Base of stone-lined bin, a semi-circular or circular installation constructed of cobbles and pebbles
set into clay platform llO10. It is constructed with a single outer row of large cobble sized field stones
and three to four inner rows of small cobble sized and pebble sized field stones. The installation of
four to five circles of stones is 45 cm. wide. Located 1.85 m. from the South balk, between 40 cm. and

This wall is built partially on wall 11015 and partially on surface 11016. The center of this wall
line has been used as a cist for the burial of two infants 11021. It is possible that wall 110I1 is to
be associated with the burials themselves. But it is more likely that burial 11021 was cut into wall
11011. The stratigraphy involving this locus has been obscured by later intrusions.

Cist burial of two infants. The grave was constructed of a circle of boulder and cobble
sized fieldstones capped by three flat boulder sized "flagstones". Within the grave were
the remains of two infants interred apparently either simultaneously or relatively close
in time, since both skeletons were articulated.
The tomb was located between 12 cm. and 1.18 m. from the West balk and between 1.26 m. and
2.05 m. from the South balk. At top level 486.52 m., 486.56 m. below 11002 to bottom level

Material within the tomb itself consisted only of silted soil, pebbles and a few sherds.
The tomb was apparently constructed in a shallow grave, since its foundation trench was
detected only to the top of the sealing stones of the grave. The grave may have been dug
from the level of wall 11011 or slightly higher. The grave cut through wall 11015 and into

Below-ground silo constructed of cobble and boulder sized field stones one row
wide (15-30 cm.), eight courses high from its internal surface 11030 (ranging
between 20 cm. to 1.10 m. in depth). The installation is roughly circular with
measurements of approximately 2.00 m. wide (E-W) and 2.50 m. (N-S). The interior
face of the silo had been coated or plastered with a fine clay to at least half
of its preserved height.
Located 2.05 m. from the West balk and between 1.95 m. and 4.30 m. from the South
balk. At top level 486.32 m. (W), 485.55 m. (N), 485.90 (E), 486.13 m. (S) below
11002, 11016.1, and 11024 to founding level 483.88 m. above wall 11035.
This silo was cut into platform ll010; it joins wall 11012 on the SE and was built
against mudbrick wall 11032 on the NW. Debris 11024 filled the interior of this locus.
Surfaces 11030 and 11034, interior to silo 11029, marked two phases of its use.
Deep fill 11030.1 for construction of surface 11030 prepared silo 11029
for secondary phase at a higher level. In its secondary use 11029 served
with surface L.11030 as a storage bin for large storage jars (see locus)
11024. A lower, earlier surface 11034 was discovered as well as an additional
1.5 m. of stone courses to the installation itself. In its primary use with
surface 11034 installation 11029 was a silo. Mortar and a clay plaster were
also found as a lining in the earlier phase of the bin.
Additional evidence for the two phases of use of installation 11029 was seen
in the differing style and shape of the upper courses of stonework associated
with surface 11030. The larger stones used in the upper courses and the circular
shape (as opposed to smaller stones and oval shape of the courses below surface
11030) indicate two phases of construction as well as two phases of use.

Stone base of a wall belonging to the Str 10 house and reused in Str 9.
Constructed of boulder and cobble sized field stones, 3 rows wide (75 cm.)
and 3-4 courses high(91 cm.), it is located up to 3.55 m. from the East balk,
where it abutts wall 11074, and between 10 cm. and 1.05 m. from the North
balk (at the East balk line) and between 1.62 m. and 2.40 m. from the North
balk at its western end. At top levels 484.87 m. (W) and 484.72 m. (E) below
platform 11010, platform base 11036 and lined pit 11029. Abutts wall 11074
on the west and wall 10043 on the east. Surfaces 11073, 11068, 11045, 11038

Earth surface covered with burned chaff, frequently disturbed

South balk (near the East balk line where it appears to coalesce

Surface is uneven and patchy. The indication of this surface is
that the utilization of the area changed from domestic to something

11042 Str. IXB
Circular bin constructed of one to two courses of boulder and cobble
sized stones, one row wide, dry-laid. Only partially within the digging
area. Located between 25 cm. and 2.6 m. from the West balk and 1.45 m.
from the South balk at top levels 484.99 m., 484.96 m. below debris
11041.1 to founding levels 484.56 m. (W), 484.5 m. (E) on surface 11038.
Surface 11038 was used with this above-ground bin 11042, although bin
11042 was also built on surface 11038. An interior surface 11046 was
covered with burned chaff and represents a deliberate fill within the
bin (perhaps in only a secondary use-phase of the bin alone.)
A few of the top stones of wall 11074 were incorporated into the western
part of the bin. The function of the bin is not clear from its contents:
apparently after the bin was no longer servicable it was used for the deposit
and burial of a cow's skull (midden 11072). Burned chaff on surface 11046
(prior to deposition of 11072) may indicate it was a storage bin for grain or
for the by-product Of threshing.
See Section South.
