DigMaster Typology Comparison Chart
The following iconographic index provides access to the full catalogue entry for a figurine. Selecting a tile from the icons on this screen will take you directly to the type page of a particular design. (Connect here to view the entire typological index.) The types are arranged in approximate descending order of their quantity in the Tell Halif collection. Primary focus is on the general visual subject; manufacturing technique and stylistic variations are used to distinguish subcatagories. Since none of the pieces is a whole figurine, many of the fragments have been recognized as belonging to a type only by comparison to other figures, from Tell Halif and other sites, references to which are being added to the individual entries. Several entries are temporary classifications for fragments (e.g., human head, pedestal) whose iconographic type has not yet been determined. The catagories "pillar figurine of woman," "kernos," and "zoomorphic figure" consist largely of Iron II pieces, while most of the collection is ascribed to the Persian Period, with some possible Hellenistic pieces. All the figures are of terracotta, except the last type of stone figures. The classification work is still in progress, and catalogue entries are being modified frequently. This iconographic typology, classification of the figurines, and an analytical essay are being prepared by Eleanor Ferris Beach, Associate Professor of Religion at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL.
