Area 6 Summary

Area 6 was worked under the direction of John Wade (Area Supervisor) and Harold Forshey (Field Supervisor). Work in area 6, as in area 5, had the objective of clarifying the relationship between glacis 6004 and wall 5006. Excavation extended East into the 6/5 balk and included only two loci, glacis 6004 and soil 6006. Glacis 6004 belongs to the Early Bronze defensive system of Stratum XV.

Stratum I

Stratum I in Area 6 consisted of unstratified slopewash debris 6001.

Stratum III

Assigned to Stratum III are a short segment of wall 6002 and surface 6003.

Stratum XV

Excavation in area 6 and the 6/5 balk clarified the relationship of glacis 6004 to the retaining wall 5006. Sectioning of the glacis down to bedrock shows wall 5006 to be a retaining wall set in against the foot of the glacis. This wall was set down into a foundation trench cut into soil 6006.

6002	Str. III

Wall constructed of boulder sized stones, roughly shaped. The
wall is dry laid and remains one course high (30?50 cm.) and
one row wide (43 cm.). The wall is located 1.00 m. from the South
balk and 43 cm. from the West balk. At top level 480.66 m. and
	480.46 m. below 6001 to 479.89 m. and 480.16 m. above glacis 6004
	(see Area 7, 7007). The wall was founded at 479.97 m. (S)
and 480.09 m. (N). This wall was cut into glacis 6004 at the
West balk line; surface 6003 runs to it from the East.

See Section South; Plan 22; Photo 209, 210

6003	Str. III

Surface running to wall 6002, of a light gray, heavily compacted loess/mud
brick material. It is an even surface for about 55 cm. to the East where
it has been eroded on the tell slope. Contained very little pottery. Located
1.0 m. from the South balk and between approximately 50 cm. And 1.05 m. from
the West balk. At top level 480.11 m. below 6001 and above 6003.1.
This surface was set on the earlier glacis 6004 and against wall 6002.

See Section South; Plan 22; Photo 206

6003.1	Str. III

Debris of surface 6003 consisting of light gray, compacted loess and clay
with little pottery and no stones. Located 1.00 m. from the South balk and
between 50 cm. and 1.05 m. from the West balk. At top level 480.ll me below
	6003 to 479.8O m., 479.77 m. above glacis 6004.

		See Section South.

		I.6.3 7/29/76 Iron I, Iron II

6004	Str. XV

Glacis consisting of alternating layers of brownish to yellow clay and
crushed limestone chalk sloping at about a 40 degree angle. Located 4.0 m.
from the South balk and between 4.92 m. from the West balk (retained on the
East by wall 5006 which extends up to .50 m. into the 6/5 balk). At top
level 478.35 m. below debris 6001 to bottom level 476.45 m. (West) and
	475.85 m. (East) above soil 6006.

The lower 75 cm. of the glacis consisted of a level fill of crushed limestone
including large pieces. Above this, alternating layers of crushed limestone
and clay were deposited with tip lines running downslope. The South section
shows pitting into the glacis in the 6/5 balk.

6005	Str. pre III

Artificial locus of material beneath wall 6002, consisting
of a gray?brown, compacted clay and a portion of the glacis
makeup 6004. Located 1.0 m. from the South balk and between
5 cm. and 50 cm. from the West balk. At top levels 479.97 m.
	(S) and 480.09 m. (N) below wall 6002 to 479.94 m. (S) and
	480.09 m. (N) above glacis 6004.

		See Section South.

		I.6.7 7/12/77 EB, Byz

6006	Str. Pre XV

Soil resting on bedrock. Located 1.0 m. from the South balk and between
2.75 m. and 4.50 m. from the West balk at the base of wall 5006. At top
levels 476.45 m. below glacis 6005 to bottom level 475.87 m. above bedrock.
A narrow foundation trench for wall 5006 was cut into this soil. The soil was
reddish brown with a few stones. The one or two sherds of basket 38 are from
the very top of this soil which may have been disturbed by glacis construction
	activity.
