitting from Str. Pit 9073 cut through the western end of surface 9068. Pit 9063 cut the western end of wall 9070 and apparently destroyed any surface in the southwest corner of the area. Likewise, connections between Areas 9 and 10 were nearly broken by these pits.

Stratum XIB

The rooms of Stratum XIB in Area 9 also consist of stone walls 9070, 9033, brick wall 9062 and earth surface 9075 in the northern part of the area, surface 9039/9065 in the southern part of the area. In this phase, however, wall 9062 has been a new addition to the architecture, having been set directly onto surface 9039/9065, possibly as a simple divider wall for the room in the southern part of the area or as a pier or pillar for roof support.

East of wall 9033, seen in section only, is a possible surface contemporary to this phase, which had been interrupted by pit 9036. In addition, pit 9073 interrupted surface 9075 on the west.

Stratum XIC

Like the above phases, so Stratum XIC made use of walls 9033 and 9070. In this instance the surface in the northern part of the area was earth surface 9079; in the southern part of the area it was surface 9039/9065. However, in Stratum XIC the room south of wall 9070 was a long room undivided by brick wall 9062. Again, a possible surface--seen in section only--may be located east of wall 9033.

Stratum XID

A still earlier phase of the Stratum XI rooms in Area 9 was detected in a surface north of wall 9070. Here walls 9033 and 9070 form the known structure of Stratum XI in its earliest phase. Surface 9084 is the earth surface in the northern part of the area, surface 9039/9065 in the south presumably functioned for this original phase as well as for later phases.

This initial phase of Stratum XI was initiated by the re-building of wall line 9033--on a narrower scale and the re-formation of the central wall line 9070 above wall 9041. Evidence for fills or for leveling in Area 9 are lacking; nonetheless, it is clear that the builders of Stratum XI either cut through Stratum XII architecture or scraped it from the eastern face of the tell. They then made use of lower Stratum XIII walls which became available, rebuilding directly atop the wall lines of Stratum XIII.

Stratum XIII

The following phases of architecture have been assigned to Stratum XIII on the basis of stratigraphic considerations and confirmation of pottery readings. In the matter of stratigraphic considerations, it is clear in both Areas A8 and A8 that a destruction of Stratum XIV was followed by deep fillings and terracings in order to raise the level of the living surface of the tell. Stratum XIV was also destroyed in Areas 9/8; a deep fill 9037 of bricks, stone and occupational debris--like that in Areas A8 and B8--was placed along the faces of existing Stratum XIV walls, and new walls and surfaces of Stratum XIII were added directly above.

The lack of Stratum XII in Areas 9 and 10 has to be explained by means of the builders of Stratum XI architecture placing the foundations deep into the tell as it presented itself to them. In effect, the Stratum XI builders destroyed the architectural remains of the Early Bronze III Stratum XII, although the pottery from the missing Stratum XII is abundantly present in the fills of Stratum XI.

The lower courses of wall 9033 were significantly broader than the upper, pointing to a rebuild of an earlier wall line. Likewise wall 9041 persisted into the building ventures of both Stratum XIV and XIII and even became associated with a portion of Stratum XI. These walls--along with wall 9069--form the major features of the two phases of Stratum XIII.

Stratum XIIIA

Stratum XIIIA consisted of the corners of rooms built on either side of the major East-West wall 9041. The northern room(s) followed the contours set out already in the earliest phase (13E); in fact, the shape of this room(s) was already established by Stratum XIV architectural lines. Wall 9033B (in its earliest phase) abutted wall 9041 and was used with earth surface 9085.

The southern room(s) also followed the earlier lines of Stratum XIV. In this room wall 9069 abutted wall 9041 and earth surfaces 9072 and 9066 ran to both of these walls.

The final phase of Stratum XIII consisted of parts of at least two rooms demarked by stone walls 9033 (in its earlier phase of construction), 9069 and 9041 (reused again in Stratum XIII). Wall 9041--over 2 meters tall--was apparently made a central wall for construction, and against it were set two new walls in Stratum XII--9033 and 9069. Earth surface 9066 was found in use in the southeastern part of the area, earth surface 9085 in the northern part and surface 9072 in a slightly deeper room in the southwestern corner of the area. No eastern wall to the room in the southern half of the area has been found, a fact due to later pit 9036.

The material remains associated with these architectures suggests again domestic setting.

Stratum XIIIB

Stratum XIIIB in Area 9 is represented by an earth surface 9086 in the northerrn part of the area in use with walls 9033 and 9041. Material in situ on surface 9086 also suggests a domestic setting. In the southern half of the area in probes below surfaces 9066 and 9072 were seen corresponding earlier phase surfaces to accompany surface 9086 north of wall 9041.

In Stratum XIIIB the southern room consisted of walls 9069, 9041 and surface 9089. The northern room was made up of walls 9041, 9033B and surface 9086.

Stratum XIIIC

This phase of Stratum XIII appears to have had a localized addition to it, in the form of a re-surfacing of the floor. Hence, two sub-phases were distinguishable.

Stratum XIIIC1

The most recent of these sub-phases consisted of the addition of surface 9095, apparently only over a part of the northern room. Surface 9095 covered the western part of the excavated room and was in use with wall 9041. Surface 9095 appeared to lens out before it reached wall 9033B.

Stratum XIIIC2

The northern room of Stratum 13C in Area 9 included walls 9041 and 9033B, along with earth floor 9096, following still the lines established in earlier phases. However, the southern room (represented by walls 9041 and 9069) had not undergone as many architectural additions as did the northern counterpart; hence, corresponding floor levels south of wall 9041 were not detected.

Stratum XIIID

A still earlier phase of Stratum XIII detected in the northern room in Area 9 was surface 9097, used with walls 9033B, 9041 and a small pit 9112. The room appeared to be domestic in this phase, as well.

Stratum XIIIE

The earliest phase of Stratum XIII also was found in the northern room--surface 9098 enclosed by walls 9033B and 9041. This opening phase of the Stratum XIII domestic building(s) was set against the main East-West wall 9041, which was itself shared with other rooms or buildings in Areas 8 and 10.

In addition, the earliest phase of Statum. XIII was a deliberate re-use of the wall lines established in Stratum XIV. Hence Stratum XIV wall 9041 continued to be used in Stratum XIII, apparently without need of rebuilding of the stone foundations. And the new walls 9069 and 9033B each were carefully fitted atop the in situ bricks on the earlier Stratum XIV walls 9090 and 9125. (This phenomenon of Stratum XIII walls directly on top of Stratum XIV walls was also observed in Areas A8, B8, B9, 10 and AlO.)

Stratum XIV

Stratum XIV, founded deep in the ash deposit (8036/9046) of Stratum XV, went through three phases in Area 9. The architectural lines of Stratum XIV made use of the contours of the tell left from the destruction of the fortified Stratum XV settlement, and also inadvertently established the lines for future construction of Stratum XIII and (to a degree) Stratum XII.

The buildings of Stratum XIV appear well-constructed, with care taken to the building of the stone and brick walls. The larger walls (e.g., wall 9041) were characteristically founded deep in the ash of Stratum XV; a suggestion of town-planning may be inferred from the careful layout and construction of the remaining walls of Stratum XV.

Suggested by the location of Stratum XIV is that this town followed on the site of Tell Halif only after a lengthy period of abandonment of the site (or at least an abandonment of the area of Field I.) The site was abandoned long enough thast post Stratum XV ashes accumulated behind the Stratum XV fortification from the upper town to a depth of 3 m.

Stratum XIVA

The final phase of Stratum XIV is represented by the heavy wall 9041, the main east-west wall across Areas 10, 9 and 8, and by two smaller north-south walls 9090 and 9125. These walls form parts of several rooms found within Area 9, only two of which received extensive excavation.

Wall 9041 and wall 9090 form a corner of a room in the southwest quadrent of Area 9 and were in use with surface 9126. Surface 9049 was used with the same two walls in the southeast quadrent, forming a portion of yet another room with the wall 9040. A corner of a room in the northwest quadrent of Area 9 was formed by walls 9041 and 9125 with surface 9115. Surface 9044, east of wall 9125, probably represents still another room in the northeast quadrent of Area 9; however, pitting in Area 8 has removed evidence of architecture of Stratum XIV further east.

The building(s) represented by this architecture appear to be domestic units, though planning and construction was done with care.

Stratum XIVB

In Stratum XIVB again walls 9041, 9090, and 9125 form rooms of a house or houses, with surfaces 9093 in the southeast quadrent, 9045 in the northeast, and 9116 in the northwest. A possible surface line was seen in the South balk below surface 9126, making an earlier use of the room in the southwest, as well.

Stratum XIVC

The earliest phase of Stratum 14 was found only in the northwest room formed by walls 9041 and 9125. There surface 9120 was seen directly on the ash 9099/9046 of Stratum XV. This first phase of Str. 14 included also “installation” 9121 and bricks 9122, neither of whose functions is clear since both were located largely within the West balk of the area.

The construction of the Stratum XIV walls represents an effort of considerable skill in construction, a fact demonstrated by the way the walls were founded and by the tight fitting of the stones of the walls. The effectiveness of the Stratum XIV builders was also appreciated by the subsequent rebuilding of Stratum XIII on the same lines as that of Stratum XIV, as well as by the re-use of these lines in Stratum XII.

It is likely that the Stratum XIV town represents a resettlement of the mound following a lengthy abandonment. The depth of secondary deposition of ash of Stratum XV suggests a period of time for this abandonment sufficiently long for up to 3 m. of ash to have been deposited by natural means inside the curtain walls of Stratum XV fortifications.

Stratum XV

Elements of Stratum XV fortification and post XV destruction debris were excavated in a small portion of Area 9. The results of this excavation are reported in the adjacent Area 8 Summary Report.

9021.1	Str. XA

Debris of surface 9021. For dimensions see 9021 above. Consisted of highly
compacted clay, light-brown in color, ash, charred wood, and few stones.
The lower levels of this locus contained clearevidence of a minor destruction:
charred wood, ash. At top level 484.02 m. below 9021 to bottom level 483.80
	m. 493.86 m. above surface 9027. This debris runs to walls 9006 and
9017, installation 9022, and to steps 9020. The Lower ashy charred wood
was under the upper step of 9020, indicating the later addition of the
third step when surface 9021 was added.

Includes 9026, which has been canceled.

Installation (bin) constructed of boulder and cobble-sized stones,
placed in a semi-circular arrangement. Probably used for dry storage,
possibly of a clay or a plastering agent, since a pile of red-brown
and orange-brown clay was found partly in and next to this installation.
Located between 10 cm. and 1.15 m. from the West balk, and between 95
cm. and 2.0 m. from the North balk. At top level 484.20 m. below 9019
	to 483.80 m. above 9027.

This installation was used through two sub-phases of this LB building,
since it was exposed above the level of surface 9021 and was founded on
surface 9027. Surface 9021 runs to it, as does debris 9021.1. Debris
9023 fills the installation. This installation was built against
the north face of wall 9006.

9033	Str. XI/XIII

Wall running north-south across the area, constructed of cobble-boulder
sized field stones, dry laid. Preserved (as exposed in Area 9) to a length
of 2.35 m., 65 cm. wide (2-3 rows wide for top courses 4-5 rows wide for
bottom courses (ca. 75 cm.)), 95 cm. high (7-8 courses). Located 2.30 cm.
North balk and and between 1.37 m. and 2.08 m. from the East balk (southern
end) and between 1.10 m. and 1.88 m. from the East balk (at the North balk
	line). At top levels 483.16 m. (c), 483.03 m. (N), 483.05 m. (S) below 9024 and
	9028 to foundng levels 482.37 m., 482.40 m. above 9042, 482.33 m. (N) and
482.17 m. (S) above wall 9125. (Curiously the foundation of wall 9033 on
the bricks of wall 9125 was done in such a way that stones of the foundation
of 9033 were set on either side and below the top course of these in situ
bricks, straddling the lower wall. This was accomplished, in part, by cutting
away some of the western face of the bricks.) Surfaces 9030, 9075, 9079, 9084,
	9085, 9086, 9095/9096, 9097, and 9098 run to wall 9033.

Wall 9033 was found (in the 1983 season) to be a rebuild over an earlier
phase. Hence the wall line as it was used in Stratum XI was built directly
on (though slightly narrower than) its earlier Stratum XIII phase. Indeed, the
Stratum XIII wall was itself built directly above the bricks of wall 9125.

Wall 9032 was partly built on wall 9033 at its southern end. Surface 9065
runs to wall 9033 in its earlier phase of use. Debris 9042 lay against the
lowest course of its eastern face. Pit 9025 cut its southern end. In its lower
phase wall 9033 abuts wall 9041/9071.

Brick wall--single stacked line of bricks seen in section only in the
South balk. Treated as a wall here. Consists of seven bricks, one on top
of another. Located between 1.5 m. and 1.82 m. from the West balk (no
