Area 10 Summary

Area 10 was excavated under the direction of Area Supervisors D. Zucker (1976), H. Forshey (1977, 1980), JP Dessel (1983), J. Hardin and Jean Stanton (1987). Elements of Strata I, VIII, IX, X, XI, XIII, and XIV were excavated.

Stratum I

The most recent activity in Area 10 is represented by debris 10001 which is debris from the army trenching operation present in Area 11 to the west. Beneath the layer of debris l000l is the layer of tell debris 10002 which has been washed from the top of the tell.

Assigned to activity of Stratum I are a group of walls 10003, 10009, 10010, and 10031, which were probably connected in terracing a section of the tell slope for agricultural purposes. Walls 10003 and 10009 corner, with wall 10009 abutting wall 10003. Also walls 10003 and 10010 meet in the SW corner of the Area. Therefore, though the walls of this phase are in bad repair, they form a series of walls that have been constructed for a common purpose. Strengthening the argument that these walls were used for the agricultural purpose of terracing the slope of the tell is the presence of the apparently imported soil layer l0005, which appeared only behind (upslope) wall 10003. None of this dark brown soil was over wall 10003 or on the downelope side. This debris 10005 differs from all the other debris loci in the Area and appears to be garden soil. The terracing seals over pit 10006, which has been assigned to a slightly earlier phase of Stratum I.

Pits 10006 and 10044 cut deeply into Stratum VIII-VII architecture. The pits were apparently rubbish trenches in which successive burnings produced a series of laminae of ash and solid brick debris. Pits 10006 and 10044 cut into Stratum VIII platform l0015.

Stratum VII

In Area I0 the first substantial architectural phase found in excavation was the so-called storage complex Stratum VIII-VII. This storage complex, though built and used in LB IIB Stratum VIII, continued to be used in Iron I stratum VII.

In Area 10 the storage complex consisted in a deposition of a clay, loess, and midden mixture to a depth of more than 1.5 m. The findings in Area I0 paralleled those in excavation areas to the north both in the depth of the deposit of the platform and in the repeated raisings of the depth by additional deposits of the platform materrial. As in the other areas to the north in Area I0 also the platform appears to have been associated with lined pits dug into the platform.

Stratum VII is a major architectural phase of Area 10. In this stratum a variety of architectural features were used simultaneously. Platform 10015, built on a cobblestone foundation l0025, served as the base for a number of constructions. Bins lOOll, 100l6 and 10028 were either set into laminated platform 10015 or onto it (this seews to be the case with bin 10028). A raised working area built of a thick white plaster l0007 between two retaining walls 10029 and 10030 was placed on the platform 10015 and up to the upper courses of the three bins l00ll, 100l6, and 10028. Thus the raised plastered area made access to the tops of the bins easier. In addition, mudbrick wall 10023 and its stone sockle 10024 were constructed on platform l00l5, probably forming part of a wall which extended across Area 10 to join Wall 10030. Stratum I pit l0006 has interrupted this wall line l0030/l0023. Originally Wall 10023/l0030 retained surface 10007 on its western extent. At the same time wall 10030/10023 formed the eastern edge of still another level of platform 100l5; seen in the southwestern and the northwestern corners of Area 10 was another step-up of the platform that extended into Area 11. There are, then, three working levels present in the Stratum VII platform and installations: a low section of the platform l0015 in the northeast and southeast corners (also in Area 9), a higher working surface in the center of the area (10007) and a step-up in the platform behind wall 10023/l0030 in the southwest and the northwest corners (and into Area 11). Associated also with this Stratum VII is the surface 10018 for bin l00ll. Stratum VIII-VII platform l0015 makes use of the earlier architecture of Stratum X (wall 10027) by constructing a cobblestone foundation base 10025 on either side of this wall 10027. Hence Stratum IX-X is sealed by Stratum VIII architecture.

The final use phase in Area 10 consisted of the platforrm 10015, a series of small bins 10011, 10016, 10028 and l0035. Two low retaining walls l0029, and 10023/10030 also belong to this phase. However, the white plaster surface 10007 best represents the final phase since it raised the height of the platform to correspond to new construction in Areas 11 and All. In raising the level of the working surface by means of 10007, the earlier cobbled surface l0039 was covered over.

Stratum VIII

Stratum VIIIA

In Area 10 an earlier working and use level of the storage complex was discovered along the North balk and in the 10/A10 balk. This surface 10039 was a cobbled surface which itself was raised above the downslope (in Areas 9, A9) portion of the platform (see retaining wall A1009 in Area A10) and which may have been used with a bin in the lO/AlO balk now obscured by foundation trench AllOl8. It is likely that bins l00ll, 10028, and 10035 were used in this sub-phase VIIIA as well as in the Stratum VII phase.

Stratum Pre VIII

This sub-phase is the construction stage of platform 10015 by the deposit of fill l0025 and ash lens 10037 across most of Area 10.

Stratum IX

Two phases of occupation were discerned in Area 10 as belonging to Stratum IX. Both phases appear to be outdoor surfaces which coincidentally include some architecture from the destroyed Stratum X building.

Stratum IXA

Surface 10040 covered all of Area 10 and ran to the remains of Stratum X wall 10027. Surface 10040 seems to have been a courtyard or outdoor surface.

Stratum IXB

Surface 10041, also apparently a courtyard or outdoor surface, was used with the remains of Stratum X walls 10027 and 10043. Against wall 10043 an above ground bin 10048 had been built of stones in Stratum IXB. A large krater bowl and a string of beads and seals were found on floor 10041.

Stratum X

Stratum X in Area 10 consists of three phases of construction and use.

Stratum XA

Stratum XA in Area 10 consists of a room of a well-planned and well-built house with rooms which opened off three sides of a main (ca. 6.5 x 6.5 central room, probably a courtyard). The courtyard (almost entirely contained in Areas 10 and Al0) was itself probably partially roofed; fallen beams in the destruction debris of the house near a large, flat rock (pillar base) sunk in surface 10042 close to the center of this room support this conclusion. The large, flat rock 10052 functioned as a base for a wood support beam. The courtyard-character this large room is also supported by the objects found on the floor: several f00d-preparation work areas, grinding stones and installations, a relatively deep and wide (deliberate) depression in the floor, a bin and lined pit, several store jars, bowls, etc.

Entrance to the large, central “courtyard" room was through three breaks in the walls. A stone-paved threshold 10046 led into this room from the south through wall line l0027/9006. A second entrance 9020 to the east (from a street or open courtyard) was also via a stone-paved threshold which stepped up into the enclosed central room through wall 90l7. A third threshold led to a room (presumably the main living quarters) to the north of this large, central “courtyard” through wall A10018.

Along nearly the entire length of the wall line 10027/9006 was a stone bench. This had been a modification of the room-plan made earlier (in Stratum XB) than the re-surfacing of the room with surface l0042. Likewise, along the line of wall 10043 was found a low row or wall of small cobble-sized stones (l0050), unevenly placed or piled; this 10050 apparently functioned as a retaining wall for dark red-brown clay which was used as a base for the construction of wall 10043. (The same technique of construction appeared as l0063 in the foundation of wall 10027.) Upper brick-work can be assumed to have been set onto the stone base l0027 (seen in the excavation of fallen bricks in Areas 10 and 9); however, wall l0043 may have been stone steps leading to the roof of the building or to a second story.

Stratum XA in Areas 10 and Al0 also included several installations and work areas. First, there were at least four parts of the central room used for the grinding of grain and other material, i.e., food preparation areas. A large chert saddle quern and its rider were found already Area AlO next to wall A100l8; a second grinding installation consisting of a pierced, triangular mortar set onto a base stone of chert chipped to hold it into position, along with a round pestle stone beside it, was found also in the 9/A9 balk just inside threshold 9020. A smaller saddle quern was found just inside the threshold 10046 in Area 10. Also in Area 10 a large stone mortar l0058, and near to it two patches of plaster flooring/food-preparation areas and a rounded grinding/pounding stone, were located at the West balk of the Area. Grain was contained in the room in two bins and a small stone-lined pit in Area AlO (bins A10028, Al0029; pit Al0025). Burned and decayed chaff was found in bin Al0028 in the corner of walls A10028 and A9Oll.

Pit Al0025 was itself interesting in the care of its construction; it had been lined with seven (discarded) basalt grinding querns set on end. Although no discernible grain remains were found in this pit, it is likely that it too served as a small storage pit or silo for grain (especially is this the possibility in light of its position near a saddle quern).

Three stones l0054 were set on the floor L.l0042 (the smaller of the three a saddle quern placed on top of the other two) in the southern part of the room and were used as a support for tall, narrow-necked storejars; one jar was found still supported by this installation and evidence indicates that a second store-jar had been leaning against this installation at the time of the fire. Finally, a wide and relatively deep depression in the living surface.l0042 must also be listed as an “installation" in this central “courtyard” room. This depression in the surface was located near the triangular-shaped mortar installation and the flat stone base 10052 for roof-support beam. Its function remains obscure since at the time of the destruction by fire nothing appears to have been stored in the depression. Nonetheless, the depression in the surface was deliberate: it had been carefully surfaced with packed clay and earth, and its life had extended through earlier phases. In fact, even in the subsequent Stratum IXB a plaster-lined depression was set into floor 10040 in approximately the same spot. In addition, the perimeter of this depression in Stratum XA had been ringed with pottery of several types; only one vessel appears to have rolled into the depression itself.

The arrangement of pottery on the floor of this central “courtyard” room is also of some interest. A large number of ceramic vessels was found smashed in place by the collapse of the walls of the burned building. Curiously the vessels in Area 10 were found in roughly two rows or lines extending from either side of threshold l0046 toward the wall Al00l8, forming, as it were, a corridor. Presumably the arrangement of vessels in these two lines was an attempt to provide clear walking space for someone entering the room. In addition, the pottery excavated in the “courtyard” room provided a second curious feature--several instances of vessels bearing a potter’s mark set into the clay while still wet.

Stratum XB

In Stratum IXB an earlier earth surface 10053 had been set within the same walls of the large “courtyard” room that were used by the Stratum XA floor 10042 (see above). However, there appears to have been added in Stratum XB a stone filled pit (dug from and used at the level of surface l0053) which presumably functioned as a shallow sump for run-off water; the sump, however, was covered over in Stratum XA and went out of use.

Stratum XC

In Stratum XC a still earlier surface was found in Area 10 to have been used with wall 10027 and wall 90l7; this surface represents the original surface phase of this building. In Area 10 the packed earth floor l0056 accompanied the foundation of walls 10027 and 10043 on a prepared and slightly raised table of clay, retained in both instances by low walls or rows of cobble-sized stones (l0050 and 10063).

Stratum XI

Stratum XI in Area 10 is represented by a few sections of walls, a broken surface and deposits on that surface, all of which date to the transitional Middle Bronze IIC/Late Bronze I period. Heavy pitting activity in Area 10 disrupted the architectural features severely prior to the construction of the Stratum X house. Five phases of Stratum XI were found in Area 10.

Stratum XI was found to have been a long—lived settlement on the crest of the tell in Field I. The re—settlement of the tell following its abandonment since the end of Early Bronze times began with an apparent clearing of whatever ruins remained on the immediate surf ace of the tell; in the process virtually all traces of the final Early Bronze Str. 12 were removed from both Areas 9 and 10. Walls of Stratum XIII were then incorporated into Stratum XI building efforts coincidentally. Only in Areas A8, A11, and B10 were the walls and surfaces of Early Bronze Stratum XII missed by the construction preparation for the new Late Bronze settlers of Stratum XI. In fact, it now appears to be true that the re—settlement, as well as the later Late Bronze strata, did not make use of the slope of the tell much beyond the East balk of Area 9.

The construction that. followed the clearing of the tell face was solid and lasted through four major phases of re—building and a minor phase of occupation (Stratum A) just prior to an even more ambitious building phase in Stratum X.

Stratum post XI

The final phase of occupation in Stratum XI was a “squatter’s” occupation prior to the construction of the Stratum X “residency” house and consisted in Area 10 of a thinly preserved surface 10062 over the entire area and two walls 10074 and 10075. Surface 10062 was the setting for a “flint knapper” whose debitage and tools were found in situ.

This Stratum XIA MB IIC/LB IA phase in Area 10 consists of two broken sections of walls (l0075 and 10074) and a badly pitted surface 10062; a portion of this surface near the South balk was covered with a cobbling. Of interest, however, from this phase is the discovery of a flint-knapping site on surface l0O62. Beside wall 10075 a large flat stone had been partially embedded into the surface; it was used as a seat or bench by the knapper. This conclusion can be supported on the basis of the discovery of the stone tools used by the knapper to strike and prepare a core for production of blades. Both tools, one a simple spheroid of hard limestone and the other a smoothed sphere of diorite, lay to the immediate south (right hand of the knapper) of the bench. In front of the knapper’s bench (to the east) was located a pile of debitage from the dressing of (probably two) chert cores in preparation for knapping canaanaean style blades (l0065).

Stratum pre XIA

Both following the destruction of Stratum XIA by fire and prior to its demise considerable pitting activity took place in Areas 10 and 9. Two large pits cut across Area 10——pits 10076 and 10087—— thoroughly disturbing all of the Stratum XI remains and some of the Stratum XIII remains in the southern half of Areas 10 and 9. It is assumed here that the deep trenchings--probably in unoccupied areas of the settlement near the end of Stratum XI--was done in search of building materials. Walls in both Areas 10 and 9 show signs of robbing. In addition, stones apparently discarded as unuseable for construction are found together in the northernmost part of the pit along the North balks of Areas 10 and 9.

Stratum XIB

At an earlier, lower phase walls 10074/10083, 10102, and 10075 formed a room in Area 10 with surface 10077 along the south balk and surface 10080 within the confines of the three walls. Pit 10076 destroyed most of the evidence for the function or utilization of the room. Wall 10083/10074, now partially removed by pit 10076, once cornered with wall 10075, the main North—South wall of ther architectural unit. Wall 10075 in turn cornered with a large wall 10102 at the North balk. Architecture and activities east of wall 10075 were thoroughly destroyed by pit 10076 and badly damaged west of wall 10075.

Deep filling had preceded the installations of the new surfaces of Stratum XIB. Stratum XIB came to an end through a destruction involving fire, as shown by the ash and fallen bricks on surface 10080.

Stratum XIC

An arrangement of walls 10083/10074, 10075 and 10102 apparently identical to that of Stratum XIB were in use in Stratum XIC. In this earlier phase of the Stratum XI house, surface 10084 was interior to the room and surface 10081 along the south balk.

Again, pit 10076 destroyed most evidence of the use of the rooms in Area 10.

The changes within the rooms in Area 10 in the formation of Stratum XIC involved the covering over of earlier features along the South balk of the area.

Stratum XID

Stratum XID also consisted of walls 10083/10074, 10075, and 10102. But, in addition, in use during Stratum XID and XIE, a low wall 10112 seen in the South balk served either as a divider in the room or as a retainer of a “stepped” surface. South of wall 10083 was found earth surface 10086, with its eastern extent some 10 cm. higher than its western extent beyond wall 10112. Surface 10090--partially pitted by trench 10076——served within the room in Area 10 and connected all three walls.

Stratum XIE

The original phase of construction, following an apparent filling with bricky debris 10095, consisted of the building of (first) wall 10102, (second) wall 10075 and (third) wall 10083/10074. (Wall 10112 may have been added at any point in this sequence. The clearing of the area for construction chanced upon earlier (Stratum XIII) wall 10100/10101, whose top course was incorporated into the scheme of construction. Within the room in Area 10 the living surface was permitted to be “stepped” (or at best “cobbled”) by means of wall 10100/10101. Surface 10094 ran from the west face of wall 10075 to the east face of the top course of wall 10100/10101. The living surface then coutinued beyond and at the top level of wall 10100/10101 as surface 10108.

Much the same was true south of wall 10083/10074. There surface 10096 ran to the eastern face of both wall 10112 and the top course of wall 10100/10101 (split by the foundation for wall 10083), again forming a slight “step” in the surface, which was continued as surface 10092 further to the west.

East of the main wall 10075 the only undisturbed trace of Stratum XI was found in the form of an anomalous installation 10099, perhaps a tabun, built against wall 10075. Installation 10099 has been assigned to the original phase of Stratum XI on the basis of its virtually sitting in the lower Stratum XIII ash and pottery of surface 10104. However, whether installation 10099 was a tabun of an unusual construction or whether it was simply a store jar whose function was achieved by its being buried in the living surface is not determined. Again, all evidence around it was disturbed by pit 10076.

Stratum XIII

Stratum XIII in Area 10 consisted of three phases.

Stratum XIIIA

In the final (surviving) phase of Stratum XIII in Area 10 it was discovered that wall 10100 and wall 10101 are parts of a single wall cut by the foundation for Stratum XI wall 10083. It was also seen, therefore, that wall 10100/10101 belonged to an earlier level of occupation. Surface 10110, which ran to the western face of wall 10100/10101 (but beneath wall 10083) provided the necessary clue that the earlier level was Early Bronze III. In addition surface 10104, patchy and broken because of Stratum XI construction and pitting, was found to the eastern face of wall 10100/10101 and connecting to the small portion of wall 10111 which entered the southeastern corner of the area.

Although the architectural elements--walls 10111, 10100/10101 and surfaces 10110, 10104--cannot be yet identified with any particular type of domestic, public or other structure, it is clear that the two walls are in proper attitude to form a right angle corner south of the digging area. Joined with evidence from Area 9 an apparently large room of Stratum XIII has been exposed. In addition, something of the domestic nature of the room is implied by refuse or fire pit 10103 cut into surface 10104.

Stratum XIIIB

An earlier phase of the same room was found in Area 10 beneath the fill for surface 10104. In this earlier phase, however, there is abundant evidence of a fairly carefully prepared living or use area. Surface 10107 was partially pebbled (in the northeast portion of the area) with pebbles several deep. An “installation” 10105 was found (probably partly destroyed) in the south—central part of the area. Its function may have been simply to provide heavy cobbling for a part of the living or work surface. However, its generally circular shape suggests a specific area prepared for a specialized use. Perhaps installation 10105 was the base for a more complex installation now thoroughly removed as the use of the room changed.

Stratum XIIIC

An additional phase of Stratum XIII was discovered (XIIIC) in the form of a stone-lined pit or silo 10140, earth surface 10138 and stone wall 10101. Surface 10138 probably originally ran to wall 10102, though its connection has been cut by pit 10076.

Stratum XIV

Stratum XIV was reached beneath the fills of Stratum XIII and Stratum XI pit 10076. Three phases of Stratum XIV were found in Area 10.

Stratum XIVA

The final phase of Stratum XIV included wall 10102 (in its earliest stage of construction), brick wall 10123 (a corner of a room barely in the excavation area), stone buttress wall 10134, and brick installations 10145 and 10146. Surface 10133 connected all of these architectural elements in a common phase. Surface 10132 lay inside the corner of brick wall 10123.

Stratum XIVB

Stratum XIVB also included walls 10102B, 10123, buttress wall 10134, installations 10145 and 10146, all connected by the thick white plaster surface 10130. This surface, cut by stone-lined pit 10140, sloped down toward the northeast and was itself pocked by stones that had apparently been thrown or set into the plaster while wet. A large collection of small rubbing or polishing stones was found on surface 10130 along the line of wall 10102, each of the stones showing patination. In addition a small patch of cobbles 10144 were cemented together on surface 10130, probably as a small work area, a feature which suggests that plaster surface 10130 was utilized as a protected (inside) surface.

Stratum XIVC

A small probe along the South balk beneath surface 10130 located another earth surface 10148, probably belonging to an earlier phase of Str XIV, though no connections to other architecture was found in the narrow 1.0 m. X 1.0 m. probe.

Terrace or retaining wall constructed of field stones (cobbles and
boulders), dry laid with a soil fill between the stones. It is two
rows wide (40-60 cm.), one to two courses high (35 cm.) and 2.65 m.
long. The wall stops or has been robbed about 60 cm. from the South
balk, but appears again in the South balk. The wall was built in a
NNE-SSW direction. Located between 60 cm. and 3.00 m. from the Sorth
balk and between 75 cm. and 1.40 m. from the West balk (at its southern
	end). At top level 486.59 m. (S), 486.41 m. (N) below 10002 to bottom
	level 486.29 m. (S), 486.08 m. above 10004.

Debris 10005 runs to this wall from the West, with wall 10003 retaining
this debris. Wall 10009 abuts 10003 from the NW. Wall 10010 appears to
abut 10003 at the South balk.

4.0 m. from the South balk and between approximately 70 cm. and 4.0 m. from the
East balk. The exact dimensions are obscured by erosion in the NE and by pit
	10006. At top levels 486.06 m. (W), 485.90(W), 485.74 (E) below 10001 and 10031
	and above 10007.1.

This surface runs to retaining walls 100029 (from the west), 10030 (from the East),
to bin lO016 (from the northwest), to bin lO0ll (from the west and north) and to
wall 10023 (from the East). Pit 10006 cut through it in the western sector of the
area. The plaster surfacing material itself is directly on platform 10015.

This plaster appears in part to seal over a pit or a foundation
trench (possibly an earlier bin which went out of use) seen dug
into platform 10015 in the NW corner of the Area. The plaster,
then, serves as a resurfacing above 10039 in order to reach the
new, higher level of bin A11022.

		188, 189.

10007.1	Str. VII

Debris of surface 10007, consisting of white chalk and nari plaster with
some pebbles and cobbles. The thickness of the plaster was up to 25 cm.. For
	dimensions see 10007 above. At top level 485.90 m. (W), 485.74 m. (E) below
	10007 to 485. 45 m. (center) above platform 10015 and cobbles 10039.

This locus was laid against retaining walls 10029 and 10030, as
well as bins 10016 and 10011, and mudbrick wall l0O230. Pit 10006
cut through this locus at the west balk, and the locus has also
eroded in the NE corner. This locus and surface 10007 were
contained on the west by wall 10023 (probably the same as wall
10030, since cut by pit 10006). It was a well prepared work area
associated with the use of bins 10011, 1OOI6, and 10028, since the
plaster surface brings the work area up to or near to the tops of
	these bins.

Terrace wall constructed of large cobble-sized field stones, dry
laid one row wide (20-40 cm.), one course high (15-20 cm.) and 85 cm.
long. It is located 85 cm. from the West balk and between 2.20 m. and
2.60 m. from the South balk. At top level 486.35 m. below 10005 to
486.17 m. above pit l0006. This line of stones runs to wall 10003 (and
probably also to wall 10010, though the connection was not seen).

This is another part of the terracing system seen with wall 10003 and
	wall 10010.

Wall line seen only in the trimming of the West balk. Presumably it is a
terrace wall which ran North-South and joined with walls 10003 and lOO09.
It is constructed of cobble-sized fieldstone, was dry laid, one course
high and one row wide (so far exposed). Located 1.35 m. from the South
balk and 20-25 cm. from the West balk, to a height of 10-25 cm. At top

Bin, oval in shape, constructed of small cobble-sized field stones,
apparently dry laid but supported from the outside by plaster surface
10007 laid against it. It is 7 courses high at its highest preserved
state (with the lowest course set into a plaster matrix), one row wide
at the top courses, two rows wide around the base courses. It had a
specially laid surface on the inside (10018). It was preserved to a
height of 63 cm., a width of 85 cm. at the top courses and 1.18 m. at
the base courses, a length of 1.22 m. The eastern end of this bin has
been removed or destroyed in antiquity.

It is located 90 cm. from the south balk and between 54 cm. and 2.15 m.
from the east balk. At top levels 485.83 m. (northeast), 486.17 m.
(southwest), 485.94 m. (southeast) below 10004, (level of its interior
	surface 10018 was 485.53 m.) to foundation levels 485.61 m., 485.66 m.
	above 10015.

Surface 10007 runs to this bin from the north and the west. This bin has
been cut and sits on part of platform 10015. Surface l0018 runs to the
interior of the wall of 10011. Debris 10012 was inside the bin.

Loess or clay platform which covers the entire area. Composed of
multiple layers of gray to tan loess or clay, the layers separated
by thin black ash lenses. In its final phase, this platforn, served
as a base for installations, one plaster surface, and walls.

The platform is located 5.00 m. from the West balk and 5.00 m. from
the South balk. It continues into Area 9 (see 9013) and into Area
11 (see ll010). At top level 485.74 m. below 10001 in the SE corner
where it has been partly eroded, at 485.54 in the 10/9 balk below
	10001, at 485.46 m. in the NS corner below l0001, at 485.70 m. in
the center of Area 10 along the North balk below 10007.1, at 485.72
at the center of the Area along the South balk, and at 485.88 m. in
the SW corner below 10023. To 484.98 m. (south central) and 485.08 m.
(SE corner) above stone foundation 10025, 10027, and 10037.

The platform was constructed in three deliberately planned steps.
The lowest is in the sector on which both bins 10016 and 10029 sit.
The middle step has been prepared by the placing of a white plaster
10007 behind retaining wall 10029. The third step in the platform is
formed to the west of mudbrick wall 10023.

Bins 10011 and 10016 were set into this platform by means of
foundation trenches which were observed in the South and East balks.
Bin l0028 simply appears to have been set onto the platform. Walls
10029, 10030 were built on the platform to divide it and to retain
white plaster surface 10007, which itself was laid onto the
platform. Wall 10023 and its stone sockle 10024 were also built on the
platform. Pit 10006 cut into the platform.

The platform itself was constructed of several layers of clay/loess
laid down successively and without a great gap in time between the
separate operations. It was built on a stone foundation 10025/9014
and on top of the earlier wall 10027/9006.

There is evidence of at least three phases of the building of
the platform and of construction on the platform itself. After
the platform had reached a depth of more than one meter, cobbles
10039 were set onto the platform, later to be cut by a pit or
foundation trench, which was itself later sealed by the addition
of a thick plaster surface 10007. In addition bins 10035, 10011,
and 10016 were cut into the platform in Area 10.

	Now includes 10013, 10019, 10019.1, 10020, 10020.1, 10021, 10022, 10026,
and 10036, which have been canceled. Same as 9013, A9002, A10005,
	A11020, 11010.

Circular bin along the East balk, constructed of a thick flat
boulder-sized limestone as base and a circular wall of small cobbles.
The wall of this bin is one row wide (12 cm.), 2-3 courses high (32
cm.) with a diameter of 98 cm. The wall shows signs of having been
plastered on the inside. The base and wall of this bin have been
set into platform L.10015 by means of a foundation trench.

Located between 70 cm. and 1.65 m. from the South balk and 79 cm.
from the West balk. At top level 485.53 m., 485.65 m. (wall), 485.43

10018.1	Str. VII

Debris of bin floor l0018, consisting of hard compacted gray clay and
loess which has been specially placed into the bin and over the first
course of stones of the bin wall. Contained little pottery, a few pebbles.
Located within bin 10011 (for dimensions see above on l00ll). At top
	level 485.53 below 10018 to 485.43 above 10015.

The makeup of the surface of bin 10011 was not different from the material
used in the construction of platform 10015, but appeared to have been set
into the bin after the bin was cut into 10015.

Mud brick wall in the SW corner of the area, constructed of gray, yellow
and orange-brown (fired) bricks which appear to be of varying sizes in section
(between 12 and 15 cm. thick, some are 40 cm. long). Its remaining height is
five bricks high (see Section S) and two to three bricks wide. Located 87 cm.
from the West balk and 48 cm. from the South balk. At top level 485.90 m. (and
at 486.26 m. at the South balk line) below 10005 to 485.63 m. above stone sockle
10024 and partly above 10015 platform.

This wall was cut by pit 10006 (probably it originally extended to in situ
bricks in wall 10030.) This wall was at one time a divider wall on the platform
and also supported another level or step of platform 10015 behind it (to the west).

Stone sockle wall, constructed of cobble and boulder-sized field
stones as base for mudbrick wall 10023. It was one row wide (17 cm.),
one course high (26 cm.) and 51 cm. long. Located 51 cm. from the South
balk and between 15 cm. and 32 cm. from the West balk. At top level
	485.86 m. below 10023 to foundation level 485.60 above platform l0015.

There appears to be a layer of plaster partially beneath sockle 10024
and partially beneath wall l0023 (see Section S). Sockle 10024 was cut
	by pit 10006.

		See Section South.

10025	Str. pre VIII

Stone foundation for the construction of platform 10015, consisting of
cobble-sized fieldstones, dry laid, one to three courses deep, plus ash
and some brick detritus. This material was intended to provide a relatively
level and broad area for the construction of the clay and loess platform
10015. Located 5.00 m. from the South balk and 5.00 m. from the West balk.
	At top levels 485.08 m. (E), 484.98 m. below 10015 and 10037 to a founding
level of 484.26 m. above surface 10040 and wall 10027.

It was also observed that wall 10027/9006 had been used as part of the
stone foundation for the platform. 10025 is the same as 9014.

Now includes 10038, which has been canceled.

10027	Str. IXAB-XABC

Stone wall line along the South balk (it is the extension
of wall 9006 and the southern limits of the Stratum X building.)
The wall was two rows wide with a rubble core, preserved from one to four
courses high. It is dry-laid from uncut boulder and cobble-sized field
stones. At the western end of wall 10027 an extension of in situ burned
bricks was seen in balk trim. This stone portion of the wall is located
90 cm. from the South balk line and between 19 cm. and 1.82 m. from the
East balk. With the brick extension the wall is located between 19 cm.
	and 2.76 m. from the East balk. At top levels 484.68 m. (W), 484.34 m.
	(E) below 10015 and 10025 to founding levels 483.84 m. (E), 483.88
	m. (c) above 10066.

Surfaces 10040, 10041, 10042, and 10053 run to this wall from the north.
Surface 10041 connects wall 10027 in a common use phase with wall 10043.
Stone bench 10047 was constructed against its northern face.
Destruction debris 10045 lay against its eastern and northern faces.
Same as wall 9006 in Area 9.

The wall was seen to have had a rebuild in its use with surface
10041; surf 10042, the main living surface of the Str. X phase,
was beneath the western addition to this wall. This addition
consisted of large boulder-sized stones (and a few cobbles)
serving as a base for upper brick work. During the surface 10041
phase (Str. IX) wall 10027 was extended to at least the length
of 2.75 m. where it enters the South balk. In this final phase
of the wall it was preserved to a height of 98 cm., a width of
	70 cm.

100042	Str. XA

Surface of compacted earth and plaster (in patches), uneven with several
shallow and deep depressions and basins. It is marked by smashed restorable
pottery, objects, stone tools, and destruction debris. This was probably a
(at least partially) roofed courtyard or completely roofed central room
to the house. The pottery, objects and installations suggest a large room
	(c. 6.0 m. X 5.5 m.) used primarily for the preparation of food.

Excavated in Area 10 between 1.25 m. and 5.0 m. from the West balk and between
	1.5 m. and 5.0 m. from the South balk. At top levels 483.76 m. (10/A10 balk in
	NE), 483.84 m. (10/A10 balk in NW), 483.89 m. (SW), 483.74 m. (SE) below 10045
	destruction debris and above 10042.1.

A large, flat boulder-sized stone was set into surface 10042 between 4.33 and
4.58 m. from the South balk and between 48 cm. and 1.22 m. from the East balk,
located on the northwestern edge of a deep depression or basin built into
the surface. The stone was the base for a post which served as roof support.
In fact, in destruction debris 10045 several large sections of charred beams
were found near the stone (see Section N).

Also in Area 10 and the 10/A10, 10/9 balks a deep and wide depression in
surface 10042 marked it as a unique architectural feature. The depression or
basin was located just inside entrance 9020 and west of grinding installation
A9015. The edge of this depression was ringed by pottery smashed in place:
a strainer bowl, lamp, large store jar, platter, two small store jars, spouted
bowl, two flaring bowls, a carinated bowl and two or three cooking pots on
the east. On the west and south were a jug, pitcher and another large
	storage jar.

	This depression, which measures approximately 2.0 m. (E-W) by 1.75 m. (N-S)
may have had to do with either liquid containment (evidence of partial
plastering) or with grain containment (several grain type storage jars and
a chaff-filled bin in Area A10). The suggestion that this may be an
installation for the levigation of clay lacks support from the presence
of levigated or partially levigated clay or from pottery manufacturing
equipment (wheel, kiln, etc.). However a small pile of un-levigated,
reddish-brown clay was found south of the basin against wall 9006.
[Experiments by a potter demonstrated that the clay was of a quality that
it could be thrown into pottery shape.]

Other installations were also set in or on this surface 10042. A
stack or pile of three stones (one a grinding quern) 10054 between 1.55 m.
and 2.18 m. from the North balk and between 1.59 m. and 2.21 m. from
the East balk served as a stand for supporting full store jars. A large
mortar 10058 (perhaps a reused portion of a broken one) was set into the
surface and a localized white plaster area set in front of it; a small,
round grinder was located next to the plaster. The installation was between
32 cm. and 81 cm. from the North balk and between 57 cm. and 88 cm. from
the West balk. Portion of another large, broken mortar was also found in
the northwest corner of the Area.

A saddle quern, 45 cm. X 15 cm., was also found on the surface turned on its
side; several other stone grinding or polishing tools were also located on
10042 in Area 10. In Area A10 and A10/A9 balk more pottery, a bin containing
burned and decayed chaff and a small pit lined with used querns A10025 was
	uncovered.

This surface runs to bench 10047 from the north, to the low retaining wall
10050, to installation 10058 and (in Area A10) to wall A10018, to lined pit
	A10025, and to bin A10028.

100042.P	Str. XA

Pottery and objects on surface 10042. For dimensions and location see
	10042 above.

There were numerous restorable vessels on this surface--several large
storage jars, several footed bowls, a carinated bowl, at least two juglets,
a combed jug, a pitcher, several cooking pots, a platter. In Area A10/A9
balk were found also a spouted bowl/cooking pot, part of another carinated
bowl. Several jar handles had been incised with potter's marks.

In addition two saddle querns, several grinding/polishing stone
tools, a tiny stone weight with a flattened facet, a dibble weight??
and a palette were found on the surface.

There was also a pile of red-brown clay (not destruction debris)
which, when partially levigated, was suitable for throwing pottery.
This was located between c. 2.0 m. and 2.5 m. from the South balk and
between 4.5 m. and 5.15 m. from the West balk along the bench 10047.

Threshhold between walls 9006 and 10027. Constructed of
cobble-sized fieldstones laid in a mortar of clay. Located
between 65 cm. and 1.95 m. from the South balk and between
	1.95 m. and 4.05 m. from the West balk at top level 484.05 m.
	(E), 484.12 m. (W), 484.16 m. (S) below 10045 to a founding
	level of 483.96 m. above 10047.

This threshold was set in against the western end of wall 9006,
the eastern end of wall 10027 and against the northern faces of
both. The threshold was used with surface 10042 which runs to its
northern face. Represents a modification of the entrance in the
resurfacing of the room with surf 10042; the threshold is set,
then, on the lower bench 10047.

A low bench of cobble and pebble sized stones along the northern
faces of walls 9006, 10027. The stones were set in a brown clay
mortar. The bench was raised slightly above the level of the floor
of the house. Located between 2.0 m. and 6.20 m. from the West balk
and between 52 cm. and 90 cm. from the South balk (at 2.0 m. from
the West balk), between 2.08 m. and 2.41 m. from the South balk
(at 6.0 m. from the West balk of Area 10). At top level 484.11 m.
	(W), 483.96 m. (in threshold area), 483.97 m. (E) below 10045 and
	10046 to a founding level 484.00 m. (W), 483.81 m. (c), 483.93 m. (c),

Retaining wall of small cobble-sized stones parallel to wall 10043
along the West balk. The line of stones, established well below the
level of surface 10042, was apparently set down (2-3 courses high)
in the construction stage of the house. This wall seen in section was
2-3 courses high with smaller cobbles set on larger ones as the bottom
course (41 cm. high); it was 2-3 rows wide but without a clearly
defined alignment of the stones (25 cm. to 38 cm. wide); the wall
was 3.02 m. long. Located between 82 cm. and 3.74 m. from the South
balk and between 1.2 m. and 1.53 m. from the West balk (at 1.0 m.
from the South balk) and between 25 cm. and 62 cm. from the West balk
(at 50 cm. from the North balk). At top level 483.97 m. (N), 483.92 m.
	(S) below 10042.1, 10048, 10045 to a foundation level of 483.50 m.
above 10068 destruction debris, pit 10076.

Surface 10042 ran over this wall, surface 10053 ran to its eastern
face, surface 10056 also runs to its eastern face. Probably functioned
as a small retaining wall to hold a bricklike foundation material in
place for the construction of wall 10043.

Early Bronze, with one piece of base ring ware-indicates
that the fill was gathered from an exposed Early Bronze
	locus somewhere on the tell.

For dimensions and location see surface 10077 above. At
top level 483.78 m. below surface 10077 to bottom level
	483.56 m. above surface 10081. Runs to walls 10074/10083
